Seenotrettung für Folterer?: „Wir können nicht scannen, wer die Leute sind. Die kommen ohne Pässe“ - WELT
Three men accused of torture in Libyan refugee camps would have arrived in Italy with the German rescue ship "Sea-Watch 3" of Captain Carola Rackete. "We can't rule this out, but we don't have any reliable information about it ourselves," according to Sea-Watch spokesman Ruben Neugebauer to the German Press Agency (dpa).
Migrants who arrived later with the Italian rescue ship "Alex" would have recognized their tormentors in Italy. First, the right-wing newspaper "Il Giornale" made the accusations. The police then announced in mid-September that the suspects had raped, tortured or even killed migrants in the North African country. "The migrants were systematically harassed and subjected to atrocities - through repeated and constant physical violence," according to the statement.
Brutal blows with sticks, rifle shots and electric shocks were among them. The suspects were arrested in a reception camp in Messina after other migrants sounded the alarm. According to police, they arrived in Lampedusa on 29 June, the day the "Sea-Watch 3" entered the port without permission.
Civil war and chaos have ruled Libya for years. Migrants are trying to get to Europe via the country. For many, this journey ends in an internment camp.
Aid organisations point out that they cannot know exactly who the people on their ships are. "We cannot scan who the people are. They come without passports," said Neugebauer.
Torture is one of the main reasons why people flee Libya. Therefore it is quite possible that perpetrators are also on the ships. "It is therefore very important that this is investigated. At the public prosecutor's office in Sicily at first nobody was reachable.
Italy's right-wing former interior minister Matteo Salvini immediately denounced the scandal on Facebook and demanded an apology from Rackete: "Not only has she broken the law and rammed a financial police boat: On 29 June Carola Rackete's 'Sea-Watch 3' is said to have unloaded three migrants in Italy who are accused of violence, rape ... and murder." Rackete is under investigation in Italy for aiding and abetting illegal immigration since she entered the port.
