WAUSAU - Police are asking community members for help finding a Crandon man who went missing in Wausau on Monday.

Gregory Papernik's belongings, identification and pet cat were found on park benches in Big Bull Falls Park by the Wisconsin River on Monday, according to a Facebook post from the Wausau Police Department. A person called at 5 p.m. Monday to report the belongings having been there with no one around them for several hours.

A bath towel hung over the railing of the river, and belongings left behind suggest that Papernik might have voluntarily gone into the water, but at this point, police have no witnesses to confirm that, the post said.

The Wausau Fire Department and the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources are assisting the police with water searches, the post said, but nothing has been found. The search is ongoing.

Then, Rothschild Police found him hitchhiking on the highway. An officer gave Papernik a ride to the Salvation Army in Wausau around 9:30 a.m.
Papernik was told to return to the Salvation Army for a 4 p.m. appointment but never showed, according to police.

Also, mentions he is legally blind.

According to a news release, the dive team located his body just after 1 p.m. Friday.

Investigators say there are no signs of foul play at this time. An autopsy is expected this weekend to verify the cause of death.
