Found Alive WI - Ryan Borgwardt, 45, Green Lake, 11 Aug 2024 *evidence that he faked his death and is alive in Eastern Europe*

I thought I'd misread that. That seems awfully low considering he's proven to be a flight risk.

But, it could be that low because his crime isn't that great. I think this has been sensationalized a little bit. He ran, he faked his own death (deception and fraud). But, the insurance money didn't get paid out, so ultimately, the crime is not going to be a huge deal IMHO. I think he deserves to live away from his family and with no resources. I wish his wife could keep all of the marital assets and money.

Yeah, I keep waiting for big charges to drop and to hear the story is bigger than a runaway dad....but maybe he's just a runaway dad.

I think LE also wants to show nationwide that faking own death and wasting search resources cannot go unpunished. There may be other people thinking of copying this. JMO

GREEN LAKE – Ryan Borgwardt isn't facing significant jail time after staging his death and reportedly fleeing to the European country of Georgia.

The "missing kayaker" is facing a possible nine-month prison sentence and a $10,000 fine after being charged with a Class A misdemeanor of obstructing an officer in Green Lake County Court Circuit on Dec. 11.

Judge Mark Slate released the 45-year-old Watertown man on a $500 bond and entered a not guilty plea on his behalf during the initial court appearance.

Borgwardt waived the reading of the criminal complaint before telling the court he only had $20 in his pocket and couldn't afford an attorney.

At some point in Europe, Borgwardt said he realized authorities discovered he was not deceased but added he wanted "to add as many layers as possible so he could not be found."

According to the criminal complaint, Borgwardt used a VPN to make it look like he was in Russia or somewhere else other than Georgia when he clicked on news articles relating to his story.

He said he knew Georgia would extradite him so “he wanted to be informed and prepared.”

“Ryan admitted that by his actions, he was intentionally misleading the investigation by the Green Lake County Sheriff’s Office,” Detective Jeremiah Hanson said Tuesday in a sworn affidavit.

Very true but why not just leave VS fake your own death. Did he really think he would not get caught…..crazy.
Getting off scot-free from alimony, child support if young children, mortgage, etc. I suppose a recent insurance policy for $375,000 would help a little. But the grief and devastation of losing the person you love is just horrible. A bucket load of jail time and restitution sounds good to me.

Omg he only had 20 dollars in him!! they ''fleeced'' him in Georgia and if he had stayed there, he would have ended up going hungry :-( poor fool. Jmoo.

Edited: to change the name of the country! I just read he was in Georgia (I adore Batumi, but come on!! who in their right mind goes there looking for love? the place is known for express kidnappings for ''powerful'' passports and money...he is lucky nothing too bad happened to him and he came back to the US in one piece, arms and legs intact.)

Is this just my imagination, or this man has lost quite a bit of weight and hair since the missing person photo was released? I am actually sad seeing this picture. This is not the face of someone who has had a great time abroad :-(

I agree, he looks much thinner. he may have not found the paradise and love story he was imagining after the two hotel nights with the woman, and he was left with only 20$? Where did the money he transferred to foreign BA go ? Maybe the initial thoughts on a scam were not that far from reality ? Or he spent for housing and living amd did not have a job ? JMO
Note that U.S. citizens may enter, reside, work or study in Georgia without a visa for up to 365 days.

He says he only has $20? Clearly his fabulous new life in Georgia was not lucrative. Who saw that coming? LOL

I would be not at all surprised if he was scammed out of whatever he brought with him, and things with the woman either didn't work out or she was never real/actually interested to begin with. This guy is many things, but bright is not one of them.

been on a plane for 16 hours but I guess there is a place for pulling at heartstrings
also sounds like his family could care less and he is only has about $20, which is probably what this man is ultimately worth

Wonder how he paid for his flight home?

While his family was grieving his drowning, Prince Charming and his lady friend spent five days in a hotel together.

That is so many rings of indecent, I can't count them.

This right here is why my road to forgiveness if this was my father would be loooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooong. I wish those kids nothing but healing and lots of support.

It's bad enough to walk out on one's marriage...

But one's children? I hope, should she choose to go this route, she's granted full, sole custody forevermore.

Plenty of louses out there who walk away from their families. This one took out a life insurance policy with the intention to commit fraud so, yeah, no one is going to say "carry on, enjoy your new life in whereveristan". Least of which the insurance company.

JMO
You really think Uzbekisgirlfriend didn't take him for every dollar his sorry ass was worth and dumped him? That's why he only had $20. That's how those schemes work. Also, judges will give custody to you if you walk away. not full custody to mom. I've even seen abusers (physical, sexual) get visitation. They want the dad to be in your life. Walking away isn't enough to stop them.

oh they (we actually via taxes) paid to send him home guaranteed.
