Winter Storm Nemo: Nor'easter Looms

  • #241
Thanks! I will try to see if ds knows anything. I can't imagine they're on the roof (I hope). We have a 3 floor Victorian and there is no way anyone could make it to the roof with the snow and ice!

Yes, the car exhaust pipe is one of the few things I can actually locate in a vehicle. Just don't ask me where anything is under the hood, lol!

We do have carbon monoxide detectors everywhere (was a requirement when we recently did some renovating) so that makes me rest a little easier. Plus, I've lived here most of my life and no one has ever mentioned this issue before.

http://www.usatoday.com/story/weather/2013/02/09/northeast-new-england-blizzard-nemo/1904347/

...........A deadly blizzard of historic proportions pounded the Northeast, already bringing more than 3 feet of snow to some areas and cutting power to 650,000 homes and businesses.

More than 3 feet had fallen on central Connecticut by Saturday afternoon, and areas of southeastern Massachusetts, Rhode Island and New Hampshire notched 2 feet or more of snow — as the storm began to wane.

The storm is blamed for at least seven deaths, three in Canada and four in the USA. A 74-year-old man died after being struck by a car in Poughkeepsie, N.Y.; the driver said she lost control in the snowy conditions, police said. A second New Yorker, 23, died when a tractor he was using to plow his driveway went off the edge of the road. A woman in her 80s was struck and killed by a hit-run driver Friday night in Connecticut, and in Boston an 11-year-old boy died when he was overcome by carbon monoxide in a running car while his father dug it out of a snow bank.

Hurricane-force winds and history-making snowfalls combined to spread misery from New Jersey to Maine. Winds gusted to 76 mph at Boston's Logan airport and 84 mph in Cuttyhunk, Mass. The storm piled the most snow on Hamden, Conn. -- 40 inches -- and was the fifth largest in Boston history, with 24.9 inches of snow recorded there......more at link......

Sorry I'm such a "girl". But dh is away and I have no idea. Where are the outside vents of heating systems?

The furnace will either vent through an existing chimney, a dedicated stack pipe going through your roof, or in the case of more modern fuel efficient furnaces, may vent through a special PVC pipe out through the wall of your home, usually close to the A/C unit in most cases.

Also don't forget to clear the fresh air intake of your auto, in most cases located under the windshield, it will be that area that looks like a floor register in your home just below the wiper blades. That grid is not just there for looks. :blushing:

My best friend is in Milford CT, she was supposed to fly back a few days ago, but chose to stay and wait out the storm with her sister, a diabetic who doesn't believe in emergency prep. I have heard that they got pounded and I haven't been able to contact her all day. i figure they lost power and she probably killed her cell phone batter in two hours flat, LOL. If anyone hears of any deaths or injuries in Milford, can you please let me know? I am very, very worried about her.

Here are news reports from Milford. It will take days before the roads are clear. Hope your friend is OK.

Weather Channel just mentioned a hidden danger we tend to forget in a big snow storm....carbon monoxide. This goes beyond the normal don't use charcoal inside your house for cooking warning.

Remember to make sure your car's exhaust pipe is cleared of snow when warming up your car.

Remember to clear all snow from the outside vents of your home's heating system.

Granted it make take some of you a while to locate your car buried in the snow drifts.

Article about the 11yr old who died from the car exhaust pipe being blocked. Dadhad to be taken to the hospital too :(
"When the boy was overcome by the fumes, the father went into respiratory arrest and emergency workers took both to Boston Medical Center, officials said. The boy was pronounced dead at the hospital."

Plows can't get down the roads because there is just to much snow. Daughter told me pay loader just went down her road to make a pass through the road. One report on the news said our state would take 10 days to get ALL roads clear. Another report says they may get plows through our town tonight. I sure hope so. Hubby is going out to continue with driveway later.

So sad. I wished the all news channels had talked more about the dangers of carbon monoxide poisoning before the storm.

They plowed our road about an hour ago. Only one pass down the middle. Someone in a caddy tried to drive, and got stuck right out front of our house. He was trying for 20+ minutes to keep going forward. He finally gave up and drove back the way he came...in reverse lol. DH and DS are back out shoveling. It's gonna take them all day to get us somewhat cleared...a walkway to the driveway, and then the driveway...

DS - He is 5'5"....

We are dug out! Yah! Thank God for the snowblower.

Everyone OK?

The snow is so high that my street side, on a post mailbox was covered... mind you, the town plow trucks helped with some of it.

Did I hear.....another storm expected in the North East tomorrow????? And in the Mid-West today????

Dear God, I feel so bad for this father and his son. The thing is, checking for a covered tail pipe/muffler, should be standard procedure. I see more and more things happening that could have been avoided with a bit of forethought or education. Doesn't anyone know anything about safety these days?

I'm am really upset that this should have ever happened. I know Dad did what he thought best for his son, and I'm so sorry, but c'mon, educate yourselves.

That's awesome, hubby and I (both nerds, but definitely not MIT material!) admire the heck out of the MIT kids. You must be wicked proud, as we say here. :)

Hope he and all the young folks in town come through without too much trouble!

Gov has issued a driving ban this afternoon, first since '78.

Thanks Gardenlady... we are mighty proud!!! Spoke to him yesterday and he said he was going to a campus wide snowball fight... found it on youtube...

Well, once again EVERY school district around us has closed for tomorrow, except our town. On our road, only one car can go at a time - how do they think we are supposed to get around? I guess we were lucky to get that one plow pass, my neighbor just told me that the next street over didn't get plowed at all...A pic of our road...

Our district is closed for tomorrow.
So, my daughters boyfriend brought a dodge ram truck home with a plow. He did not think he would make it to us, so my husband was going to walk to where he was, which was not to far. Next thing I know hubby and boyfriend are in the truck plowing our road to our house. I feel less trapped at least. No city plows have come by yet. There are now at least a 1/2 dozen homes that can get out of the neighborhood if their driveways are done.

Great job, Good Samaritans! I'm sure your neighbors are very appreciative...and everyone is safer now as well.
