This seems kinda ridiculous to me!

Here's The Story.

The cost of the actions that they've taken against this poor woman far exceed the whopin' .96 the city says she owes.

Mansfield's income tax rules

Each city resident age 18 or older must file a city income tax return by April 15 for the prior year's earnings.
Has anyone ever heard of the mandatory filing rule ... even if you didn't work or earn any income at all????????????????????????????????????????????????

That applies regardless of the amount of income -- or even if you didn't work at all.

Retirees who have no taxable income may register at the city finance office to be considered exempt from filing future tax returns. (Retirees must update their status if they start receiving an income again).

The city generates an annual list of apparent non-filers. They are sent letters warning them to file returns or face prosecution in municipal court. The list often includes people who regularly filed in past years but stopped; and people who didn't file a return, but whose names show up as employees at local businesses.

Ridiculous isn't it! The Tax Gestapo of Mansfield.
I'm NOT ever moving there. (Well, not that I plan on moving anyway.)

Methinks I shall be emailing some city officials this week.

Are they exempt if they die? Sounds like the city may have a problem with that.

Sounds like they must have a very low crime rate in Mansfield, if they have time to arrest someone for a tax bill.
