Wilhelm (Will) Rempel has been joined up with his brother and sister-in-law to face a jury trial next year on kidnapping and first-degree murder in the slaying of Ryan Lane nearly three years ago.

The date of March 14, 2016, was confirmed for Will Rempel, 40, on Friday in a brief hearing before Court of Queen’s Bench Justice Bryan Mahoney.

Timothy Mark Rempel and Sheena Cuthill were previously ordered to stand trial on the same day. All face the same charges and have been denied bail.

The trial is running this week, scheduled for 6 weeks but expected to wrap up sooner.

Sadly, Ryan's father suspected that something was wrong when Ryan received a phone call from a stranger offering to help him with access to his young daughter, but Ryan wouldn't listen. Ryan's father followed Ryan to the parking lot where Ryan met his murderers at midnight. Ryan witnessed his son get into the red truck that took Ryan to his death.

After he was murdered, he was burned, but part of his cell phone and his school ring were found.

"Recovered text messages will show that planning to kill Lane was in the works for weeks, if not months, according to the prosecution opening statement to the jury.

Feb. 6, 2012 was "joyous and ultimately tragic" for Lane, prosecutor Tom Buglas told the jury, as Lane visited with the girl for the first time in two years at a Chuck-E-Cheese.

"Ryan Lane was purposefully murdered to keep him from seeing his daughter," he said, noting that Lane was fighting Cuthill's court application for sole custody."

The woman who pulled the strings to have Ryan Lane murdered asked her mother for information about making people disappear:

"Later on Nov. 19, Sheena Cuthill messaged her mother, Kim Cuthill.

"In all of ur life time with the bikers u hung out with n whoever else ... Did you ever make pple disappear?"

Kim Cuthill said she hadn't and encouraged her daughter to get a lawyer and use mediation to deal with Lane."

Wiretapped phone conversations between the accused and various others, including their parents, were played in court on Friday...

Police interrogated Wilhelm on July 17, 2012 for several hours. Afterwards he calls his brother in a panic...

Though both brothers told police they had never met Lane, a conversation recorded between Wilhelm and his mother in April 2012 tells a different story. He admits to her that Tim called Lane the night he disappeared.

The jury was told the Ryan Lane murder trial had taken an "unexpected turn" after the prosecution rested its case on Monday, and the panel of 12 men and women were told not to come back until Friday. The jury was told that the defence will make motions on Wednesday before Justice Alan Macleod. Those motions will be protected by a publication ban and the jury will not be told what is going on.

"These cases sometimes take unexpected turns," said Macleod. "The good news is, you're going to have a break, enjoy the good weather. http://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/calga...hill-tim-wilhelm-rempel-crown-rests-1.3520059

Taking the witness stand in her own defence, Cuthill said the initial discussions about dissuading Lane from pursuing access to the daughter they shared involved friends of Wilhelm Rempel approaching him.

But within hours of Lane`s disappearance on Feb. 7, 2012, Cuthill gave her husband Timothy Rempel the go-ahead for he and his brother to approach the victim.

Defence counsel Alain Hepner took Cuthill through a series of text exchanges between her and several other individuals, including her husband, culminating in a brief conversation beginning at 1:20 a.m. on Feb. 6, 2012...

During testimony in his own defence, Timothy Rempel told defence lawyer Allan Fay he had nothing to do with the Feb. 7, 2012, disappearance of Lane, even though he lured the city man to a dark rural road northwest of Calgary.

Rempel said he got in a fight with Lane and bloodied his nose, but left him alive by the side of the road, along with his brother...

In the days that followed, after learning Lane had gone missing, the witness quizzed his brother on what happened to the victim, he said. “Will just told me not to ask questions I didn’t want answers to,” Rempel told a four-man, eight-woman Court of Queen’s Bench jury.

A secretly-taped conversation between murder suspects Wilhelm Rempel and his brother showed both were aware Ryan Lane’s body was burned before it was discovered, the Crown told jurors Monday.

In his closing address to a four-man, eight-woman jury, Crown prosecutor Tom Buglas said the evidence was fatal to the brothers...

The wiretapped exchange was captured June 13, 2012, eight days before charred remains were found in a burn barrel not far from Tim Rempel’s Beiseker home.

Sheena Cuthill-Rempel, her husband Tim Rempel and his brother William Rempel were all convicted in the case earlier this week.

On Friday, all three were given a minimum life sentence with no chance of parole for 25 years by Justice Alan Macleod.

The Rempel brothers were also given 10 years for kidnapping Ryan Lane, a 24-year-old Calgary father, back in 2012. That will be served concurrently to the first-degree murder sentence.

Mother of Ryan Lane's daughter appeals first degree murder verdict. Clearly she's hoping to get off using a technicality. She is guilty, she did communicate regarding the plan to murder the father of her child, but she believes that that communication should be excluded because she planned the murder with her husband.

"In her notice of appeal, Cuthill makes three arguments in support of her application that her conviction should be overturned. She alleges:
  • The trial judge erred in denying Cuthill's application for exclusion of evidence on the basis of spousal privilege
  • The trial judge erred by charging the jury on the doctrine of willful blindness
  • The verdict was unreasonable

Normally communications between spouses are privileged but text messages between Cuthill and her husband were admitted as evidence even after her lawyer argued they shouldn't be.

The text messages between the two were some of the most damning evidence at trial.

"Can I trust Will to have this done without cops showing up on my doorstep?" Cuthill says to Tim Rempel in one text."
