KAUKAUNA, Wis. (WFRV) - Human skeletal remains were found in a burned out vehicle on railroad tracks in Kaukauna

The vehicle was on the tracks running along the south side of the Fox River near Holy Court.

The Kaukauna Fire Department says a neighbor noticed something burning at around 2:30 Saturday morning and called the department.

The fire department does not know how the car got on the tracks and says there is no evidence that the car was hit by a train. Officials say the track is no longer in use except maybe for parking train cars.
The remains have not been identified.

Assistant Police Chief Jamie Graff confirmed that the department has not identified the person inside the car, but is working with the coroner's office. Graff said it appears to be an adult because of the larger frame, but could not say whether it was a man or a woman.

At this time, the department is trying to figure out whether the incident was an accident, or an intentional or suspicious incident, Graff said.

KAUKAUNA, Wis. (AP) — Police in Wisconsin say an elderly woman whose charred remains were found in her car may have caused a fire when she became disoriented and drove over railroad tracks.

Kaukauna police say it could take weeks to confirm the identity of the woman officers found Saturday after reports of a fire.
WLUK-TV reports Tuesday that police said interviews with witnesses led investigators to believe the woman mistook the railroad tracks for the roadway. Investigators say it's possible the fire started after the car's tires were flattened and caused sparking between the wheels and tracks.

Sounds like they know who she is, just waiting for confirmation before they release her identity. Poor lady. What a sad way to die!

Yes, I would say this is unlikely to even involve a train. Looking at Google maps, the railroad track abruptly ends just to the northeast of where this apparently occurred. The only use of the track would be for serving the industry just to the southwest - and would involve very slow moving trains.

The only weird thing is, how the heck did she end up there? Where did she get on the line?

State street (to the southwest) seems most likely, but it would have meant driving through the industry and switches in the track. I would be surprised if a car could make it all the way through.
