MI MI - Cynthia Coon, 13, Ann Arbor, 19 Jan 1970

I have always wondered about the ransom calls regarding Cynthia. Could these have been hoax calls or were they made by someone who really had Cyn at one time or still had her? I remember Amy Billig's poor mom getting hoax calls from multiple people regarding Amy's disappearance.

So, if the calls were real, Cyn could have been alive up to 6 months after she went missing. Why weren't there more calls? Did the caller die? Was there a Stockholm syndrome situation going on? I know a 13-year-old isn't a baby, but it is not that hard to convince a young teen of things- like "You have to stay with me because your family doesn't want you." etc. Was Cyn held in some sort of captivity like Jacie Dugard??

So frustrating that we don't know more about this case and that her family is so quiet about it now. Don't know if they were more involved when it happened, but I suspect so.

Also, I know several children from prominent families who didn't go to the dentist unless there was an issue. Going to the dentist was not a requirement for school attendance as it is now. If Cyn had no dental pain or abnormalities, it would not have been that unusual, for the time, for her not to visit a dentist. Today, we take our children regularly. In the 70's, not so much. Most of my friends in elementary school did not go to the dentist on a regular basis..and I came from an upper-middle-class family and went to private school. I had teeth issues. so I went to the dentist the first time in Kindergarten and I remember being one of the few.

Thought some of you might be interested in the Ann Arbor News coverage at the time of Cynthia's disappearance:

Interesting to note that police discounted foul play because of reports that Cynthia was seen in the Ann Arbor area after she was reported missing.

TO ALL!

I found an obituary for William Warner Coon (her dad)

He died Oct 5 2000

WHAT I THINK IS STRANGE is ...

In this obituary there's nothing mentioned of Cynthia! Normally they would write who is survived by ..... and preceded in death ..... (nothing)

Isn't that strange?

Over the last year I have been in contact with the detective in charge of the UID case from Galloway NJ.

http://doenetwork.org/cases/668ufnj.html

She is aware that Cynthia Coon can be a possible match for the UID and is investigating further.

I think this is not Cynthia. The DNA tests are complete for the Jane Doe and for Cynthia Coon also. They would have compared those two already ...... right? Also the time of death and the clothes don't match up. The sketch doesn't really look like her eather, her nose is very thin on the sketch. This is just my feeling.

Also: This Jane Doe was found along Garden State Parkway. Like Susan Davis and Elizabeth Perry (just 10 miles apart) same killer? (They were killed May 30th 1969 / bodies found: june 2nd 1969)

From 1967 to August 1969, a series of murders were committed in the Ann Arbor, Michigan area. They were known as "The Co-ed Murders". In August of 1969, John Norman Collins was arrested, charged, and subsequently convicted of one of those murders. It was believed that he had committed others. While most of those girls were of College age (18-22), there was at least one young teenager killed as well.

Collins had two roomates, and one of them, Andrew Manuel, accompanied him on a trip to California where another girl was murdered. Manuel returned with Collins to Michigan in July 1969, but immediately returned to California. He was apprehended in Arizona on 6 August 1969 by the FBI. Manuel was not charged with murder, but was given lenient treatment for his testimony against Collins.

Was Manuel, or another accomplice avaiable to abduct Cynthia Coons? Could she be the victim of a "copy cat"?

Recently, another man was convicted of murdering one of the girls who had long been thought to be one of the serial killer's victims. Could he have been involved with the disappearance of Cynthia?

I interviewed John Norman. Happened upon this case as I was doing some research. It's worth taking a look at Jane Mixer's killer, Gary Leiterman.

But what a dreadful, sad history and blight that has been cast on that area during those terrible years.

Collins is a complete dirt bag who has been spending his life in a Michigan Prison on the taxpayer's dime for the past 47 years. He was already incarcerated when Cynthia went missing.

But there were indeed some other killers active in Michigan during that same time frame. In fact, Leiterman has been convicted of killing Jan Mixer, a co-ed who many thought had been a Collins victim.

There were also other young women who were murdered around that time - or who went missing.

Robert Bowman was only recently convicted of murdering another young girl that some had tried to link to Collins. Bowman was such a fiend that he most likely killed many others before and after. The proximity of Cynthia Coon's disappearance to a known body dumping site of Bowman (who lived in Toledo, Ohio at the time) is a strong coincidence which should be considered.

Most likely she is ruled out because they both have DNA profiles, however, the only way to find out is to contact NamUs rep for the UP, because for some reason, they don't publish this Jane Doe's rule out list. Not sure why,

Sure looks like her. Especially the kid pic. I am not going to contact her but it is intriguing.

I wouldn't put anything past RB, but I don't think he's a very likely suspect in this case. As heinous as the murder of Eileen Adams was, she was rolled into a rug and dumped in the open, not buried or carefully concealed. And while it's true that RB dumped her across the State line in Michigan, presumably in order to hinder the investigation, there's no evidence that he sought out victims in MI.

48-years now. Come on folks.

Cynthia is not named but there is a search on going for 4-6 missing girls:
[h=1]Police search for 4 to 6 girls, long-missing, possibly buried in Mich. woods[/h]
MACOMB TOWNSHIP, Mich. — Police are digging in woods northeast of Detroit near where the body of a 13-year-old girl who went missing in 1986 was found more than a decade ago. The Macomb Daily newspaper reports that authorities are digging Tuesday morning in a wooded area of Macomb Township in the hopes of finding the remains of four to six young girls who they believe may be connected to an already-convicted murderer.

WDIV just added Cynthia to the "potential" list.

They're looking for 4-6 girls, there are so many girls/young women from Michigan who went missing during the times this guy was murdering them. Pam Hobley/Patricia Spencer went missing in 1969 a couple hours north of there, to name two. Wow.
I hope investigators find something.

sad to say i think there are more than 4 to 6 girls connected to a SK and if this is his dumping ground i think there will be more than 4 found :crying:
