GUILTY WI - Kayden Powell, 4 days, Beloit, 6 Feb 2014

I agree with Joe Friday - KS was given a heads up and time to drop Kayden.
Does anyone know how long it takes to pin the pings from a cell phone so you can trace them? Maybe it is a while AFTER you have a location on them, so LE had to get the area she was in first before they could do anything. IIRC, she told them somewhere in Iowa the first time she spoke to LE at BM grandmothers house. Not much to go on, and how did they know IF she would follow their instructions or even answer later phone calls?

At that point, I believe KS was of prime interest to LE. A newborn is missing from the house she left a few hours earlier, a sister who appeared from no where, freezing weather, and a three hour head start!! We can all sit back and think of other ways to do it - now that it is over, the truth is - we do not know all that was going on, the capabilities of the magnificent technology, or how the perp thinks!

BRAVO to the endless hours and energy that so many dedicated people put into finding this beautiful baby Kayden! They each deserve PRAISE, not comments on how we laymen would have done their job, IMO. :loveyou:

I am wondering if the wedding posted on her FB is a renewal of vows or something because they talk about being married long before May of 2013.

Your kidding me.....right?

I guess THANK YOU so much Kristin Smith for putting Kayden in a plastic tote and not a duffle bad so that LE could "luck out".

There will always be someone who bashes LE for not doing a good enough job when in fact LE did a much better job this time then I've seen in a long time when it came to a missing baby. I guess they better talk to all them cops and tell them that they only lucked out...next time they can do better. I guess we better review what they could do better next time instead of realizing they DID something that WORKED for once. Please. Give me a freaking break.....

We learn from our mistakes. If no one critics procedures than more mistakes will be made.

Yes LE could have defiantly done things differently. Did the case turn out with a happy ending? Yes, thank God. Because I think he had a lot to do with how it did.

But you don't tell a potential kidnapper to pull over in a car so LE can make contact with them to ensure the person who was kidnapped is not in the vehicle.

Do you honestly believe the kidnapper is not going to try and get rid of what evidence will incriminate them?

I think it was best to stop her so soon. Her being willing to stop is even better. Because then you can narrow down the search area and make the search area smaller.

Do you honestly believe that it would have been best to give the kidnapper a chance to make it another 800 miles away? That search are would of been huge by the time they covered the whole area and finally found him he would have died.

Not sure why they didn't check behind the gas station right away. But that is just one police department not all of them.

I do question that part.

Sorry not trying to come off mean or any thing but I really do think that they deserve some credit for a while instead of right to criticizing them. I don't know about you but I do worse when others criticize me. I want to do better and feel better when I'm told that I'm doing a good job. They did a great job. They need to be told that and feel that so they strive to do it again.

What we are saying is they could have pulled her over instead of calling her.
Not let her get further just stopped her instead of calling her.
They could have pinged or GPS tracked her phone and done it that way.

I agree Joe.
I'm thrilled that LE found Kayden. But they should have found him 27 hours earlier.
Fact of the matter is, if he had not been put in something so weatherproof, he'd be dead.
People can be mad about "giving Kristen credit" all they want, but it's a fact.

When LE arrested Kristen, we immediately said they needed to search all over in that area.
I would like to know why they didn't do that. Because I'm not seeing a good reason for it. :twocents:
Just because it had a happy ending doesn't mean they did everything right.

Just because we see a few flaws with how they did things doesn't mean we don't appreciate LE.
They are not Gods... they are not above criticism and they need to take criticism to learn. :twocents:

I think they were just together for so long they considered themselves married.

This was not a "quickie I'm pregnant let's get married" wedding.
They were planning it for MANY months.

She BOUGHT her wedding dress in December of 2012 while she was in Texas.
They sent out invitations and talked about "the big day" for many months.

Her husband practically worshiped the ground she walked on.
He is 100% NOT FAKE. Her kids are not fake either.
I just do not understand why she did this. :please:

I know. I guess we all have different ways of looking at things.

I guess I just kept thinking yesterday what if they pulled her over with him in the car? That could of turned out even worse.
High speed chase with out him in a car seat. Or holding him hostage. She wasn't in her right mind.

OK tell me this. Should KS have been taken into custody on the warrant or let go?

He wasn't behind the same gas station. From the Washington Post article (http://www.washingtonpost.com/natio...df7c-9062-11e3-878e-d76656564a01_story.html):

Meanwhile, dozens of officers began searched for the child at possible stop-offs along Smith’s route from Wisconsin to Iowa. West Branch Police Chief Mike Horihan decided to check the area around a BP station about 500 yards from the station where Smith was arrested. He heard a baby’s cries and discovered Kayden in a closed storage crate alongside the building. The newborn was responsive and healthy, the chief said.

I'm sure they searched the gas station where she stopped, too.

An unmaked car should have followed KS to see if she would have went to retrieve Kayden.

What crime was it to have a prosthetic belly in her vehicle?

At this point in time KS was likely LE's prime suspect in the disappearance of Kayden and thought to have had Kayden in her possession. (Baby seat, clothing, ect)

I think the officer who made the original contact with KS at the K&G station or his superiors should have made the decision not to take KS into custody and should have called for an unmarked vehicle to watch KS after initial contact was made and KS was given permission to proceed on her way. KS would have likely returned to the BP station at some point in time to retrieve Kayden if she thought no one was watching her.

Following KS undetected might of possibly led LE right to Kayden within minutes.

KS could have been stopped further down the road on the warrant for further questioning and to be taken into custody, if nothing became of her returning to pick up Kayden where she hid him.

Not sure about that since she accused him of cheating on her on his FB in September. Not sure if it is ok to post a link, but google her FB name and you will find it.

His facebook which is covered in pictures of her?
He was complimenting her, bragging about her and posting pictures of her.
He was obviously very proud of his wife, kids and family.
I don't think we can put much credibility in claims that her husband cheated on her. :twocents:

This woman allegedly abducted a baby and left him out in the cold for 29 hours.
I think it's possible she had some insecurities and emotional issues. :twocents:
