Search for missing Old Forge businessman continues

OLD FORGE — Nearly 16 months after Old Forge restaurateur Robert Baron disappeared, police activity in the borough Wednesday suggests a wider probe.

Lackawanna County detectives and Old Forge police returned to Ghigiarelli’s restaurant to do some “additional investigatory work” on the Baron case, said Daniel P. Pillets Jr., senior trial counsel at the district attorney’s office.

“That’s essentially all I can tell you,” said Pillets, who was with the investigators.

At several locations throughout Old Forge, investigators took photographs and marked the street with spray paint. These places included the 400 block of Sussex Street, where a yellow “T” was spray painted on the street in front 401 Sussex St., the apartment building where Baron’s son, Bobby, lives. They pulled over on the side of Coxton Road, near Saint Johns Creek, and peered out into a field on the north side.

Detective Chris Kolcharno photographed behind the UPS Store on South Main Street and the front of 3 Foundry St.

Investigators declined to discuss Wednesday’s investigation. Attempts to reach Lackawanna County District Attorney Mark Powell and Old Forge Police Chief Jason Dubernas were unsuccessful.

A Scranton company that says it is owed more than $94,000 by missing Old Forge businessman Robert Baron filed a lawsuit in Lackawanna County Court to recover the money.

Fullers Construction LLC, 2710 Lafayette St., contends it had an agreement to provide construction, labor and materials for a property Baron owned in Jenkins Twp. but the company received only partial payment before he disappeared.

Robert Baron’s disappearance remains under investigation.

Family still searching for answers three years after restaurant owner goes missing
The streets of Old Forge are quiet now, but three years ago the scene in front of Ghigiarelli’s was much different.

[...]

“It’s worse now to me than the day it happened. It just keeps getting worse as time goes on. As far as I’m concerned all our lives are ruined. I mean, just him not being present, nobody, nobody deserves this,” MB said.

Baron’s daughter BB says she’s very angry and frustrated at the pace of the investigation.

“Nothing was handled right from the start. There could have been so much evidence found there if they handled it correctly,” BB said.

[...]

The Baron family says the investigation is still underway and they’re still looking for answers. They hope someone will speak up with information soon.

A $10,000 reward is still being offered to anyone with information on Robert Baron’s disappearance.

Details of Disappearance
Baron was last seen in Old Forge, Pennsylvania at 10:00 p.m. on January 25, 2017. After leaving his pizza restaurant, Ghigiarelli's, he dropped off his son at his apartment in town. His son worked with him, and both daughters lived away from home.

Baron didn't return home that night, and his wife assumed he'd spent the night at the apartment above Ghigiarelli's. He often stayed there overnight so he could accept delivery of pizza dough, which arrived at 7:00 a.m. each day. He was supposed to pick up his son the next morning, but never arrived at his son's apartment, and didn't respond to calls and texts. When his son went to the restaurant, he found the pizza dough delivery sitting outside untouched, which is uncharacteristic of Baron's behavior.

Investigators later found evidence of a violent struggle inside the restaurant, including bloodstains, along with indications that someone had tried to clean up with household cleaners. Baron's car, which had bloodstains on the interior, turned up a few days later on Howard Street, less than a mile away. The blood was determined to be Baron's and the amount was said to be "significant"; a tooth in the restaurant's utility sink was also Baron's.

Although the restaurant was a cash business, his family doesn't think he could have been carrying more than a few hundred dollars on the night of his disappearance. His loved ones believe he was killed at Ghigiarelli's in a botched robbery and that several people were involved, but the police haven't named any suspects in his disappearance.

He's considered missing under suspicious circumstances and his case remains unsolved. Ghigiarelli's has never been reopened.

This occurred in a tiny town of 8000 people where everyone knows everyone else and their "business". If Bob disappeared after dropping his son off at 10 pm, whatever likely happened to Robert didn't occur late at night when everyone was asleep. Someone must have seen something. A $10,000 reward in a poor town goes a long way. I'd have thought someone would have collected that reward by now.

Was there a witness besides the son to Robert dropping his son off at his son's residence? There are some interesting comments on the Finding Robert Baron FB page.

I read on the FB page that there was DNA found. With forensic genetic genealogy, perhaps this terrible crime can be solved or at least the well known town criminals ruled out.

Oh my gosh! The Barons shared surveillance video they found over a year ago and gave to LE. It is shown at the link above.

From the article:

[...]

The video was taken two blocks from the pizza place on Main Street in Old Forge during the time it is believed that Robert Baron went missing.

The first clip shows a man in shorts walking near Main Street just after midnight on January 26. The Barons said this man matches the description of a man that a witness saw outside of Ghigiarelli's less than an hour earlier.

The next video clip shows a man holding a lit cigarette and pulling a rolling suitcase behind him. At the same time, the first man comes back the way he came.

The Barons are interested in the suitcase seen in the video since they say a similar one was stored in an apartment above Ghigiarelli's.

This family also has some suspects in mind.

“I have someone in mind, however I don’t feel the person would be out to do something like this. Not to take it this far,” Nicole said.

The Lackawanna County District Attorney’s office is leading the investigation, along with Old Forge Police.

The D.A. Mark Powell told the I-Team: “This is not a cold case. It is very active. We are following leads and will get to the truth of what happened to Mr. Baron. We can’t say much more so as not to jeopardize the ongoing investigation. We continue to investigate the violent disappearance and likely homicide of Robert Baron.”

Robert Baron from Old Forge went missing exactly five years ago. | wnep.com
The last break in the case was a year ago; Baron's family shared surveillance video they tracked down and passed along to investigators.

The video showed people who the Barons believed had information on what happened to Robert.

Nothing came from the video, and nothing new has come since then.
