GUILTY Canada - Taylor Van Diest, 18, beaten to death, Armstrong, BC, 31 Oct 2011

otto - just playing devil's advocate on your last post - Clifford Olson's victims did not have similar characteristics. I don't see the similar characteristics in Robert Picton's or Russell Williams' victims.

There are a lot of unsolved murders and missing people under similar circumstances, imo.

Didn't Clifford Olsen approached young teens, offered them jobs, then alcohol, then drive them to remote areas where he murdered them? IIRC, he went to one mall more than once to meet victims. His ace card was that he picked child up in one district and left them in a different district. Police weren't cooperating with each other, so the murders took longer to solve.

I agree otto - the similarity with Olson's victims was in the circumstances since his victims were both male and female ranging in age from 10 to 18 years-old. Same with Picton's victims - taken from the same place but different age and appearance. Williams' is different altogether - murdered one female he knew and one he did not know with an age difference of almost 20 years.

Serial predators don't want to get caught, imo. They will make enough changes to their victims and methods to avoid detection.

Police have been asking anyone else with information to come forward. Since he started at the age of 18 with a home invasion and assault on a young woman in 2004, assaulted someone from an escort agency in 2005 and then murder in 2012, I suspect there are more victims. Unless he had a girlfriend between 2005 and 2012, there's most likely more to this story.

From the two articles below, it sounds like Matthew Foerster went into hiding at the end of December and I'm guessing that his father knew where he was the entire time - which could be the reason for the obstruction charges. I doubt very much that he was working as a trucker at that time, as he would have been easy to locate if he was working. My next question would be ... didn't his mother know where he was too?

I searched missing women in the BC and AB RCMP sites and there do not appear to be any women missing that are close to his age or similar to the victim we know about. I wonder what he was doing from 2005 - 2011.

"Dec 30, 2011 / 10:29 am

On December 28, My Vally Sun, a media outlet in Lumby, cited an unconfirmed report that an arrest was made in Cherryville in connection with the murder of Van Diest. Moskaluk is refuting this claim and made it clear no arrest was made in Cherryville."

"We also would like to establish a time line of his travels and activities from December 2011 up to the end of March 2012."

Bringing this over from the Highway of Tears thread ...

Ok, I admit, I don't know if this guy has committed any of these multitude of unsolved murders. But, fwiw, I've discovered that he was a TRUCKER. Yep! The old trucker guy, cruising the highways and byways. hmmmm

He is now a suspect in a second sexual assault. dna available.

LE arrested him in the town of Collingwood. He was at a local motel there.

From some of what I've read, LE had been on to him for awhile, there were rumors in the town where Taylor lived that it was someone from Cherryville.

LE followed him around and retrieved discarded cups to obtain his dna.

So you see, he wasn't just some local boy, he was a traveling man.

His crimes dated back so far, to 2004, I believe.

Father, son arrested in B.C. Halloween teen murder

Thanks for the details about the son being a trucker! What caught my attention was that his DNA was obtained by RCMP collecting discarded cups. In Canada ...

"Bill C-104 therefore permits the taking of a bodily substance without the consent of the suspect. During the execution of the warrant, the suspect may be detained or asked to accompany the police, who must make reasonable efforts must be made by the police to ensure that the privacy of the person is respected."

Canadian law outlining DNA collection is linked below. I suppose it's possible that RCMP had a warrant and decided to collect the suspect's DNA without notifying the suspect, but they could also have compelled him to provide his DNA. Also, since they had a warrant to search his place back in December, his DNA could have been collected from his toothbrush or other personal belongings.

"
1. a warrant issued under the guidance of Bill C-104 would clearly be authorized by law.
2. Bill C-104 sets out a reasonable standard that must be followed before a warrant can be issued. (In sum, there must be sufficient evidence to convince a judge that it would be in the best interests of the administration of justice to require the person to submit to a DNA test for certain designated offences. A judge may require police to abide by additional terms or conditions in order to ensure that the warrant is executed in a reasonable manner.)
3. if the police collect the bodily sample in a manner that respects both the dignity and privacy of the person, as the legislation requires, the seizure will be considered reasonable."

