New Jersey’s commuter rail train suspended service to and from its World Trade Center hub in lower Manhattan Sunday afternoon due to an unattended package on a track at the station, authorities said.

The package was discovered at about 3 p.m. on track 2 at the PATH station, said Joe Pentangelo, a spokesman for the Port Authority Police.

Yikes! I've never been to NY but I would imagine they're always vigilant around there and especially since it's so close to 4th of July.

Positive hit for explosives?

That's a possibility I don't know how likely it is for the dogs to provide a false hit.

That would be my guess. I was hoping the dog was just mistaken but if more dogs got a positive hit, probably not.

PATH train service into the World Trade Center station is suspended while police investigate an "unattended suitcase," authorities said.

"Police were called to investigate a suspicious item when a K9 pooch reacted in a way that could signal explosive compounds, sources said.

PATH told riders through Twitter at 3:19 p.m.: “Due to police activity, service in to and out of WTC is suspended. Please use MTA for service uptown for PATH service in to New Jersey.”

According to this it happens.

Bomb-sniffing dogs at LAX a reliable tool but not perfect

“The overwhelming number of incorrect alerts identified across conditions confirms that handler beliefs affect performance,” the researchers, led by Lisa Lit, wrote in a journal called “Animal Cognition.”

Steven Nicely, who said he trained 750 police dogs and now runs K9 Consultants of America in Texas, said humans sometimes don’t even know what is occurring.

“The handler knows something is up and the dog reacts to the handler’s body language,” Nicely said. “The sad part is that the handler’s body language can be so subtle that unless you really know what you are looking for, people probably aren’t going to see it.”

A package ON the actual track? That's a huge deal.
The NYPD is always on high alert, especially around holidays. There is police presence in every train station if you can imagine that.
