Gabby Petito case: Florida cowboy says 'no surviving' swamp where police are searching for Brian Laundrie
[...]

Laundrie’s survival skills have been at the center of conversation since the 23-year-old’s parents first reported him missing Friday, Sept. 17, just two days after he was declared a person of interest in the disappearance of his fiancée, Gabby Petito. ...

McEwen, who has been assisting North Port Police Department in searching the preserve for signs of Laundrie, remains doubtful the Youtuber has what it takes to make it more than a couple of days in the swamp-like reserve.

"I’ve been in the woods in and out all my life … I have learned a lot in my life, and one thing I know is no one is gonna survive out there for two weeks on foot," McEwen said.

Gabby Petito case exposes dark side of ‘van life’

Van life has gained steam amid the pandemic, with young people untethered from office work and looking to travel by car. On Instagram alone, there are 11 million posts tagged #vanlife, many of them featuring young, nubile travellers in front of beautiful scenery. But those in the community are quick to note that the lifestyle isn’t all it’s Instagrammed to be, and that a dangerous underbelly lurks beneath.

The 165cm, 52kg Crump, who mainly travels solo, has endured a number of incidents with creepy men making crude comments and threatening her, leaving her scared for her life. She sleeps with her keys within reach, should she need to make a quick exit.

Other van-lifers note that they are constantly on guard. Sunny Flaherty, 24, who has been on the road with boyfriend Jordan Summerlin, 26, for the past five years, recalled a terrifying incident a few years back. She and a caravan of friends were huddled around a campfire in the Arizona desert when a menacing man approached the group.

'Just to be clear, Gabby had four parents,' her father, Joseph Petito, said at the beginning of Sunday's funeral services for his daughter. Joseph and her stepfather, Jim Schmidt, spoke at the start of the service, recalling and describing Gabby, saying she had a positive spirit. After, Joseph and Jim hugged each other. Police say the search at the reserve is continuing by air. They need water levels to drop in some areas. Many of the trails are very flooded I noticed when I was out there.

The @NorthPortPolice tell us the FBI are now leading the search for Brian Laundrie. The search this week “will be scaled back and targeted based on intelligence.” They (NPPD) also will no longer be doing interviews unfortunately since they are no longer the lead @winknews

No surviving Carlton Reserve

The Carlton Reserve is home to 13-foot alligators, panthers, black bears, wild boar and several lethal varieties of snakes. McEwen says that even if Laundrie could manage to fend off the park’s most terrifying predators, its insects alone could be enough to do him in.

Asked about the possibility Laundrie may have died trying to hide in the reserve, McEwen was certain Laundrie’s body would have been found by now.

"Anything dead you find in the woods, you're gonna look up, you’re gonna see buzzards flying like crazy," he said. "No buzzards, no body is my theory. And I haven’t seen any buzzards flying."

How Brian Laundrie's behavior could provide clues about his disappearance
[...]

When the police got there, Gabby is sobbing as she talked with officers. Laundrie, however, was calm and seemingly unemotional.

"In terms of this disorder, they have no core values," Dr. Huysman said of someone who might display narcissistic behaviors.

Dr. Huysman says this knowledge can indicate how a person like that might react under the kind of pressure investigators are putting on Laundrie now.

"They are very likely to run away, to hide, to think they can get away with it," Huysman said.

FBI back at Laundrie house; Authorities still searching for Brian Laundrie (winknews.com)
[...]

This weekend, there hasn’t been much about any new developments. WINK News Safety and Security Specialist Rich Kolko says the lack of activity could be a good sign.

“While a lot of the physical activity may be reduced as time goes on, there’s a lot of work being done behind the scenes. There’s agents writing subpoenas, conducting surveillances. Everything to build that timeline,” Kolko said.

“They need to complete the search in Sarasota so they can positively say that Brian Laundrie is not there,” said Kolko.

North Port Police told WINK News that crews have also been searching the preserve at night. The FBI announced it will now be the lead agency in the search for Laundrie and that the North Port Police Department will only be assisting.

"Hopefully, water will lower in areas hard to currently access. Specific questions about the search will now need to be directed to them. NPPD will continue to assist based on their direction. Unfortunately, that also means interviews need to run through them too." (2/2)

Gabby Petito's Best Friend Says Brian Laundrie Had 'Jealousy Issues': 'Toxic Relationship'

"I tried not to judge their relationship, but I knew something was off," Davis explains. "I just, I didn't expect this, obviously. I just thought he was just controlling. And bit by bit, she was almost... The more we were hanging out, and the more she was away from [the relationship], the more she got comfortable and was getting into her own skin and then, she started working."

... Petito had been working 50 hours a week at a local Taco Bell prior to the couple's trek, which began in early July. She says Laundrie did not want Petito working, after the two had quit their jobs at a nearby Publix with the pandemic's onset.

"He could keep an eye on her at Publix," Davis says. "He didn't want her to work, and she did. And he was mad about it. And he always tried to get what he wanted and he did, because he wanted the van life and he rushed to that so that she wasn't going to be able to work anymore."
