A 2-year-old girl died in Holmes County, Florida, on Tuesday after being left unattended in her mother's vehicle for 14 hours. This is the fourth time this year that a child has died after being left in a hot car in the United States.

The toddler's parents, 23-year-old Kathreen Adams and 32-year-old Christopher McLean, have been charged with child neglect, possession of drug paraphernalia and possession of methamphetamine. However, according to law enforcement officials, more charges are forthcoming, pending the results of an autopsy that was performed Wednesday.

Holmes County Sheriff's deputies responded to a 911 welfare check for a home in the county, which is on the Florida-Alabama state line, just before 4 p.m. EDT on Tuesday. Upon arriving, officers found Adams holding her child in her arms. Adams reportedly told the officers she found the child unresponsive inside her house and didn't know what happened.

Once investigators started questioning the mother, they quickly found inconsistencies in her story. During a press conference on Tuesday, Holmes County Sheriff John Tate said the father was not cooperating with deputies during questioning.

"Investigators on the scene had EMS take a body temperature of the baby, which the body temperature of the child was 107 degrees, so we knew something was not adding up," said Tate.

Adams eventually admitted she picked up her children from a babysitter around midnight and decided to leave them both in the vehicle. Officials say the 4-year-old child was able to get out of the car, and the Department of Children and Families currently has that child under custody.

Christopher McLean, 32, and Kathreen Adams, 23, were arrested on charges of child neglect and possession of methamphetamine and drug paraphernalia following the death of their toddler on Tuesday, according to the Holmes County Sheriff’s Office.

The girl was left in a car outside the couple’s home in the unincorporated Florida Panhandle community of Prosperity for about 14 hours while McLean and Adams were inside the entire time, the sheriff’s office said.

Initially, Adams told investigators that she had found her daughter unresponsive in the house but they became suspicious immediately, Holmes County Sheriff John Tate said during a news conference.

Deputies noticed that the girl felt very hot to the touch. Paramedics found that her temperature was 107 degrees, he said.

“We knew something wasn’t adding up,” while talking to the girl’s mother, Tate said. “It didn’t pass the smell test. Common sense tells you that most of the time if you’re in a home you’re not going to get that hot.”

"When she got home, along with the baby's dad, the baby was asleep in the car seat, and they decided to leave the child in the car and ultimately did not wake up or did not realize the child was in the car until around 3 p.m.," he said.

Deputies searched the couple's and found methamphetamine and drug paraphernalia, and took blood samples of McLean and Adams, Tate said. The result of those tests are pending.

The sheriff’s office said “additional charges are forthcoming pending the results of the autopsy.”

Wondering if I have the right court site - this is the link I have:

can anyone access that & see if that is correct? I marked down Felony, but it could be a misdemeanor case?

I would think they would have at least a first appearance hearing pretty soon since they were arrested on 5/16/23. They might have more charges coming - and maybe that is why there is nothing on the court site yet.

TIA if you can help me!

Looks to me like the website is down. I had that with another FL county yesterday. I’ll check again when I’m on my laptop tonight. Birdie & I are headed to the park for the day. Later, friends!

McLean was uncooperative and invoked his rights "and did not wish to give us a statement or talk to us at that time," according to the sheriff.

Sheriff Tate said there are some discrepancies about what time the couple actually found the girl and when 911 was called. Adams also said the 4-year-old got out of the car and went into the house.

"We do not have any evidence of whether he was in the car or in the house. That's still something we're trying to find out," the sheriff said about the 4-year-old.

A search of the couple's home found methamphetamine, marijuana, CBD gummies and drug paraphernalia, the sheriff told reporters. Adams told authorities that she and McLean smoked marijuana after they went into the house.

When asked if he had a message to the community, the sheriff said: "Don't do drugs. I honestly believe methamphetamine, drugs is the culprit behind this death."

"That's what happens when you use drugs, you lose sense of what's going on in reality and this kind of stuff happens. Probably if they wasn't on drugs, we probably wouldn't be here today," he said.

The 4-year-old child has been placed in the custody of the Department of Children and Families.

Does not look like this court site gives next hearing dates just info on charges.

I wonder what time the 4 y/o got out of the vehicle. Where did that child go when they exited the vehicle? Into the house, assuming it was unlocked? Did the child attempt to find their parents or perhaps wake up Mom/Dad? If the child can be interviewed perhaps more details could be determined.

It would be interesting if the parents were awake/coherent when the 4 y/o appeared and yet, they still did not retrieve the baby from the car. If the 4 y/o exited the car within minutes, and the parents saw them, perhaps the baby could have been saved.

Siblings are a wealth of information even tho most of the time they don't realize what clues they're providing.

According to the Holmes County Advertiser, 23-year-old Kathreen Adams has been charged with aggravated manslaughter. The same charge for 32-year-old father Christopher McClean is pending review by the State Attorney’s Office.

The pair were initially charged with child neglect, possession of methamphetamine, and possession of paraphernalia, per the Holmes County Sheriff’s Office.

In a press conference on May 17, the Holmes County Sheriff’s Office explained that they received a call from Adams saying that her two-year-old daughter was unresponsive. An hour after paramedics arrived, the child was pronounced dead.

Adams later admitted to leaving the child in the car for 14 hours.

The State Attorney’s Office is expected to make a decision on McClean’s charge by the end of the week, the Holmes County Advertiser reports.

The charges stem from the events of May 16 when Margie was found unresponsive in the family car at a Highway 81 residence in the Prosperity community. Sheriff John Tate stated in a May 17 press conference that dispatchers received the call around 3:43 p.m. on May 16 from a “hysterical female.” Records show a deputy arrived on scene within two minutes and was met by an individual carrying an unresponsive child. The deputy immediately began administering CPR on the child until Holmes County EMS arrived and took over. The child was pronounced deceased by EMS at 3:59 p.m.
