CA CA - East Area Rapist/Golden State Killer *ARREST* #5

Broomsticks placed in sliding doors. Dowels inserted into bedroom windows. Handguns near the nightstand. Large dogs suddenly introduced to homes.

Decades after [URL='https://www.sacbee.com/news/local/article245135085.html']Joseph James DeAngelo
began his serial murder and rape spree in Sacramento as the East Area Rapist, hundreds of area residents are recalling the terror they felt as he haunted the city’s eastern suburbs, slipping into homes in the night to assault victims, then disappear seemingly without a trace.

Their recollections — from residents, people who were children at the time, and potential victims — are collected in an extraordinary 226-page online bookassembled by Sacramento County District Attorney Anne Marie Schubert, whose own childhood was affected by the crime spree.

Can anyone tell me why he killed Katie and Brian Maggiore?

''On Feb. 2, 1978 – a Thursday – Air Force Sgt. Brian Maggiore, 21, and his 20-year-old wife, Katie, were murdered when their evening stroll ended in a frantic chase and bursts of gunfire.

Detectives could not know it at the time, but the Maggiores’ deaths four blocks away from their apartment marked a critical turning point in the crime spree of the East Area Rapist, also known as the Golden State Killer.''

''But the Maggiore killings are believed to be his first, and detectives who have worked the case for decades still are mystified by what triggered the slayings.''

''Did the pair stumble across the suspect in a ski mask as he was casing his next rape victim’s home? Or had he graduated to a new level of violence, and they were the first unfortunate victims?''

''One theory was that Brian Maggiore was known to be protective of his wife, and their encounter on the street or in the yard could have escalated''.

''Detectives have speculated that the suspect, who shot the young couple in the backyard of a home as they fled, was attempting to protect his identity after the Maggiores saw him, according to The Washington Post.''

“He (Brian) wasn’t going to let this go,” Biondi mused. “He would fight, and it might have been that aspect where Brian would try to defend both of them.”
I know this theory, hoped for a definite answer.

Is anyone else reading the new book by DeAngelo's brother-in-law that just came out? I highly recommend it as an interesting read.

He does have a comment on the 1981-1986 time period, but I'm pretty sure I wouldn't be able to quote it here. Am I correct?

Since he (and I) are local, he does add more information to the timeline as far as locations. I was surprised to see that one of the EAR's presumed prowl/burglary incidents was barely a half of a block from my current house. (Eek!)

What's the book? Name and author please.

''All the while, the Golden State Killer was hiding in plain sight. DeAngelo wove a web of deception, hiding his secret life for decades and fooling even those closest to him into thinking he was a normal person. But in this reflective tale, Jim shares the strange behavior that stands out, giving clues to DeAngelo’s dark secrets.

To Jim, DeAngelo was his sister’s husband, a man he trusted with his children, a man he thought he knew for 48 years. Walk through Jim’s memories of DeAngelo, from their shared hobbies to red flags in DeAngelo’s behavior that stand out sharply in hindsight. Jim also dispels myths about serial killers, and shares the similarities between DeAngelo and other infamous serial murderers.''

Just an FYI, this is currently a kindle unlimited selection if you are a member of Kindle Unlimited.

Furthermore there is evidence that suggests the shoe prints found in GSK case are very similar to the shoe print found in the Keddie murder scene.

Also, both Keddie and GSK cases have mention of a left handed assailant.
Thanks for these side-by-side images.

Am I correct in assuming both shoes are of the left foot, and the dirt shoe print has the toe at the bottom in the photo? If so, it seems you can rule out a match because the outside pattern of the heel of the shoe photo angles upward, whereas that same pattern in the shoe print image angles downward (on the right side in the shoeprint photo, but on left side of the shoe if you’re considering the wearer’s point of view.)

I know nothing about investigating shoe prints so I could be wrong. Can anyone challenge the above reasoning? Could either of the images be reversed?

Maybe the image poster didn’t imply an exact match, only a similarity (If the photos were taken years apart, you wouldn’t expect them to be the same shoe, but maybe the wearer had a preference for a certain brand with similar soles?)

I read a really good Los Angles Times profile on him. Very long and thorough. Acquired a lot of that information from there about his family life. The biggest details that stood out were his college lies to his first girlfriend Bonnie, his hunting and trespassing during college, the way he began his nighttime window snooping with Bonnie, his lost police job and the timeline alongside his wife's law career, the note that they slept in separate bedrooms, the details about their daughters' births, and the fact that she didn't pursue a divorce from him despite being _a divorce lawyer_. Based on timelines, it seems he committed two attacks during the months that his wife was pregnant with first (1981) and second (1986) daughters. The fact that he committed attacks shortly before the births of his daughters almost feels significant, like it was a response to the pregnancies more than anything. No linked attacks after 1986.

In 1986 he would have been I think 41. I just don't believe that he lost interest, suddenly cared for women, or felt more fulfilled as a dad. That being said, I'm going to hope that was the case. I would hate to learn that he picked some other town in NoCal or CentralCal or SoCal and we just don't know about the connection yet. The fact that they've recently collected more samples from him to do additional testing makes me think they have suspicions.

"the way he began his nighttime window snooping with Bonnie,"

He may have begun his prowling many years before Bonnie. If you listen to the related podcast to the LA Times GSK series, Man In the Window, you have one of the siblings in the surrogate family of Deangelo’s (“Judy”) recounting a middle-of-the-night prowling incident, when she was in high school (same age of Deangelo), outside her bedroom window. She now suspects that was Deangelo (she was too afraid to move to try to get a look at the prowler, so it remains just a suspicion.) I say the odds are good it was him.

Also, a high-school friend speaks out about a dog killing by Deangelo during one of their (apparently numerous) teen-age burglaries together (and also says Deangelo was mostly interested in stealing food and guns - so it’s likely he had a handgun as a teenager.) The lead Sac prosecutor called this man “Gary S” during the proceedings, but the podcasts refers to him as “Jim."

Man In The Window podcast:

“Judy” interview
“Bonnie and Joe” Ep 5, prowling incident mentioned around 10 minutes in (Apple podcast version.)

“Gary S”/“Jim” interview
“The Many Faces of Joe Deangelo” Ep 9, the entire interview of “Jim” starts around 38:00 minutes in (Apple podcast version.)

Also in Ep 9, podcast host Paige St. John gives a list of what charges are missing in the litany of charges he plead guilty or admitted to (around 26:40.) She briefly mentions two Marin County rapes that were in the original sealed indictment but apparently dropped later. (For the California unfamiliar and/or SRHM studiers, Marin county is just north of San Francisco and around 100 miles west of East Sacramento; it’s also the county south of Sonoma County and Santa Rosa - Santa Rosa is only about 15 miles north of Petaluma, one of the larger cities in Marin County.)

The 12-26-75 team has done a deep dive into the Maggiore investigation, and they discovered the investigation found there was a house around the corner that was vacant (owners already moved out, trying to sell), that had been broken into and apparently used by someone - not just broken into and left. They wonder if it was Deangelo who was using that vacant house to stage an attack on Katie Maggiore (and hide her inside the vacant house.) They also dispel that more-than-one-perpetrator myth.

Their series started on June 28, 2023 on their Facebook page and went several weeks. Here is the link to that first post in the Maggiore series, but there is a problem: the link below only shows that first post by itself - and I don’t know how to get to the timeline for that day so you can read the all the daily posts in chronological order - to read everything. Does anyone know?

[More: I tried searching for Year = 2023, and it seems to return a lot of posts, but their not in any order, and I don’t know how to get them in chronological order. Note, I’m on a computer, MacOS.]

To make sure you’re reading the right post, it ends with this: "Prepare to question everything you think you know about the events of February 2, 1978."
