Green Lake County Sheriff‘s Office said the family of 44-year-old Ryan Borgwardt reported him missing on August 12 after he failed to return home from a kayaking trip.

Authorities searched extensively for eight weeks, using drones, radar, and boats.

Searchers found an overturned kayak and life jacket they believed belonged to Borgwardt.

Deputies searched further and learned Borgwardt reported his passport lost or stolen and had obtained another passport issued May 22, 2024. Podoll said Borgwardt's original passport was easily located by his family.

Further evidence recovered included:
  • The replacement of the hard drive on the laptop
  • The clearing of browsers on the day of disappearance
  • Syncing the laptop with iCloud on August 11
  • Photos of passports
  • Inquiries about moving funds to foreign banks
  • Changed email addresses associated with financial accounts on the day of disappearance
  • Communication with a woman from Uzbekistan
  • A new $375,000 life insurance policy in January 2024
  • A purchased airline gift card

Sheriff Podoll addressed how difficult it’s been for the family.

"I cannot imagine what she's going through, and they're going through; it's really hard, because one, they felt that the dad was drowned a day ago. They found out that he wasn’t,” said Sheriff Podoll.

At least he simply left, and didn't kill all of them first.

Very true but why not just leave VS fake your own death. Did he really think he would not get caught…..crazy.

Was he in trouble with the law in the US? Any active cases or warrants or criminal record?

Seems he just wanted a new life but I haven’t checked any records.

I know we’re here at WS, so we see the worst of it, but objectively: that’s setting the bar painfully low. This family (especially his kids) are going to be scarred for life at this man’s actions, between the grief, abandonment, and dishonesty. How does a kid grow up and have a secure relationship when one of their main role models took off one day and faked their death?

I can’t imagine what they’re going through now.

What a coward.

Was it simply to escape having to pay alimony/child support? Because you can simply... divorce and move out

Thankfully they appear to be high school age, so I feel like they're old enough to understand this isn't about them or anything they've done

Are there reports of him missing back in Aug? I feel so bad for his family.

Hopefully the woman in Uzbekistan is real rather than a honeytrap...

With what he is doing to his family, I hope it is a trap. IMO

Maybe he is in trouble with a loan shark or mafia type situation. More likely he committed some crime and fled before he gets caught.

Investigators said a search of Borgwardt's laptop showed the 44-year-old father moved money into foreign banks, bought an airline gift card, took out a life insurance policy and had been communicating with a woman from Uzbekistan.

"Ryan, if you're watching this, I'm pleading that you contact us or contact your family. We understand that things can happen, but there's a family that wants their daddy back," Podoll said in front of the press Friday.

The Sheriff's Office said its new goals for the case include:
  • Identify any and all crimes committed, any individuals who assisted with those crimes, and completely and thoroughly investigate all aspects of this case with the assistance of our state, federal, and international partners
  • Pursue restitution for the expenses of the search that have been funded by the taxpayers.
  • Alert Borgwardt that his plan is being uncovered, and that the best thing he can do is return home to his family and children

I am just blown away he thought he could get away with it. Even more blown away he was willing to put his family / children through hell.
