"Checked in yesterday and that's when we pulled up and saw the investigation going on and them digging in the backyard and...what we think was digging," WL, a neighbor, said. "They had jack hammers, and roto hammers going, lots of lights out."

LR says a local flew a drone while the digging was happening.

"I did look at the videos myself and what it looked like to me is they were sifting through fine dirt to find things and they would find things and they would put them in baggies," Romero, said.

She says they came out with bags and took them to the forensics team.

MISSING BOYS: Former Bakersfield Police Lieutenant Gary Carruesco says authorities investigating the missing California City boys case are dealing with many factors. With hundreds of miles of desert to search through and more than a dozen convicted sex offenders who live within two miles of the boys' home, Carruesco says authorities have a lot to sort out. No one is completely ruled out as a suspect until the boys are found, not even the adoptive parents, according to Carruesco.

California City police chief provides update on the investigation.

  • In the very beginning a reporter mentioned that some video was taken from neighbors. The chief didn't respond directly to his comment.
  • The chief was not aware that Orrin had a fractured leg.
  • The chief says they do suspect foul play based on the fact that they don't know how the children left the yard.
  • The search warrant was obtained easily - the kids were missing.
  • The other children were removed as is routine until there is an investigation done by CPS.
  • 11:05 Reporter: Did the luminol find anything? Chief: Not that I know of.
  • Interesting facial expression when responding to a question about whether they are searching in Bakersfield. About 13:05.
  • About 16:30 - the chief confirms that there has never been a sighting of any of the children since the family has been there (since September).
  • He says near the end that he will have to look into whether or not the investigators want to release the 911 call.
  • Chief says they Dug backyard for any clues and to rule out that kids were in the yard... when asked if backyard search found anything useful, Chief said No.

The Chief says foul play is suspected, but the adoptive parents are not considered the main suspects as there are no main suspects at this time.

The four children belonging to the adoptive parents, Trezell and Jacqueline West are being detained by Child Services. Two of those children are one set of adopted siblings, the other two children are the biological children of Trezell and Jacqueline.

"Anytime anything happens in a household where it involves any kids, all the kids are taken out of the household," Walker, said.

Chief Walker says there is proof children have been living in the house. Eyewitness News asked him if those children include Orrin and Orson West and he said not necessarily.

Authorities extensively dug up terrain in the backyard in recent days to make sure the boys weren't underneath, according to Walker. "We are just trying to dig up anything, any clues that we could possibly find, to find out where they have gone and also to confirm they are not in the backyard."

Walker confirmed that K-9 units were also deployed into the home multiple times and that the boys' scent did not leave the house. The Wests told 23ABC News on Dec. 23, that their other children were on "vacation" when Orrin and Orson went missing.

Authorities knocked on nearly every door in their neighborhood, and "none of the neighbors have seen the kids." Walker said.

"Ever?" a reported asked.

"No," Walker replied. The family moved into the neighborhood in September, Walker confirmed.

Within a day after the children were reported missing, the adoptive parents' cell phones and other technological devices have been in police custody, along with at least one of their vehicles. Walker was unable to comment on whether the parents took a lie detector test or whether they denied one.
