Sometimes I think Fayette County is home to some kind of sci-fi warp portal or black hole or stargate or something.

I can only imagine that rural areas are so much harder to search than urban ones, and with West Virginia's geographic make up, it's got to be a nightmare to do a proper search.

True. And Fayette is particularly rough -- deep gorges, very heavily wooded in many areas.

Details of Disappearance

Cruz was last seen in Deep Water, West Virginia on April 1, 2016. She left her mother's residence in the 1100 block of Boonesboro Road after an argument and was last seen running into the woods, towards the water. She has never been heard from again.

Investigators don't believe Cruz necessarily met with foul play, but they do think she is probably dead. Her case remains unsolved.

This seems to be one of those cases where they know absolutely nothing. I can't even find anything from her mother regarding her state of mind when she ran off, or what the argument was about.

If there's a black hole, you'll probably find 5 Italian kids in it.

Right? Pretty sure those kids never left their family's property, sadly.
I never bought the theories that they survived either. People obviously played cruel jokes on them. (Plus there's no Sicilian Mafia in Fayetteville.)

Almost a year later and still no explanation as to why her NamUs page has been removed.
She's still on the Charley Project though.

It's not worth it to speculate why IMHO, because there could be several plausible reasons... None of which have a happy ending.

When I read that she ran into the woods, towards the water, I thought it was more likely that she injured herself and succumbed to the elements, but the map of her block tells a different story. The "woods" between the houses and the Kanawha River are maybe 100 feet wide. So, unless she changed direction and kept going, that's where she ended up. The typical water temperature of the Kanawha River on April 1st is in the low-to-mid 50s; at that temperature, within 3 minutes she would've been in cold shock - uncontrollable gasping for air/rapid breathing, which could cause drowning, and spike in BP/HR, which could lead to heart failure. At anywhere from minute 3-30, incapacitation begins, due to blood rushing to protect vital organs, leaving arms and legs weak and swimming nearly impossible. This also leads to drowning. It's probable that she didn't make it past this stage, as hypothermia/loss of consciousness would've taken at least a half hour; that's a long time to fight off drowning.

The Kanawha River is about 90-95 miles from that point in Fayette County to the Ohio River. Then it's 981 miles to the Mississippi. How long/far she floated before someone saw her is anyone's guess, and the further away she was, the less likely that anyone will make the connection to this case (and that's if she was seen at all). If she just kept on floating, never washing up somewhere or encountering animals, she'd pass Charleston, Huntington, Cincinnati, Louisville, Evansville, Memphis, Baton Rouge, and New Orleans before finally getting to the Gulf.