I haven't read through everything yet but is it possible that the father or Matthew wrote that letter to throw people off of his trail if he was moving out of the area anyway? The letter would keep people thinking (falsely) that the perp was still in the area. JMO

Imo, in the interest of crime solving, Canada should have everyone in a database. Why make crime solving expensive and have a multitude of unsolved crimes to boot? I don't get the point in not matching DNA from a crime scene.

I think the UK got it right. Data-banks of DNA don't prevent crime, they just make the crimes easier and cost effective to solve.

With a mobile society, like truckers, salespeople etc, we would be ahead of the game.

I look forward to hearing if Foerster Sr is still a painter and only a painter - in a town with a population of only 1,000 could he have branched out over the years?

I think the letter was written in early November and police lost track of Matthew Foerster at the end of December.

I've followed the debate a bit. Convicts and suspects have their DNA entered into a databank. Suspects that are cleared have their DNA removed from the databank. Found remains DNA is not entered into a databank because samples can only be used for comparing offender profiles with crime scene profiles.

I've seen documentaries from families of missing persons that want DNA profiles entered into a national databank for identification purposes, but last I heard that legislation was stalled. I think it's a privacy issue, including the possibility that people that do not want to be found are added to the database.

Not sure if this means much but the dad's "Offence Date" is stated as Oct 31 - the day of the murder. So he knew what his son had did that same night?

Document Count Offence Date Statute Nature Accused City Of Offence

I suspect that means that the offence is in relation to the murder on October 31. Could there really be a date, other than the date of the murder, on when the father decided to interfere with the investigation or withhold information from police?

"Investigators initially had no idea who they were looking for and "hardly any starting point," said Insp. Brendan Fitzpatrick, operations officer for the RCMP's B.C. major crime section.

"At the very beginning stages of this investigation, it was an absolute mystery," Fitzpatrick said.

"There was very little evidence. It was very distressing, the way it took place."

RCMP only recently found Matthew Foerster in Ontario. While the suspect's father is known to police, the suspect himself had no prior criminal record."

"Ontario woman shaken after encounter with accused killer .

.

Matthew Foerster, who has been charged with murder in the death of Armstrong teenager Taylor Van Diest, was arrested in Ontario.

A young woman who posted her condolences on Taylor Van Diest's memorial site says the teen's accused killer hit on her "over and over."
The woman, who gave her name as Meaghan Kelly, lives in Collingwood, Ont. - the resort town where police arrested Matthew Foerster for Van Diest's murder. Kelly wrote Foerster
recently came on to on her at a Collingwood pub.
"I could have very well been the next victim," she said. "(The accused killer) was insistent on getting
together and doing something."
Talking to Kelly for the first time prompted him to ask her "to get
together with him over and over," she wrote".

OMG is right, and it seems there were others that he was around these last few months.

Did anyone find his or his father's social media accounts?

"The father and son lived at a house on Specht Road. Their arrests are now the talk of the town. With a population of fewer than 1,000 residents, most people in town know the men who were charged.

Some people took the news very hard, such as two men who are friends of the Foerster family and who confronted a CHBC News reporter and cameraman. The pair blocked the CHBC news crew and tried to stop them from filming. The men kept repeating “it’s not over” and continued to follow the CHBC News vehicle afterwards.

One Cherryville resident tells CHBC News that about a year ago he picked up Matthew Foerster as he was hitchhiking to Vernon. The man says Matthew was quiet and says he did not like the man's demeanour."

Read it on Global News: Global BC | Cherryville residents react to news of arrests

That's a pretty strong reaction from some of the Foerster's friends - repeating 'it's not over' and following a news truck?

Thank goodness for video linked court appearances.

"The man charged with the second-degree murder of Armstrong teen Taylor Van Diest was booked into the Kelowna RCMP’s cell block on Friday evening after police transported him from Ontario. He waited more than three days before he appeared in ankle shackles in a Kelowna courtroom Tuesday morning.

Despite the lack of amenities — no reading material, exercise or TV — the 26-year-old Cherryville man looked thinner and healthier than the image of him police distributed after his arrest last Wednesday.

Clean-shaven and with short, dark hair, Foerster stood straight with arms by his side wearing a grey T-shirt in the prisoner’s dock"
