GA GA - Shirley, 87, & Russell Dermond, 88, Putnam Co, 2 May 2014 - #13

I'm very happy to hear that Sheriff Sill Continues to investigate and leverage other resources. And I'm especially happy to hear that one of those is @othram !

Hoping that this leads to the break that this case needs. This is one of my top five cases that I would love to be solved in my lifetime. I have my theories, of course, and would be interested in what people thought of the son's statements. I thought it was stilted and odd, but that could have been grief.

You are correct up to a point, and then you get it wrong. Just as the ring size of a fat finger must be larger than for that same finger when it was smaller, the roughly half circle resulting from printing the fat finger has a larger half circumference and will produce a wider print on flat paper than the smaller, slender finger print. Both will have the same height. By increasing the width of the print but leaving the height the same, two differing fingerprints result from the same finger, one for fat the other for slender.
but the type of print is unlikely to change, i'm pretty sure. slender or fat, if your print is a whorl it's going to stay a whorl, no?

Hey, they found some unknown dna. @othram is helping! I hope this is the breakthrough they need!

oh boy....crossing my fingers this is actually something and not just random inconsequential previously unknown DNA from like a friend or neighbor that is completely unrelated to the crime.

The sheriff hopes the reward, which could possibly double if other donors come through, will spur tipsters.
“Here’s $25,000,” Sills said, addressing potential informants. “And there’s a possibility there’s another $30,000. And if you want to collect this, now’s the time to give us a call. Because if our DNA research pans out, we won’t need your call.”

The DNA that Sills referred to involved traces of cellular evidence detected on a clothing item that Russell Dermond, 88, had on at the time of his death.

On the morning of May 6, 2014, his decapitated body was found on the floor of his two-car garage in the Great Waters subdivision. It’s believed the killing took place a couple of days prior. The body of his wife, Shirley Dermond, 87, turned up May 16, 2014. It had been weighed down with concrete blocks and dumped in the water 5 miles down the lake.

From that article: But in a one-on-one interview with FBI Special Agent Andy Smith, who has been involved with the Dermond double murder for nine years, told Winne that there are new leads not just on the DNA front, but concerning cellphones too.

BBM. Oooh cellphone evidence! Even more promising!

This is probably the strangest case I've ever followed, and I didn't have much hope because of what I thought were major errors early on. This is incredibly exciting news, as it appears they actually have something to work with. It really didn't seem like they did up until now. I'm just glad the Feds are the ones chasing this down.

I believe the person who did this crime is a serial killer with extremely unusual and violent methods. I also believe he did the Tara Baker crime in Athens and the Katie Janice crime in Atlanta. So this is what I think happened, based on how he would operate. The perp had already surveilled this couple before. Perhaps he saw them because he was frequenting the resort community there. For work or personal reasons. He had a thing for older women. So he chose them. So he had deactivated their security alarm and the cameras at the entrance to the complex the week before. Had already been inside the house. Possibly figured out the boat too. He was well prepared.

It was Friday, evening time, and the husband was already upstairs getting ready for bed. The wife was downstairs reading or doing the crossword puzzle. The perp parks a distance away near lake. He got in a boat that was from a random neighbor that he had already prepared. And made his way towards the house. He got into the house through lock picking. He surprised Shirley at the kitchen table or lv sofa and hit her on the back of the head. She screamed. The husband ran down to try to defend his wife. But he saw he was losing and so the husband ran out of the house. The perp followed him and shot him in the back of the head to prevent him from getting away. He had not planned on this happening. The perp drug the body of the man back into the garage. Putting towels under his head. He then went back to the kitchen and sexually assaulted the half stunned wife. He put her clothes back on after to make it look like he didn't sexually assault her. I think maybe he tied her up. Then he went out to the garage and cut the husband's head off. To hide the bullet forensics. He was already well skilled in chopping off body parts, as he had been fascinated for years already with it. Practicing on animals or more. He took the half conscious woman and made her walk back out to the boat. Perhaps hit her on the head after they climbed into the boat but before the lake. He took the boat back up near his parking spot. Threw the woman overboard. He threw the woman into the lake because he wanted to hide the DNA evidence from the sexual assault. Perhaps he washed his hands and such in the lake too. Changed shirt. Maybe pants too. He got in his car parked near lake and left. He got back home in time late night, his friends or significant others do not notice anything amiss.

Interesting theory but do we know for certain Shirley was sexually assaulted?
No we don't know for certain and perhaps she was not, however I do believe there was a sexual sadistic motive in either murdering Shirley and or sexually assaulting her too. It's similar to the Katie Janis murder at Piedmont Park in 2021. By the way, if it's who I think it is, the police have a lot of explaining to do, because they have been letting this guy get away with murder for years.

And I just heard about this murder for the first time the other day, because of the 10-year anniversary and articles in the media. If I had known about it earlier, I would have called in tips earlier. It was not very well publicized, I don't think.

I would be stunned had she been sexually assaulted. Nothing was ever said to indicate this AFAIK. I mean, Mr D had his head removed and it's never been found and that's bad enough but...for whatever reason, I can't fathom that the perp(s) sexually assaulted her. Can't explain why, and it may sound naive, but that would really cross a line for me.

Tara Baker of Athens, GA
The younger brother was able to express his views < > including the fact that the murder occurred on the eve of her birthday.

“It’s not coincidental,” < > “I don’t think it was a simple home burglary either.” < >

“I hope that whoever he or she is, they are listening,” he said. “After 20 years, I hope this has brought it back to the forefront of their mind and perhaps the minds of people who know something related to those involved.”

Unsolved Homicide: Tara Louise Baker
On January 19, 2001, around 11:20 a.m., the body of Tara Louise Baker was found by Athens-Clarke County firefighters responding to a fire at her apartment located at 160 Fawn Drive, Athens. Subsequent investigation has determined that the fire was intentionally set and the manner of death is homicide. Tara was a first-year law school student at the University of Georgia (UGA)
