Wildfires in Fort McMurray Alberta

A gas station exploded, hotel burned down, restaurants burning, entire neighbourhoods turning to ash. RCMP are delivering gas to people whose cars have run out of gas on the highway. Residents are evacuated to oil sands camps, but the nearest one has already his full capacity.

It will be a miracle if everyone gets out alive.

They've declared a provincial state of emergency, and fuel tankers are enroute to deliver gas to those stranded.

The Canadian military has deployed helicopters and transport planes in response to the raging wildfire that has incinerated parts of Fort McMurray, Alta. — with more support to come as needed.

Four CH-146 Griffon helicopters are en route to perform evacuations in surrounding communities under threat from the raging blaze. Another two choppers are on standby at 408 Squadron in Edmonton.

Additionally, a C-130J Hercules has been moved to the nearby military airfield in Cold Lake, while a second Hercules and a C-17 Globemaster heavy-lift transport on standby at the country’s largest military airbase in Trenton, Ont., to aid in the movement of firefighters and equipment.

Anyone in the affected areas, please be safe (& check-in when and if you can).

My family and I lived through a wildfire almost four years ago now and while I won't say I know what you're experiencing or going through, I understand. You will be in my prayers this evening.

More evacuation orders issued for Fort McMurray
Last Updated: May 05, 2016 5:13 AM MT

Many evacuees forced from their Fort McMurray homes by wildfire Tuesday are on the move once again.

Three communities south of Fort McMurray, one including an evacuation centre, were ordered to leave as changing weather patterns turned the wildfire their way late Wednesday evening.

RCMP went door to door in Anzac, Gregoire Lake Estates and Fort McMurray First Nation after a mandatory evacuation order was issued.

There's now a boil water advisory for the area and camps because of smoke contamination.

Fort McMurray wildfire burning so hot, only weather can stop it

All that was needed was a spark, and whether it was caused by human error or lightning (an investigation is underway), once the spark was there, the fire became a beast.

"You hate to use the cliché, but it really was kind of a perfect storm," says Mike Wotton, a research scientist with the Canadian Forest Service and professor at the University of Toronto.
There was a mild winter and not a lot of meltwater from the mountain snow pack.
Now, a stale air mass has been sitting over Alberta, and it led to very low humidity.
Then there was an early, hot spring, and everything got very dry.
Then on top of that, it got windy."

2 die in fiery crash on Highway 881 south of Fort McMurray
A section of a major highway out of Fort McMurray is shut down after a crash between an SUV and a tractor trailer killed two people.

Lac La Biche RCMP say the collision happened on Highway 881 at Range Road 94 near the Heart Lake First Nation.

The driver and passenger of the SUV were declared dead at the scene. RCMP could not be reached to confirm what time the collision happened.

My heart is breaking this morning for all of those involved. I'm not sure what, if anything, I can do to help from so far away but will be looking into it when I have more time this afternoon.

B.C. wildfire expected to cross into Alberta today
Last Updated: May 05, 2016 11:41 AM PT

Fire officials expect the rapidly growing Siphon Creek fire will burn into Alberta today.
B.C. firefighters have agreed to continue battling the fire on the Alberta side as well, so Alberta crews can concentrate on the Fort McMurray blaze. :sigh:
Several hundred homes in five rural areas and a First Nations community are under evacuation alerts.
But there are no immediate threats to homes or people.

The fire is now 85,000 hectares, or 850 sq km, which is larger than the city of Calgary.

It has grown five times its initial size since it broke out, prompting more than 88,000 evacuations.

The fire started on Sunday in Canada's oil sands region and many oil sands projects have cut production.

The emergency operations centre has moved 300 km south and the evacuation order has widened as the flames spread past Fort McMurray.

Forecast for Fort Mac for Sat through Mon is 'showers'. They're going to need more than showers to slow this monster down, not to mention that if they are thunder showers, there is the risk of lightening making things worse.

They need a permanent air tanker base in Fort McMurray. They have the airport.
They needed the air support Tuesday afternoon. :( They had one helicopter with a 500-gallon bucket. :sigh:
