SNIPPED:

To assist the search, a Bob-Cat mower was brought in to trim long grass in the hope of finding clues to the whereabouts of Zahra, who has been missing for more than a month.

The animal bones are complicating the search.

"The area is bone-infested," Tommy Courtner, Caldwell County's Emergency Services director, told the Winston-Salem Journal newspaper.

Wednesday morning, investigators returned to an area along Dudley Shoals Road to search for evidence connected to the homicide of Zahra Clare Baker. This time, in addition to searching along the banks of Gunpowder Creek, they also looked in the water itself.

Several Caldwell County agencies gathered at the Hudson Fire and Rescue station at 7 a.m. Wednesday before heading out to Dudley Shoals Road near Burns Road to search for evidence, beginning at the Dudley Shoals bridge and spanning out in a half mile in each direction, said Tommy Courtner, Caldwell County EMS director.

DUDLEY SHOALS --

Investigators looking for the remains of Zahra Baker dug a hole at the Dudley Shoals search site Wednesday afternoon and marked the site with an evidence flag.

All of the dirt from the circular hole – which measures about 10 feet around and 2.5 feet deep – was removed from the site. A white evidence flag – like ones used previously to mark bone identification – was placed next to the hole.

The hole is about 10 feet from the riverbank and about 25 feet from where the paved road ends.

- A source close to the Zahra Baker investigation says that crews found human remains while searching in Caldwell County Wednesday.
Hickory police have not confirmed the discovery of human remains, but released a statement Thursday saying, "Search teams in Caldwell County yesterday located evidence that could provide valuable information in the Zahra Baker case. This evidence will be analyzed at the NC State Bureau of Investigation's lab. We understand the concern and interest in this case by the public but we must be cautious in prematurely releasing information so it will not jeopardize any future criminal proceedings."

A source very close to the Zahra Baker investigation confirmed human remains were discovered in Wednesday's search of Dudley Shoals Road along Gunpowder Creek.

Hickory police would only say they did find evidence and it's being tested by the SBI. Zahra Baker's mother Emily arrived in Hickory from her home in Australia Wednesday night and she went to the house around 6 a.m. Thursday. She wanted to collect Zahra's things that were left behind.

Wednesday, crews searched off Dudley Shoals Road and Burns Road. Elisa Baker lived off Burns Road in the past and she took investigators there a few weeks ago to search. Investigators collected evidence, and Hickory police said that evidence was sent to the SBI for testing. They said they would not release any information prematurely because it could hurt their homicide investigation.

Hickory police do not plan to hold a press conference Thursday.

he hole wasn’t visible on Wednesday, before law enforcement closed the road to traffic around mid-day. Inside this hole is a smaller, distinct, round hole in the dirt. All of the dirt from the hole was also taken with the investigators.

A white evidence flag was marked at the edge of the hole. At previous search sites, a white flag was used to mark bones.

The hole was about 25 feet from the end of where a paved access road ends.

On Thursday, investigators returned to the Christie Road location a few miles away. Earlier in the week, Hickory police had said they were finished with the site. New leads led them back there, though, resulting in the road being shut down while investigators continued their search.

Christie Road is where Zahra’s prosthetic leg was found on Oct. 26. A bone now being tested at the SBI lab was found there Nov. 3.

Hickory police would not comment on whether any evidence has come back from the SBI lab, saying they did not want to jeopardize the case.
