Well, we already know this girl liked to drink. She also got busted for it more than once...so we can assume she couldn't handle it very well either. Would she have been in any shape to go to an after party or was she pretty much out of it at that point?

Parking remotely was because he wouldn't want anyone to see her get into his car at all. If he were parked around others..someone would have seen them together and have already connected him.

I think Kelly was self-medicating b/c of her grief. Also, she was a Whitewater student, and they drive much more. Very few students at UW have cars, so they don't get DUI's because they stumble home instead of driving. Kelly's DUI's were in Dane (Madison or Waunakee) and Walworth (Whitewater).

I think based on Cafeguy's story that Kelly was pretty out of it. But maybe second guy said "Come in the car and we'll go to another party..."

If Cafeguy's story is true, then second guy has less reason to avoid being seen. I don't think anyone would have thought it unusual to be getting into a car at that time of night - parked remotely or not.

There are others with special permits, too.

I think she was to drunk to care where she went or who with. Just she never wanted to go home alone.
We know she couldn't handle drinking.....but thought she could.

I won't make ya eat crow, Cheko! It is the same way in our state. Small town America where the bars are filled on Sat. nite and the pews are filled on Sunday morning (and there just aren't THAT many people!). LOL

Thanks SS.......I hate crow!!!! LOL
Our bars are filled on the weekends with people from other states mostly Mn.

He he! I have had a lot of arguments with out-of-staters about this. I maintain that b/c it's part of WI culture, we also learn how to be social with alcohol. It's part of life, as it was in Germany. Other states don't have it ingrained, so college can be more of a shock for students from other states.

That said, students still drink too much and are invincible, so they don't understand the dangers. I know I didn't. I'm darn lucky I didn't end up disappeared in Paris or Florence, much less UW.

Yes students drink to much....I'm glad you were safe!!!

I forget I am still a out of stater at heart!!! LOL To funny.

Makes me worry about kids all the more these days. They have so much peer pressure, stress, and the obligation to achieve on their shoulders now. More than my age group ever did! I look back and think about our worries then...they just don't compare. Our biggest fear was being dateless on a Sat. nite...not if we were going to be murdered. It would have never entered our minds because it never happened. What on earth has happened to this country?

Just gotta tell you about the strangest wedding reception I ever attended. It shows how much small town life includes alcohol.

The bride and groom were married in an invitation ceremony at a church in Sisseton, SD. THEN, the entire town was invited to the reception. Cripes, there were hundreds of people there. Teens had alcohol. There was an officer, but I never saw him question anyone.

It just isn't Wisconsin schools either. A good example is Decorah, IA, home of Luther College. There's absolutely nothing to do in that town. The bar owners, of course, are important members of the community. I know for a fact that underage drinking happens at the local bars.

So, it just isn't college kids. It isn't WI or MN. It's the atmosphere set and allowed by the community. If citizens didn't want this to happen, it wouldn't.

It took some frats with alcohol poisoning deaths to shake up our campuses and the people around here somewhat to the harsh effects of allowing our 18yo+ college kids to openly drink. You are right...it hasn't changed with our students much, but it has changed the way the adults have dealt with the issue that has made some difference. 21+ has been the legal age for alcohol, but wasn't enforced in college communities. The crackdown on underage drinking began with simple enforcement at the bars, stores, and on campus. They no longer sell beer inside the stadiums during games, etc. It is still a huge problem, but I have noticed a trend with a growing number of the younger students who don't drink.

Trino~ What a wedding reception! Since it was private and the parents were there, I don't have a problem with it. Strange reaction, I know. I would rather see parents monitor their kids than them sneaking off to some remote area of the woods and driving. Kids are going to try alcohol and we aren't going to stop them. What we have to do is try to educate them on drinking responsibly. Someday, they are going to drink legally.

By the way, does anyone know where she went for an interview that morning? I don't recall seeing anything other than she was supposed to have had one.

Obviously, she was confirmed being near the swimming pier, at some point. Exactly where is that? I tried to find it on the map and couldn't narrow it down.

If you look at a UW Madison campus map- the Memorial Union Swimming Pier is right by the Pyle Center. Here's a map.

If the entire town was invited, I hardly think this is private, although I understand that it would be considered so. However, the law doesn't state kids can drink at private parties.

I would consider it a great personal favor if the posters on this thread would read and discuss the Diedre Harm murder in Wisconsin Rapids. We've got a close friend/second mom of Diedre on the thread, and she gives us info and passes ideas to LE.

As far as I know, Dierdre's case is pretty stagnant, and it's a travesty. A little teeny baby girl is growing up without her mother because of some monster.

Thanks, Mssheila! I notice there is a public parking garage near there, too. Interesting.

Do you know where this interview took place, Ms?

On the morning of Friday, June 22, Kelly went to a job interview in Madison.

Nor does the law state they can drink in their cars, by bon fires, at their frat houses, in bars, friend's houses, or other remote areas known to be places where they gather with no supervision. I think it is the lesser of two evils for them to have their parents present while attending a celebration such as a wedding, if they are going to drink at all. Law or no law. :twocents:

Thanks for the information, Whisky. It is going to be a very sad day in Waunakee for her family and friends. Bless their hearts.

They don't have the video up yet, but last night the trailer on The Lineup with K. Guilfoyle (Fox) said LE is trying to find the person quickly before he "does this again". It doesn't sound like this was some random college student to me who got into a fight with her. It would indicate a serial killer.

Someone on that show also stated LE had talked to Cafe guy...she called him "Andrew" and said previously that LE said he was "cleared" and still is. I haven't heard this before now...so I think she could be mistaken, but it is what she said. Also, that they are definitely looking for the second man. (Can't wait until they get the video up so I can listen to this all again as I was tired.)
