GUILTY WV - Ericka Brown, 16, Kanawha County, 9 August 2014

  • #121
It doesn't reek of victim-blaming to me at all. It simply explains how they initially met. And to me it SCREAMS a warning sign for every teenager out there. I have no question if Ericka could speak to a high school gym full of teens right this very minute, she'd tell them "don't ever do this". She didn't deserve this, but she also didn't realize how many adult monsters there are out there eager to take advantage of naive teenage girls.

Yeah, they did do an excellent job making the details very clinical and even handed.

I do worry though, when we describe victims as naive that we may be doing women a disservice. It doesn't sound like Ericka was all that naive. Very often crimes against women have more to do with a difference in weight and strength than a difference in worldliness. We have to empower our girls to be able to gain the physical upper hand in more situations when they are in danger. Self-defence classes, personal safety devices such as pepper spray where they are legal and this is a big one to me, teach them to drive as soon as they can. And if possible get them/help them get a car. Many teenage girls are subjected to sexual violence and pressure because they are at the transportation mercy of their attacker. As a teenager, I was given a car and was usually the one to drive on dates because my father wanted me to be able to leave the guy on the side of the road if things got ugly, rather than the other way around. Just some thoughts.

25 bucks,,,

Something caused this victim's low self image way before this.
Maybe I am missing something - she looks like 12 not 16. Did he find out she was too 'old' and get mad? He's an evil minded demonic pedophile and nothing more. Regardless whatever misguided and troubled intentions she thought she had that pretty young lady deserved life and dignity.
There must have been some red flags - someone should have seen it.
Her horses, her dreams, her life... there was so much more to this child than this.

~ For the most part I would agree, but characterizing any child as naïve does no disservice to any adult, men or women. Children are, in fact naïve, lacking life experience, lacking decision making skills, informed choices. Adolescence gives young teens the 'feeling' that they know the world. Awareness of self as separate and unique gives them a degree of false security in their own ability. This victim knew some things - the internet, craigs, etc, but that in no way removes her naïve view, given the lack of life experience and rational thought with regard to her own abilities.

That's why we hold the adult accountable and not the child.

~ 'Teenage girls are subject to sexual violence and pressure because...' they are girls, plain and simple. Not because they don't have a car or because they need some money or anything else. As a man in this material, physical, sex based, selfishness oriented world, women of all ages are pressured by culture and media to put themselves at the mercy of beauty, popularity, self image, style, celebrity, etc. The more empowered we think women CAN be, the more victimized they become it seems.

I didn't want to go genderist so don't get me started on men and the 🤬🤬🤬🤬 culture. Violence against women is celebrated and acceptable, in culture, to both women and men.

Sadly.

Not long before all this happened (and apparently this "relationship" started in July at the latest), she had been at a behavioral/psychological hospital* for treatment of some kind. I researched the hospital and that's all they do there. It got positve comments, etc. Her parents must have seen something. We certainly will not know much more than that unless there is a trial and her medical record or a parent speaks up about it.

I'm sure we'll agree that the teen years -- if we're in a positive & supportive situation at home & at school, etc., can be some of the highest and lowest times we have ever experienced. Roller-coaster rides for years until we live a bit longer, get help if we need it (which it sounds like her folks were doing), and gain a bit more maturity, self-esteem, and that elusive wisdom that is so, so valuable for the rest of our lives. She just didn't get a chance to get there.

This is so damm sad for so many.

While I don't disagree for the most part, calling her (or any teen, for that matter) naive wasn't meant at all to be a disservice. I remember how I thought about things at 16, I remember how my friends thought about things at 16. You have one idea of the way the world is, or should be, and then 10, 20, 30 years later you look back and go "wow, I had so much to yet learn". It's just the way it is at such a young age.

Interesting timing as Roach's former g/f made some comments on her FB which suggest that late June/early July is when their relationship ended.

From the article he'd had sex with her at least once before so I don't think it was rage over finding out her age. And presumably someone did see some red flags or she wouldn't have been in a behavioural unit. I guess we'll find out, I have some thoughts in mind.

Sorry, this (my comments about naive being a disservice) probably should have been put in another thread. I saw the naive thing bandied around a lot in several other threads for slightly older women and my comments may have been better suited there. It wasn't directed at anyone in particular, just my general frustration with women being victimized.

