Dantzman was visiting from California for a family gathering. According to family members, he walked away from a hotel by himself but may have caught a ride from someone.

It's been nearly three months since an 89-year-old California man disappeared after walking away from the northern Wisconsin motel he was staying at during a family reunion.

[…]

Downey said footage from motel security cameras showed Dantzman walking away from the room, and in subsequent searches, dogs followed Dantzman's scent to a nearby highway. Authorities think Dantzman might have been picked up by a passing vehicle.

Downey, a business development manager for Raytheon Co., a defense contractor and industrial corporation, believes her grandfather could have succumbed to cold or other weather elements. Another possibility, she said, is that someone picked him up and took him away from the area.

[…]

"He's a chatty, funny, charismatic guy," Downey said. "And he was always such a sweetheart."

Dantzman is a widower and his dementia has grown worse since his wife died, Downey said. He talks often of getting married again and often approaches women and asks if they are single.

[…]

"We're continuing searches," Mrotek said, "some ground grid searches and dog searches. ... In the upcoming week of deer hunting, if there are any clues coming in from hunters, we'll be ready to act on those."

The sheriff's department has created a special task force to focus on the search, which includes a detective and deputies who are on duty around the clock.

[…]

"We've even reached out to the FBI," Mrotek said. "Our goal and mission is to find him. We do not want to overlook any resource out there."

Downey and other family members also have been making nonstop calls, writing emails and creating posts on social media in an effort to raise the profile of Dantzman's disappearance.

"It's almost like a second job," she said.

[…]

After growing up in northern Wisconsin, Dantzman joined the Merchant Marine and was based in Duluth, Minnesota, Downey said.

[…]

Then he joined the Marine Corps and served for a year in Korea. After leaving the service, Dantzman followed an older brother to Medford, Oregon, where he worked as a logger and a dance instructor, Downey said.

He later settled in Crescent City in northern California for better logging job opportunities. Dantzman eventually became a home builder.

Going the distance to find a missing veteran - WAOW
A silver alert is still out for Norbert Anthony "Tony" Dantzman who went missing on August 30th of 2019 in Winter, WI. Since then, his family has spent countless hours trying to find him.

[...]

They've sent 30,000 missing persons postcards to homes and businesses on major roads out of Whiting.

The family has spent about $15,000 on those postcards. But if money were no option, Kasey said, they would have sent them to every person in the state.

You can report a sighting, print fliers, and learn more here.

another case which makes me wish that GPS trackers for those with dementia were more commonly used... can be a difficult decision to make but would save families a lot of worry and heartache
(it sounds intrusive on paper but i realized that most of us carry around a tracker all the time anyways - our cellphones :p)

I really think it would be a blessing for most families that have a senior with dementia. I don't know how expensive they are, but I've seen too many seniors go missing, and they aren't always found.

Family of elderly man missing for nearly a year now believes he may have stopped in Prairie du Chien area

Nearly a year after a man went missing from northern Wisconsin, Tony Dantzman’s family said they got a tip that he may have visited an antique shop in the Prairie du Chien area during Labor Day weekend last year.

The family of the elderly Korean war veteran has been searching for him since he walked away from a motel in Winter, Wisconsin. Dantzman was visiting for a family reunion and might be trying to return home to California.

Investigators believe he may have tried to catch a ride with someone. Dantzman does have dementia so he might not know he is missing.
