1 - Last seen in his son's truck near the "Anvil Lake Fire Tower" as per VC News Review 10/14/2025 (Yes, 2025)
2 - Location where 3x Bloodhound searches led to as per VC News Review
3/4 - ".45 miles north of Kentuck Lake Road" leaves some room for error - could they mean spot 3 just north of lower Kentuck Lake rd known as Tuttle Road - or do they mean the very far northernmost portion of Kentuck Lake Road where it ends (which would put the truck location closer to Cnty Hwy A)
It's nearly 5 miles from spot 1 to spot 4 and nearly 4 miles from spot 1 to spot 2 (as the crow flies - actual distances are greater with the curvy road)
This is all just dense national forest - would have been even worse fifty years ago. Location 1 is also the entrance to "Old Firetower Road" - this would have been there in the mid-seventies as the fire tower wasn't moved until later (albeit, probably named Fire Tower Road at the time)...
I believe that location 1 is the accurate last location he was seen in the truck. Assuming Imogen Lake Road was called Kentuck Lake Road at one point in time, that matches.

Today was my first time hearing about this case that is so close to home! I spend TONS of time out in these woods (Northern Lights, hiking, camping) and would have been more vigilant about my surroundings while out there had I known about it! I will see if anyone from the VC Sheriff's department is willing to share the exact location the truck was parked - and start doing some more hiking around the area!

This article confirms what the above poster says and gives more detail than previous articles

I could have sworn I just uploaded a map with references but that just disappeared from the forum!

No I see it! thank you. I will save it. Much appreciated. I try to do hunter maps for people each year to look in the areas people went missing. You input is priceless.

FWIW

There are a lot of factors I am trying to put together in this one...

I regularly drive Military Road. Literally the /exact/ route that the bloodhound dogs "tracked" Charles. There's a spectacular overlook on Vista Lake, walking trails all around the wildlife preserve, a single campsite on the river.. I've taken some spectacular photos of the Northern Lights out in that area and there is plenty of traffic in the form of ATVs and UTVs... However, in the 1970s, these were quite uncommon. Even twenty years ago - when my friends and I would drive those dirt roads doing things that our parents would probably question had they known we were doing them - those roads were not busy. Anyone you did see was either hunting (the forest roads around here were literally purpose built for hunting - see Deadman's Lake Road - Dad's Lake Road - Katie Lake Game Trail) or they were doing something they didn't want to get caught doing (like my friends and I).

Charles had a vacation home on Spectacle Lake. Spectacle Lake is visible on my previously posted map to the left of Kentuck Lake. While I know that dogs have tracked people before... I kind of doubt their abilities in this one. I feel that if Charles had willingly left his vehicle in an attempt to walk somewhere, he would NOT go north. He would go south. Anywhere SOUTH of his location would have been at least somewhat familiar to him (it's only a short distance from State Highway 70 and his own vacation home). Just verified on the Wisconsin State Historical Image website that Imogen Lake is/was known as Kentuck Lake Road and the Kentuck Lake Road you see on my map was/is Kentuck Rd. He would have regularly driven/been driven on Hwy 70, gone east (correction - north) on Military Road, and then taken a right at Imogen/Kentuck Lake Road in order to get to his own vacation home.

I have a strong suspicion that Charles - growing tired of waiting for his son to return or worrying about him and wanting to get home to notify someone - left his vehicle and traveled SOUTH on Military Road. From there, he would have gone a short distance to Highway 70, or he would have taken a left on Imogen/Kentuck Lake Road.

I don't quite know the murder rate for Vilas County - specifically, middle-of-nowhere Vilas County (it takes about twenty minutes to get from the City of Eagle River to Old Firetower Road) but I don't think he was robbed or taken and killed... I do think he wandered off as is common with dementia patients.

I will post two updated maps for you shortly with a more accurate location . I have a map from 1981 and a current map I can drop for you. I'm quite certain that the "north of Kentuck Lake Road" they are referring to is Imogen Lake Road on my map and my marker should be a little further north on Military.

Last edit: If Charles was trying to get to his vacation home and wasn't paying attention to or there wasn't a street sign - he could very well have taken a left onto Old Firetower Road (Firetower Road) and traveled up the hill to the fire tower. It's ends in a circular road that leads straight back down to Military Road. Once you get on Old Firetower Road, there is another small road that leads left into an open field that I assume was once used as a stump/yard trimming dumping area. The fire tower was built in 1933 and used until 1965. It was DISMANTLED IN 1975 - one would assume in the spring/summer before this incident. That would mean that there was no reason for anyone to go up the hill on Fire Tower Road.

Missing for over a week
Man vanishes in Nicolet National Forest, sheriff suspects foul play in disappearance
by Herman Baumann

The mysterious disappearances of an elderly man in the Nicolet National Forest has triggered one of the largest manhunts the area has ever known. County sheriff John Scott has not ruled out the possibility of "foul play."
Charles Theis, 83, of Milwaukee was with his son, Floyd, who was bird hunting. The younger Theis parked his car with his father in it, on Military Road near the Anvil Lake fire tower around 4 p.m., about 5 miles from their recreational home on Spectacle Lake in the Town of Phelps. He told his father to wait in the car, and went into the weeds hunting. The elder Theis was missing when his son returned about an hour later.
Scott used bloodhounds to track Theis' trail after his disappearance. The trail covered about nine miles along Military Road, and suddenly disappeared without a trace at the corner of Deerskin and Military Roads. The trail was checked by the hounds three times with the same result.
Scott has a theory that somebody picked Theis up at the intersection. He said that someone could have been looking for an easy person to rob, or done it as a bad prank.
"There's also the possibility that he was picked up by somebody who wanted to help, but was unable to," Scott said.
"Theis is an old man who has a very bad speech impediment, is hard to understand, and probably didn't know where he was or where he lived," he explained.
Scott added, "Of course, if someone like that did pick him up, I don't know why they haven't contacted us."

