Liz, thanks for posting this crime. I read about it on Steve Huff's blog a few days ago (Mysteriew posted that link above)

I was thinking at the time that this was going to be a cold case with little or no news. What a big break that Joey Tierney was observent enought to make a connection to the crime and the monster who he had given a ride to.

Only thing that I can add is possibly Boatman selected the Ocala Forest area because it was a place he could fire a high powered rifle and have it dismissed by witnesses who might hear it as deer hunters.

This is so tragic. I believe this 19 year old would have been capable of many, many murders had he not been stopped. Please lock him up and DON'T LET HIM OUT!!!

Yep, thanks to Mysteriew for finding and posting this case. I've heard nothing on the national level news about it as yet and I guess we won't now.

I was quite surprised when it got solved so quickly. Like you, I almost expected it would end up unsolved. Here we have yet another case of a person whose been a repeat offending criminal since his youth; only to be released and his crime has escalated to the most heinous level.

It's such a shame. I read somewhere earlier that his mother was/is institutionalized for psychiatric problems; and that he was adopted at a fairly young age, but had been nothing but trouble.

Here's the latest articles from the Gainesville Sun and the Ocala Star Banner:

Leo Lansing Boatman made his first appearance Wednesday morning and the judge read the charges against him. It is going to be a death penalty trial.

Talked to a friend of mine tonight & her daughter over heard some LE talking & they said Boatman wanted to kill them to see what it felt like to murder people!

Now is that sick or what?
What are Rainbow people????

I can just about guarantee you that if Mr. Tierney had not been so observant, and this case went cold, Boatman would have been caught eventually anyway, because psychos this overt would eventually just get really sloppy and leave an obvious trail.

Truly chilling, the sheer random nature of this particular crime.

I absolutely agree, in hindsight. Little did I know at the time I posted that this was some blabbermouthed, serial killer wannabe.

Leo Boatman's loose lips will guarantee his conviction.

Oops! :blushing: Sorry about that. Thanks to Spclk for starting this thread!

Here's the latest ... two very good articles, that I highly recommend reading to those following this case.

A troubled life brings questions

Charges when Boatman was a juvenile include arson, theft, burglary, carrying a concealed weapon, escape, battery of a detention staff member, aggravated battery, assault and indecent exposure.

A relative said Boatman had been housed in juvenile facilities starting when he was 12 and dating until a month after his 19th birthday.

It's nice to see they didn't waste any time paying the reward to Mr. Tierney. He certainly deserves every penny of it, and more. No telling how many other lives his tip saved!

I think it would be pretty creepy if he took pictures of the bodies of his two victims. But, it wouldn't surprise me. I hope the camera is found.

I hope I'm not the only person still following this case. I find it intriguing that this 20 year old would carry out murdering two young preppies (how he described them to a friend), even though he was a preppie kid himself. Afterwards, he returns home, gets rid of the murder weapon, starts attending college like nothing happened. Except that he had blabbed his secret about the murders to a friend. Very strange. Yet intriguing.

OCALA - The man charged in the slayings of two college students tried to get the stolen murder weapon back to the owner as soon as he got back home from the Ocala National Forest on Jan. 5, according to investigators' reports.

Leo Boatman, 19, also tried to sell the AK-47 before the slayings, friends told investigators.

Accused Murderer was receiving funds from the state

The above article explains how Boatman was receiving a stipend from the state, as a former foster child in Florida. So, in a sense, suggesting it was a state financed murder.

While Boatman confessed to murdering Amber Peck and
John Parker, he also confessed to the murder of a man in Clearwater on 12/30/05. Boatman has not been charged in that murder. That murdered man was the father of three children.

It's a shame how many lives has this young man wrecked and obliterated, including his own.

Cops: Suspect admits killing 2 campers in Ocala forest

Snippets from article:
January 28, 2006
Leo Boatman, 19, who could face the death penalty, summoned detectives from his jail cell Wednesday for an interview. It was his first in-depth conversation with investigators and one that may link him to a third slaying -- a Dec. 30 killing in Clearwater.

Marion County sheriff's Maj. Chris Blair, who disclosed the interview on Friday, would not discuss details.

Detectives say Boatman killed John Parker and Amber Peck, both 26 and students at Santa Fe Community College who had camped at Hidden Pond in Ocala National Forest. Both were shot to death at close range with a high-powered rifle Jan. 4.

Thanks for this interesting update Liz, I guess this guy really was on his way to being another serial killer! I am so glad he was stopped now and terrible sad that three people had to lose their lives because they crossed his path.

Your not Liz and thanks for posting that..

I know someone related to the deceased.

You're welcome, dragonfly. I agree that he was on his way to becoming a serial killer! It's a very good thing that heroic young man that gave Boatman a lift was paying attention to the news resulting in Boatman's arrest.

I'm not Amaaran, but I think she might have been answering your question from post #29

You couldn't pay me a million bucks to go anywhere near ONF, I remember the following story well and now this........

"In February 1994, two other college students were attacked while visiting the forest, and one was murdered.

John Edwards, a freshman at Florida State University, and his sister, Pam Edwards, a senior at Eckerd College in St. Petersburg, were attacked by Loran K. Cole and William C. Paul after setting up camp at Hopkins Prairie. Edwards died after his throat was slashed and he was beaten in the head. His sister was beaten and raped, but survived. Cole and Paul were convicted of first-degree murder and other charges. Cole was given the death penalty and remains on Florida's Death Row. Paul is serving a life sentence at Apalachee Correctional Institution, West Unit, in Jackson County."

Authorities: man charged in deaths of 2 campers attempts suicide

Associated Press
OCALA, Fla. - An inmate at Marion County Jail charged with slaying two campers in the Ocala National Forest twice attempted to kill himself early Saturday, authorities said.

Leo Boatman, 19, sliced his forearm in an alleged suicide attempt at 2:30 a.m and was taken to Monroe Regional Medical Center, said Capt. James Pogue, spokesman for Marion County Sheriff's Office. Authorities believe Boatman used a razor to cut himself, but don't know how he obtained the razor.

I hate to come across as heartless, but I say give him a fresh razor; and save us taxpayers some money.
