I am sure at that point they were suspicious of everyone which is normal protocol. Imo, they took her panties that she had worn because it would be quicker and easier to get a DNA match than one taken from hairs in her hairbrush. She may have let others use her hairbrush at times.

So I don't see anything sinister about using the panties since they knew she had recently worn them (most likely right before she took her shower that morning or the night before).

I am glad this is all coming in. It shows they didn't have tunnel vision and were checking all angles and people like they should have done.

The defense sure cant say this was a rush to judgement case or they didn't look at any other possible suspects.

I agree. It was standard protocol to look into the family as she was last known to be alone with a family member before she was heard screaming and went missing. They had to clear him so they could move on.
