Unanswered questions: Police say they need to keep lid on information

OREGON — A body may have been found, but dozens of questions remain.
Some could be answered today. Others may take longer.
As they've been throughout the weeks since UW-Whitewater student Kelly Nolan has been missing, police on Monday were stinting in what details they would release about the case.
"We are always, in missing persons investigations, very, very careful about what information we release," said Madison Police Chief Noble Wray. "There's speculation we could engage in here, but its really important, given the gravity of the situation, that we don't speculate and conclude on some things."

Nolan was reported missing June 23 after a night of partying in Downtown Madison. She lived in a sublet apartment on Mifflin Street but it's not known how she came to rest about a mile from Deer Park Buddhist Center, one of the most peaceful spots in the county.
"We have a lot of physical evidence," Wray said. "We have . . . an area that we need to make sure that we're collecting as much forensic evidence as possible."

Probably pretty big yards 3 /5 /9 /10 acre plots of land?
I have 10 acres & was looking out today thinking wow someone could throw someone in my back yard & I'd never know it.

Thanks for the tip. Now, please email your address.... jk!

If the employee isn't the perp and he actually did hand her off to someone else...how is he going to prove it? No one saw a man matching the description of his 'hand off man' in the bar and if no one saw them walk away...the employee has a problem.

His story sounds possible, but I have to agree with ya - he was the last one to see her alive and, IMO, at this point in time, he would be my #1 suspect.

Why are their two very similar threads on this?????????????????????

  • #365
I don't know why we have two threads but it's confusing on which to post on. They should combine them.

Ok Just found my way over here after posting on the other thread by myself pretty much. Thanks for the tip POCO.

I am starting to believe the story of the "hand-off." Here's my thought. When her friends went home, she still wanted to hang out. Maybe she was hoping to run into a specific guy that night. Called his cell that night a few times, maybe he called her back. Or it was a last minute "booty call." I say that the bars were closing and she called the guy and said I am walking home with a friend of mine, if you want to hook up. Suspect then finds her walking down the street towards her house, tells friend thanks for helping helping and the two walk off.

That's why the phone records are soooo important. They know exactly who she talked to last.

So which is which? I am confused!

ETA: Never mind, I figured this one is for information, but seems the same things (information and links) have been posted on each. Anyway just to merge them?

I know. I realize they both have different purposes but it's confusing to have two different threads.

This is how the moderators set this up and I believe it was because families of victims might read here. For them to have to wade through personal comments that might be hurtful or not helpful to try to find new information isn't easy.
So, a discussion forum was set up to discuss the cases.

It's easier for all of us to have all the new stories in this thread so people can get access to the news and not have to scroll through disagreements and hurt feelings like we have in this thread.

I am not trying to speak out of turn here, just trying to help.

Thanks

If everyone followed the rules, it probably wouldn't be so confusing. I am just as guilty of posting non-news and information in these threads, so I am not picking on anyone, just explaining it.

I'm guessing the cell phone records helped locate her cell phone which in turn helped locate her body, although it sounds like the owner of the property may have helped??

I wish there were some updates!

It would appear she had already run into that specific guy though...

"He says he didn't know Kelly very well..."
+
" He told me Kelly was out with friends downtown Madison that night and her friends left and Kelly stayed in the bar with him."
= 'first' date like scenario.

According every report I've seen, friends parted from Kelly @ 11:30pm at State Street Brats, which IMO would logically mean that this individual was with her there and subsequently the rest of the night, going to or meeting at the Lava Lounge afterwards, until he was walking her home at bar time...where, after all those hours together (probably drinking), the unknown person comes in, and he left her with him during the 4 block walk home.

"Wray defended the way his department has released information about the case. Police have not released the details of a cell phone conversation between Nolan and her sister around the time Nolan disappeared, for example, and they've asked the family not to discuss details of the investigation. Police also have not released any information about who Nolan may have been with the night she disappeared or descriptions of any possible suspects. Authorities said they learned a lesson from the 2004 disappearance of UW-Madison freshman Audrey Seiler, who faked her own abduction. In that case, media pressure determined how police released information, Hanson said, which included a sketch of a phony kidnapper."The media's deadlines are not our deadlines," he said. "We have to get information out as best as we can but it cannot dictate an investigation."

The lesson, it would appear, they've learned is to not be so quick to believe the missing person may be a victim of foul play until there is physical proof that they were...protecting themselves from embarrassment, but at what expense?

I also wonder if she may of called a friend who was married. Could she of been seeing a married man? If she was out with friends she could of called him & threatened to tell his wife?

Guess possibilities are endless til we hear more.

If the perp were a young student back then...20 years could be spent raising a family, creating a bonified career, and becoming an outstanding member of the community. He could be a civic leader, a professor, a wealthy land developer, a teacher, a preacher, or even a dog catcher. ;)

Maybe there wasn't a 20 year cooling off period. The perp could have moved during that time and continued elsewhere. (The last known killing in '84 was far north of the rest and out his comfort zone which I thought was quite different.)

Or he could have been in prison for those 20 yrs.

No worries, PfM, I see now. I never understood the difference between these two sections of the forum before. You explained it well. :)

Thanks,
