Princess Ilunga, 37, called the Rock Island Police Department on January 16 at about 6:07 a.m. to report that her car had been stolen while it was left running in front of her residence. She said her four-year-old child, Blessing Aoci, was inside the vehicle at the time. Officers and volunteers conducted an extensive, nine-hour search until Blessing was found outside her residence at 2:53 p.m.

Authorities began investigating Blessing’s whereabouts over the nine-hour period and determined that Ilunga had intentionally hidden Blessing inside the residence during the search. An arrest warrant was issued Jan. 30 for Ilunga for filing a false police report, a class 4 felony.

Abduction Hoax
Just absolutely insane.
Everyone was worried about her child!

Any family member who played along in it should be charged as well.

I was pretty shocked when I read this, totally insane
Jaw 'droppingly' so.

I wonder if the police got any information from the teenage knuckleheads who had stolen the car. They must've been a bit surprised when they learned that they had kidnapped a child.

According to this kwqc article from above, the police went back over an interview they had with the mother early on while some of the children were in the room with them. While she spoke in English to the cops, she spoke in Swahili to the kids. When the girl was found in such odd circumstances, they had an officer who is fluent in Swahili listen to the body cam recording. That revealed the hoax.

This is awful! Mom started out as a victim; her car, which many of us see as our means to a livelihood, was stolen. In her panic, she made some awful choices. I sincerely hope at the very least, she was watching from a distance when she left Blessing in the alley to make sure she was found right away. If not, the irony is she really could have become a missing child. Sensitively asking, when a missing child is found and they are young enough that their communication skills are questionable, would a full medical exam be done to make sure they weren't harmed? If so, how traumatic for a child only used to seeing their pediatrician at a familiar office.

I'll admit I feel a little bad for the teenage car thieves. At least they are only guilty of taking a vehicle and not kidnapping and abandoning a child. And maybe this answers the question of the three (?) carseats said to be missing from the vehicle -- they maybe weren't in the car to begin with, or the teens removed them to make room for themselves to occupy the seats.

"When police were allowed inside to question the family, McCloud said, Ilunga claimed that Blessing, who was in the room, was a different daughter named Baraka."
So police saw Blessing inside the house during the search? That's... Brazen, to say the least. The article goes onto say that Baraka is Blessing's Swahili name and not the name of a different child. I'm surprised police didn't question it at the time.

I did NOT see this one coming. I followed the amber alert thread and when news broke it was a hoax the AE thread had already been removed. I agree with the suggestion that this mother perpetrated this hoax because she wanted her car found and knew it would create a much greater urgency and response from LE by lying about a child being in the car. Ridiculous waste of resources while all of us out in the public were so worried and trying to show this mother some grace for having left her child in a running vehicle.

IIRC, Blessing was found in the alley by neighbors after the empty car turned up safely. One can only imagine that if the thieves had disappeared the car into a body of water, Blessing would still have to "reappear" sooner or later.

Not excusing any choices that were made, but it would be great if stolen vehicle alerts could be beamed out to the general vicinity, on TVs and cell phones. Maybe make it an opt-in thing so the alerts reach watchful eyes vs those who might start ignoring all alerts if they're too common. Sometimes a stolen car becomes a much more complicated case, with assault or worse involved during its theft, and finding the vehicle quickly could provide evidence of the entire situation.
