WV State Police: Abducted Marion County child to return to West Virginia Saturday
A Marion County child found Thursday by authorities in Texas is returning to West Virginia Saturday, according to the West Virginia State Police.

According to police, Gracelynn June Scritchfield's mother, SS, left Morgantown Airport en route to Pecos, Texas, with senior trooper Michelle Shaffer of the Crimes Against Children Unit to be reunited with the 4-year-old girl.

Gracelynn Scritchfield returns home after abduction - Video
It was an emotional reunion Saturday afternoon, when Gracelynn Scritchfield was reunited with her family after being abducted by her father, Arlie Hetrick III on July 13th.

Gracelynnn’s grandmother, BS, said even before her abduction it was never easy allowing her to stay with Hetrick, “he was very controlling”.

“We got her a puppy while she was gone,” said SS, holding her daughter in arms.

SS recalled the first thing she did after being reunited with her daughter in Midland, Texas.

“We went to bed and cuddled and went to sleep,” she said.

SS said they were both crying when they were reunited. She said she “very relieved” to see her.

“I couldn’t even get her to go to sleep, she was so excited, she was wanting to play,” SS said.

She recalled her reaction when she learned her granddaughter was safe.

She said that she cried and screamed, ‘they found my baby, my grandbaby.” She said she was “ready to go get her,” BS said.

“I’m glad she’s home,” FS said. He recalled how his granddaughter said, “I love you, Pappy.”

Senior West Virginia State Police Trooper M. Shaffer, who works in the Crimes Against Children Unit, was one of the troopers who escorted the mother and daughter back to Marion County.

“I think the contributing factor here was that people paid attention to the news and to the media and to the Amber Alert and what was put out there, that’s how she was found,” Shaffer said.

She said it her understanding that SS was told that someone at a splash park in Texas had seen the father and daughter and reported it.

It is nice that he took her to a splash park. It seems like he was trying to make it a good time for them, not a bad time. Although it was a very stupid move on his part.