I posted this earlier but it was right as it was coming out about who was arrested and confirmation (officially) that it was Ericka so I'm going to repost.

There has been A LOT of tragedy in her family apparently (per her dad) - https://www.facebook.com/groups/1457122311239000/permalink/1458019014482663/

Ericka's paternal grandma suffered until she died (no specification as to what her dad meant by that)

Ericka's maternal grandpa was murdered.

And Ericka's brother was burned over 94% of his body.

The latter two, especially, sure could be a heavy thing - for both her and her parents.

Knowing a friend who was burned to a similar extent (though not knowing the severity in the case of her brother) and it's been over a decade now, but she still has on-going medical procedures as a result, never mind the emotional trauma due to what happened, and of course the pain she deals with daily (and the comments and stares from others).

Not knowing the timing or specifics or anything of her brother's situation, it still seems like it probably could play into dynamics to some extent, and in the midst of what is often teen angst, any of the above all sure could add to things, IMO.

This is at least the second case quite recently where we've ended up with a second family member murdered (as in entirely different/unrelated situations) isn't it?

Hmmmmm, Wolf -- I don't FB, so somehow I missed this little tidbit. Interesting -- thanks for sharing. Grrrrr.

Makes him sound a bit selfish, huh?? Slug, low-life, esso-bee. I hope he never sees the sun again. Ever.

I think I speak for everyone on the planet, with a conscience, when I say we're all in agreement on that point.

My heart breaks for her parents. LE totally failed them. Really hope they find a good attorney.
His profile pic was uploaded Sunday 24th 9:45pm. I need to stay off of his profile.
Praying for his son who has to live with this for the rest of his life.

I have to admit, as soon as I saw that pic on his FB yesterday, part of me wondered if he may have been using his son's picture initially?

She has at least two kids (and possibly three), and one is a little girl (if it's really three, then the other is also a girl).

I'm hoping we don't find out she's another victim.

Also, sounds like the ex is not only with someone - as of early August, just after EB went missing is when it was posted on FB - it almost sounds like she's possibly actually back with someone from before.

Am I the only one who did a double take at the pic of him (doesn't deserve his name being used) from May on the couch?

I am having that very same thought, what if he killed her after being questioned? I looked at his FB page, and his new profile pics were posted on Wednesday also. He looks very red in them, as if he had perhaps been out on the river? Those thoughts just make me feel even angrier.

Taking into consideration the stretch of riverbank she was found on, it is nothing short of a miracle that she was found.

So true! That really is the best word for it - and the timing truly couldn't have been more remarkable - with her body being found by the jet ski folks at the same time he was being arrested!

And reading all the specifics now of those last days and him fleeing after the initial questioning and the poly being planned, etc. I really am anxious to hear what the ME has to say about the timing of her death.

Very interesting he "volunteered to take" a polygraph apparently and it wasn't phrased "agreed to take"

Roach was questioned once on Aug. 27, and he volunteered to meet the sheriff's office detectives for a polygraph on Aug. 28, but never showed. Roach fled from his residence, later reappearing in Belpre, Ohio, the sheriff's office said. The Kanawha Sheriff's Office and the FBI went with the Belpre Police Dpartment and Washington County (Ohio) sheriff's deputies around Belpre on Aug. 29, searching for him. Roach was arrested Aug. 30 by the Ohio State Highway Patrol in Washington County.

Kanawha County sheriff's detectives interviewed Roach. At the same time, Brown's body was recovered in Meigs County from the Ohio River.

Yes! And no more chances for him to look so pleased and smiley like his most recent FB pic!

Crashed into LE cruiser in an attempt to get away too.He knew he was done for! RIP Ericka ..............:(

That's from February 2007 :D

[Which I only finally realized when I was trying to figure out how a Thursday chase fit in with no one having been able to find him until Saturday and realized it couldn't fit with the timeline. LOL ]

So where was Ericka from the 10th until she was found on the riverbank? Did he keep her the whole time and, if so, where? And under what circumstances?

Since sources were saying it was most likely Ericka almost from the moment the body was found, it seems like her death must have been very recent.
