That same day, she was supposed to drop off her transcripts at West Virginia State College, where she had plans of taking nursing classes. Police said Metheny never made it to WVSC or to pick up her kids
As the years go by, the search for Metheny continues.
"Fifteen years sounds like a long time, but it also feels like she disappeared yesterday," Metheny's stepfather Bill Daniel said
On the day of her disappearance, Kanawha County deputies began an investigation.
"Frankly, it's been open ever since," Sgt. Brian Humphreys said.
What seems like the most significant break in the case came four days after her disappearance when Metheny's van was found parked on the West Side of Charleston. Her personal belongings, including her purse and cell phone, were missing.
Humphreys told Eyewitness News investigations were conducted differently back then due to the lack of technology compared to today.
"We didn't have the ability to canvass the neighborhood and ask for video from any cell phone cameras or doorbells," Humphreys said.
Metheny's case has changed hands at the Kanawha County Sheriff's Office several times.
"We don't classify this as a cold case. We still get tips from time to time. Every lead we received has been thoroughly investigated, and that continues with any leads that we get," Humphreys said.
"We've been very lucky with our detectives and the police force. They've chased down leads up and down the East Cast," Daniel said.
Along with deputies, Daniel believes someone out there holds the key to the puzzle and knows where Melanie Metheny is.
"This is a life, and it is negatively affecting so many other people. The person with information can bring closure to a lot of loved ones," Daniel said.
