A crash course about this religion.

I bet this was done by some maniac who doesn't like that this temple is in 'his' town, Oak Creek, which is just south of Milwaukee, WI.

Adding ~ This isn't what I believe, I'm pointing out what I'm guessing might have been the mentality of the shooter.

The Southern Poverty Law Center lists eight active hate groups in Wisconsin:
• American Third Postion (White Nationalist)
• Aryan Nations 88 (Neo-Nazi)
• Creativity Movement (Neo-Nazi)
• Crusaders for Yahweh (Christian Identity)
• Nation of Islam (Black Separatist)
• National Socialist Movement (Neo-Nazi)
• New Order (Neo-Nazi)
• Supreme White Alliance (Racist Skinhead)
Yet unknown, of course, what was on this gunman's mind.

Hindu and Sikh people live together over in India and get along - not exactly the same religion per Mr. Surinder Singh. They are not Muslim.
They are commonly mistaken for being Muslim - victims of mistaken identity. CNN interview with SS.

They are peaceful people and commonly pray together for the entire world and for all of mankind. This crime is against mankind.

Rep. Joe Crowley (NY-7) led 92 Members of the House in a letter to the Department of Justice (DOJ) urging the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) to begin collecting data on hate crimes committed against Sikh-Americans, a community that is acutely susceptible to violence because of their appearance.

Here is the actual letter:

As of now, police squads are at the perimeter but are starting to leave. Classes at the temple have been cancelled. (I've been out of the room making dinner, but I guess that means all the folks inside are out now?) ETA -- news says, yes, confirmed all people are out of the temple.

New conference scheduled in 15 minutes.

(All this from tv station WITI)

My husband spent most Christmases and summers in Hales Corners at his grandparent's house.

If anyone has any questions, feel free to ask. Oak creek is a very safe city. I can't believe anything like this could happen here.

At this point we can't assume that this person was from this town or even this country, so it doesn't seem right to imply anything negative about the city or its people. What we do KNOW is that the police officer was local and that he was very likely NOT of the Sikh religion but risked his life to stop the shooting. That should be a credit to LE and to the community.

I live in Southern California. We have a large Sikh community here, and I have not seen any prejudice or discrimination pointed their way. maybe there is and I did not see it. But the Sikh kids in our schools have been welcomed and had lots of friends.

Did you notice any anger or prejudice towards them from the town?

I don't want this to be a hate crime.....It's horrible no matter what the circumstances but...

http://www.todaystmj4.com/news/local/165069616.html

"Every Sunday we have a Sunday mass, you know?" said Singh. "We come here to pray. This was an unexpected to happen. There was nobody armed. We come here for pray, you know? Don't have getting guns and there was nobody to defend them."

Singh also says he he feels helpless and angry over the incident.

"I don't know why these people do this, you know?" Singh said, distraught. "These are peaceful people. They just come here. This is the kind of hate crime that should be stopped and should be done something about."

I only mentioned the shooter's potential motive/not the feelings of the vast population. I hope people didn't take my post that way - other than you. Geesh.

There's no info so far about the weapon or weapons used, except that the victims were "shot."

Same here,Katy. I have never seen any prejudice or discrimination toward the sikh community. My husband knows several members. Praying none of them are among the victims.

I don't want the Sikh community to have to fear that this is anything more than a isolated incident.
