Ohio: East Palestine Train Derailment, Risk of Explosion

E. Palestine, OH residents want regular testing as urine tests show vinyl chloride by product.

Norfolk Southern told him the chemicals were there due to smoking, using deodorant, etc. There’s no vinyl chloride in deodorant or cigarettes.

I hope all these people have engaged the services of some of the good attorneys offering their services. They should also contact Sen. Sherwood Brown’s office.

From the Ohio Department of Health 2-page fact sheet on vinyl chloride:
Vinyl chloride will travel through your body in your blood. Your liver will break it down into other chemicals, some of which can be more harmful than the vinyl chloride itself. Some of these new chemicals can be stored in your body for a long time.

@ErinBrockovich tells @EVargasTV the lack of clarity on who approved the burn is concerning. “Somebody’s lying,” she says, “or you’re watching a coverup happen … in real time.

Well, it was Governor DeWine. Captain of the ship and all that. He announced it to the news media back then. No one else in OH government would have that authority. Here he is announcing the decision.

Here's his press release:

(EAST PALESTINE, Ohio)— Following new modeling information conducted this morning by the Ohio National Guard and U.S. Department of Defense, Ohio Governor Mike DeWine and Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro are ordering an immediate evacuation in a one-mile by two-mile area surrounding East Palestine which includes parts of both Ohio and Pennsylvania.

I recall hearing this and wondering why they didn't consult with EPA or other environmental experts on the potential hazards to environment and health. Ohio NG and DoD are not the experts on that.

Why is Erin Brockovich stating that the decision-maker is not known? She needs to read the governor's press release.

Re-read and reviewed video, and unable to confirm EB stating the aforementioned. I commend both EV and EB advocating for the people of East Palestine, OH. Moo

She's quoted as saying there's no clarity on who approved the burn. The links show that Gov. DeWine approved the burn.

It's confusing. Is she trying to say the governor wasn't responsible? He's the one in charge. He's the one who has all the experts at his disposal. He chose his experts, listened to their feedback and made the decision to blow the whole thing up. He can't escape that responsibility.

If DeWine chose not to use experts from the EPA who may have given different advice, that's his responsibility. The buck stops with him. He had all the resources and experts he needed at his disposal. He's a former Ohio AG and prosecutor. He served a few terms in the US Senate. He knows how investigations are supposed to be done.

Are he and other top government and corporate officials going to try to dodge responsibility? Very likely. If so, Erin had better find federal charges because DeWine controls the courts in Ohio. His own son serves on the Ohio Supreme Court.

Erin had also better keep relying on the national news media to get the story out. Ohio news media always covers up Ohio controversies when it comes to certain state government officials.

DeWine said in a letter to Biden that "no unmet needs have been reported" to the state, but there was a possibility that rail operator Norfolk Southern could cease providing its voluntary support at some point.

  • A disaster declaration "is needed to ensure that the state and federal government use all resources available to step in and provide the community with needed assistance," DeWine said.
  • "Because of the unique nature of this incident, the state is still working to identify current needs and evaluate the future impacts this disaster will have on individuals and the community," he added.
  • "I have determined that this incident is of such severity and magnitude that effective response is beyond the capabilities of the State and the affected local governments, and that supplementary federal assistance is necessary."

Interesting. Gov. DeWine refused to ask the WH for assistance when the disaster first occurred.

Many articles linked here, though, haven't read them all.

There are very powerful interests lobbying to relax oversight, safety laws, etc. JMO, some of the leaders in DC who broker public policy in this area have changed, with newer people pushing harder to cut regulations replacing older, experienced experts who know when safety is being compromised.

A full year after 38 freight cars derailed in East Palestine, Ohio, the crash site is still under active construction.

Compactors rumble by, smoothing the soil. Silver and green tanker trucks line up to suck up and carry off water discharge. Drones buzz overhead, surveying the work.

It's the final stage of a massive environmental cleanup that has already cost Norfolk Southern more than $800 million.

On Feb. 3, 2023 the derailed cars triggered a massive fire, belching toxic smoke into the air far above East Palestine. Twenty of the cars contained hazardous materials, including vinyl chloride, which was later set on fire in a controlled burn to prevent a larger explosion.

It will be interesting reading. Hopefully, DeWine won't have any influence over the conclusion.

My .02 - Overheated roller bearing in a wheel. Hot box detectors were dialed down to almost zero, to prevent having to stop trains for false alarms. The train continued too long after the bearings overheated, wheel and axle failed, etc.

All of this happening on an extremely long train made up primarily of cars containing HazMat is beyond comprehension. It's begging for a major disaster to happen. I hope they don't try to blame it on the train crew. IIRC, there were only 2 guys on the entire train, both in the cab. How can you expect someone to look back and visually detect a hot box on a train that's 2 miles long? It was also impossible to safely stop a 149 car train traveling at 60-80 mph once the crew finally received the alarm. When the hot box detector did finally trigger an alarm, most of the car was in flames.

There's also no way one person doing a visual inspection of the axles on every car of a huge train will see lubricant on an axle. You can still have a hot box without seeing that in advance.
Also likely they found other safety issues. This was all 100% preventable. JMO

DARLINGTON TOWNSHIP, Pa. (KDKA) -- Ahead of President Joe Biden's visit to East Palestine, Ohio, Pennsylvania says it has found no evidence that the toxic train derailment near the border contaminated the state's water or soil.

After a year of sampling conducted by the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection and its independent contractor, the state says they've found no evidence of contamination to private water wells, surface water or soil.

"DEP's response to the Norfolk Southern train derailment started just over a year ago, and we continue to be on the ground in Beaver and Lawrence counties supporting local communities," DEP Interim Acting Secretary Jessica Shirley said in a news release. "DEP will continue to work with local partners and its independent contractor to uphold Pennsylvanians' right to clean air, pure water, and the preservation of natural resources."