Man missing in forest here, no new leads

No new leads have been uncovered in the case of Charles Theis, who mysteriously disappeared in the Nicolet National Forest near trhe Anvil Lake fire tower, despite one of the largest searches in the history of the area involving four-wheel [dirve] vehicles, helicopters, airplanes, and over 200 volunteers.
Theis, [and] 83 year-old retired Milwaukee fireman, was with his son, Floyd Theis, who was bird hunting when the two were separated. The younger Theis told his father to wait in the car, which was about five miles from their recreational home on Spectacle Lake, while he went hunting. When he returned about an hour later he found no trace of his father.
The search was continued over the weekend by volunteers from the Milwaukee Fire Department and the Eagle River area, and hunters. No sign of Theis was found according to Vilas County Sheriff... *** article missing portion of text - assumed text reads: John Scott. Bloodhounds were brought in *** article resumes *** to follow the older Theis's trail shortly after he disappeared. The trail covered about nine miles along Military Road and suddenly vanished at the corner of Military and Deerskin Roads.
Scott theorizes that Theis was picked up by somebody in a car where the trail ends, possibly by someone wishing him harm...

Description circulated
Missing man search continued by son
by Pat Katisch

Although the sheriff's department has given up the search for Charles Theis, who mysteriously disappeared in the Nicolet National Forest near the Anvil Lake fire tower October 14, Theis's son Floyd has continued searching for his missing father and is circulating a picture and description of the 83-year-old retired Milwaukee fireman.
No new leads have been uncovered in the case, despite one of the largest searching in the history of the area involving four-wheel drive vehicles, helicopters, airplanes, bloodhounds, and over 200 volunteers. However, Floyd Theis is hoping that a friendly motorist may have picked up his father, who had been waiting in a parked car on Military Road while Floyd was bird hunting.
In addition to numerous local searchers, up to 30 members of the Milwaukee Fire Fighters have joined Floyd, who is himself a Milwaukee fireman, in a continued search for Charles Theis.
"We've covered the area about ten times over, inching-out a little bit more every day, and it seems now that he most logical explanation has to be that dad was probably picked up by someone," Theis said.
"He's quite friendly but tends to be a little incoherent and confused and it's possible someone could have even driven him back to Milwaukee."
"Dad is about 5' 7", weights 160 pounds, has snow *** article missing portion of text - assumed test reads: white hair. He wears *** article resumes *** glasses with an attached hearing aid and has no bottom plate. He was wearing an ID band on his right wrist which said "Milwaukee Fire Department" and his name "Charles Theis" and he was wearing a Masonic ring and a gold wedding band. He had on a brown corduroy jacket with wool lining, double knit brown pants, brown shoes, and a brown hat with thin yellow stripes."
Floyd realizes that as each day passes, the chances that his father is still alive become less probable.
"Dad had several heart attacks and a stroke in the past and he was used to taking two heart pills every day," he said. "Unfortunately, he didn't' have any of those pills on him when he disappeared."
Floyd has a cottage on Spectacle Lake, where his mother has been staying, waiting for news of her husband. Because Floyd's leave of absence from the Milwaukee Fire Department expires this week, he will have to return to Milwaukee.
However, he is hopeful that somewhere someone will recognize his missing father from the picture being circulated and will help bring about a reunion.
Offering a $1000 reward for information leading to the return of his father (dead or alive), Floyd has asked that anyone from this area who may have a lead should contact the Vilas County Sheriff's Department (715-479-4441)

Stopped by the Sheriffs office today hoping someone would be willing to share any information about this case. The receptionist seemed doubtful I will get any answers from anyone there - but took down my name and number. Will post that MJS article tonight. I have spoken with Leanne (Charles great granddaughter who previously posted on this thread) and will condense her overview for everyone as well providing she okays my doing so.

I know it could just be the way it was worded, but I thought it a bit odd that Shirley Theis referred to the anniversary of Charles' going missing as his death, then changed it to "or whatever happened". jmo

I don’t know where these missing persons websites are getting their info but after reading all the articles, speaking with the family, and chatting with a couple of other interested parties, I feel that any reference to “.45 miles north of Kentuck Lake Road” should be scrubbed from existence and either the proper coordinates be given or better directions given: “near the intersection of Military and Old Fire Tower Road”. How would one go about pressing for those changes?

I've had luck contacting the listed agencies in NamUs before. For Charles, it looks like both the
Oneida County Medical Examiner's Office (715) 369-6196 and Vilas County Sheriffs Office (715) 479-4441)
are listed as primary contact.

If you've been in contact with family, they might be able to tell you who the current detective is assigned to the case. Once you have that info, you could contact them with your findings to have some of these sites updated with accurate info.

Great work and keep us updated!
