Investigators said a search of Borgwardt's laptop showed the 44-year-old father moved money into foreign banks, bought an airline gift card, took out a life insurance policy and had been communicating with a woman from Uzbekistan.

"Ryan, if you're watching this, I'm pleading that you contact us or contact your family. We understand that things can happen, but there's a family that wants their daddy back," Podoll said in front of the press Friday.

Wonder who the beneficiary of the life insurance policy is?

My thoughts are he took out life insurance to leave his family. They could have declared him dead, after so many years (even without a body) and collected the money. He also moved funds out of the country the way it sounds, so he took family money.
Although who knows maybe someone was in on this with him and the life insurance was left to the accomplice. Will be interesting to see how it all plays out but so devastating for the family. I’m sure they are happy he’s alive but !!!!

My gut feeling is he was getting catfished, and took out the life insurance not for his family here, (it can take 7 years or more to get declared legally dead in some states) but because his new female friend asked him to. Even at 7 years the party requesting the classification of death has to show there is NO evidence you are alive. A middle aged male unfortunately is the perfect target age for this type of scammer.

I don't see anything indicative of being a criminal mastermind, involved with organized crime etc. He has a minor drug possession that's 20+ years old that was dismissed, a concealed carry violation tied into the drug charge for which he was found guilty and a small claims court from 2016 for money owed a medical care provider.https://wcca.wicourts.gov/caseSearchResults.html

I really feel for his family, they did NOT deserve the hell he's put them through and the mess he's left them with.

So how would the cat fishing and life insurance work? Surely his family would have found out about the life insurance.

Could be simplly a way of getting personal info such as social security for identify theft, or perhaps getting the scammer named as the beneficiary in the event of the person's "death". Who the beneficiary of the new insurance policy will be the key here. If he's so cold hearted as to fake his death I just don't see him caring enough to spend the money for a new policy for the wife/kids. But he might well have.

Well depending who’s doing the catfishing, his death may not end up being fake next time. Foolishness!

I know we’re here at WS, so we see the worst of it, but objectively: that’s setting the bar painfully low. This family (especially his kids) are going to be scarred for life at this man’s actions, between the grief, abandonment, and dishonesty. How does a kid grow up and have a secure relationship when one of their main role models took off one day and faked their death?

I can’t imagine what they’re going through now.
I doubt they are scarred for life. For all we know, his family was relieved. Who knows what was going on in his life and their life? If he was living a fulfilling life in the bosom of his family, I doubt he would run away like this, IMO. Has he committed a crime? I didn't see any charges mentioned in the news articles.

Where is the link to Eastern Europe coming from exactly? I've only seen Uzbekistan mentioned, and that's not Eastern Europe, Uzbekistan is in Asia...

Maybe that's where the banks are located that he transferred funds to? MOO

A digital forensic analysis of a Borgwardt’s laptop provided a digital trail showing that he had planned his disappearance to Europe and attempted to conceal his efforts and mislead law enforcement’s investigation by faking the drowning.

Also on the laptop was Inquiries about moving funds to foreign banks, changed email addresses associated with financial accounts on the day of his disappearance, and Communication with a woman from Uzbekistan… a country in the middle east located just north of Afghanistan.

so they know he got a new passport so can't they track that to see what country he flew to? although I guess he's probably canoodalling with the woman in Uzbekistan
Knew there had to be a woman involved!

Look at that beautiful family. I guess he was trying to diminish his guilt by leaving a life insurance policy? How does a kid even process the fact their dad thought so little of them, he’d fake his death to start over in another country.

Hopefully the woman in Uzbekistan is real rather than a honeytrap...

what's a honeytrap? is that like catfishing?

all those resources that were wasted on him
all those searchers in possible danger because of his stupidity
not only should he be fined for the amount wasted on him, he should also be charged criminally

That's assuming he wasn't catfished.
