GUILTY FL - Shanti Cooper-Tronnes, 39, murdered, Orlando, 25 May 2018 *Husband Arrested*

Opening statements began Thursday in the murder case of #DavidTronnes in Florida. Prosecutor Michael Smith argued that Tronnes had beaten and strangled his wife Shanti Cooper-Tronnes to death in 2018. The 55-year-old claimed his wife fell in a bathtub and he tried to resuscitate her. "He did it with a premeditated design. He intended to do it," Smith said.

The State has started its opening statement. They say jurors will hear from the medical examiner and say Shanti Cooper died at the hands of David Tronnes.

The prosecution is now going over Tronnes and Cooper's history including the purchase of their Delaney Park home.

Prosecution says in 2017 the "real meat" of their home renovation took place. They say the home renovation caused tension between the Cooper and Tronnes.

According to the prosecution, the home was set to appear on a 'zombie house flipping show.' The prosecution says it was supposed to be a 'lifeline' to save their home. They say Shanti wasn't interested in what they wanted to do.

The prosecution now detailing the hours leading up to Shanti Cooper's death and Tronnes' 911 call.

Prosecution says they will call upwards of 25 witnesses in this case.

The defense has reserved their opening statement. Recess for lunch until 1:00 -- the State will call up their first witness at 1:00.

Prosecution focused heavily on the house renovation being a point of contention between Tronnes and Cooper. They said they got deeper and deeper into it and it eventually became a 'money pit.’

The prosecution also focused on the nature of Cooper's injuries and the crime scene. We'll be back at 1:00 -- for now I'm going to listen to the prosecution's opening statement one more time to glean any new details.

Back from lunch -- we should be hearing from the State's first witness shortly.

The state calls Cynthia Demetres -- a 911 call-taker with Orlando Police who took Tronnes' 911 call.

They are now playing the 911 call.

Tronnes sounds like he is sobbing/wailing on the call while trying to explain to the dispatcher what is happening.

The State now calling Steven Wilson -- an employee of GEICO in insurance fraud. Prior to that he was with the Orlando Police Department. He responded to the call at the Tronnes/Cooper house.

The State now asking Wilson to explain the photos to the courtroom.

Wilson now looking at photographs of the scene.

The defense is now cross examining Wilson.

Several witnesses have been called, but the State is currently questioning Gary Crosby -- an OPD Crime Scene Investigator who was at the scene in April 2018.

Tronnes started the second day of his trial handcuffed and shackled, but it was all taken off before the jury came into the courtroom, where Tronnes spent the rest of the day hearing the state's version of how he allegedly murdered his wife.

"There's blood all over her face, a huge wound, bruising around her neck," a state prosecutor said.

Prosecutors told the jury Tronnes met Shanti online and that Tronnes bought the $600,000 house in Delaney Park with cash, a house that was never in Shanti's name.

During the renovation, Shanti and her son from another marriage lived in one part of the house and Tronnes in another.

Prosecutors say that it had become a money pit.

"This home show, this Zombie House Flipping, was the lifeline out of this mess," a state prosecutor said.

ORLANDO, Fla. – The first witnesses took the stand Thursday in the murder trial of David Tronnes, who stands accused of beating and strangling his wife at their Delaney Park home in 2018.

“You’re going to hear that Shanti Cooper Tronnes was beaten to death and she was strangled,” prosecutors said in opening statements.

The prosecution said the home was undergoing major renovations -- calling it a quote ‘money pit.’

At one point, prosecutors said Tronnes wanted their home to go on a show called “Zombie House Flipping.” But they said Shanti Cooper wanted no part of it.

Gary Crosby, an Orlando Police Department crime scene investigator who was there in 2018 — walked the courtroom through photographs of evidence which included photos of what appeared to be blood on the bathtub.

“There was what looked like signs of diluted blood all the way around the bathtub like where a water level was,” Crosby said.

But the defense team called the blood into question.

Defense: “That amino black do you know how it works?”

Crosby: “Yes, it adheres to the amino acids in your blood is what I’m told.”

Defense: “So it adheres to amino acid protein sources is that correct? It doesn’t do anything to identify whose blood that is does it?”

Crosby: “No ma’am.”

David Tronnes Trial: Victim's friends takes the stand in case of husband accused of killing wife

Oct 13, 2023
In the morning, lawyers tried to get a feel for David and Shanti-Cooper Tronnes’ relationship, asking a friend of Cooper-Tronnes about the couple, and about David himself.

When Shanti Cooper-Tronnes married her husband David Tronnes, she believed he had inherited between $4 and $6 million dollars from his father.

But after the wedding, she kept getting stuck with all the bills — her millionaire husband not helping with so much as the groceries, people close to her recalled after she was brutally beaten and strangled in the Florida home they were reportedly renovating for the reality TV show “Zombie House Flipping.”

Tronnes paid $600,000 in cash for the 4,000-square-foot house with a pool and garage apartment in the picturesque Orlando neighborhood of Delaney Park, but refused to add Cooper-Tronnes’s name to the deed, prosecutors said.
Soon after Tronnes purchased the house, the “real meat of the renovation — or ultimately destruction — of the home took place,” Smith said.

“This house became more than just a project to David Tronnes. It was his life,” Ryan Vescio, who led the investigation into Cooper-Tronnes’ death, told “48 Hours.” Tronnes was “obsessed” with the renovation, but Cooper-Tronnes was financing it, Vescio said, sinking nearly $250,000 of her own money into the project.

Tronnes was initially found incompetent to stand trial “due to ongoing manifestations of the diagnosis of schizophrenia,” his defense attorney said, based on evaluations by two psychiatrists. In May 2022, however, a judge ruled that he was competent following treatment at a state hospital, and moved forward with a trial.
