It was a radio interview with the court reporter who was in court as he was charged.

Agree. Given the age of the accused and his siblings and the age of Samantha’s eldest daughter I think that there would be likely some mutual social connections there.

Social/school - the Catholic schools join together for sports days etc. and often know each other from feeder primary schools....

For all we know his girlfriend may have tipped the police. The police are not saying what public help they have received, for obvious reasons.
