Hello. This is my first post. I’ve been following this case since the beginning. I don’t have much to add but wanted to mention that I have an iPhone and apple watch and if my phone battery dies, my watch does not function the same because it has to connect via Bluetooth to my phone. I do not think his Apple Watch necessarily died at the same time as his phone, it’s just it can’t be tracked when not connected to Bluetooth on the phone. I hope Riley is found soon. I’m a mom and am so sad following this case.
Welcome!
My Apple Watch can be used without my phone anywhere near it is a cellular model.
It has its own phone number (it’s really just for billing and tracking purposes only; and it does not require a Bluetooth connection to my iPhone for calls, texts, etc.
I don’t know if Riley’s was like that, though.

You’re saying the bar personnel sent a friend with him? I haven’t heard that at all. I gathered that the friend walked with him voluntarily, then went back inside.

I was referencing the responsibility on the part of the bar. Similar to, don’t let anyone drive drunk. This same legal issue also has come up when someone is drunk at a residence.
The fact is, they kicked him out of the bar and he was all alone, afoot trying to find his way to his hotel. He had no clue. And we see what happened.
One of his fraternity friends went down the steps with him when he was escorted out. Friend could have left with him, but chose to stay and return to the others. That information has been disclosed previously. You may perhaps recall that they initially tried to say the establishment didn't let said friend leave with him, however, it later came out that was not true. You can find plenty talk about this well upthread, with sources.

Right. Except how could the establishment stop a friend from leaving with him? They couldn’t. That was a choice on the part of the friend.

Maybe you missed my point….., the bar kicked him out onto the streets alone, even though they…… according to them…… knew he was mentally incapacitated .
It’s a bar. They carry legal liability. No' it’s not easy like it was back in the ‘80’s, but it is what it is. Lawyers, and all that. I have no idea what the laws are in Nashville, and no, IANAL.

IMO: With Riley’s phone and Apple watch dying at the same time, his being found alive is slim.

The high-scale bar/restaurant may not be liable for removing Riley from the bar, it would have been a responsible gesture to hire a ride-share to get him safely to his hotel. It would also have been great for the restaurant’s image.
I would have liked the bar’s “enforcer” to say to Riley’s group, this man needs to leave, which one or two of you are willing to go with him to make sure he gets home? OMO.

Calling a ride share is a great idea in concept but there is potential liability for the bar and possible risk for Riley’s safety with that solution, too. I’m sure we have all heard of crimes committed by imposter drivers and an occasional nefarious driver.

Sadly, I think the best option would have been help from a few of the “(frat) brothers.” MOO.

The narrative initially was the bar ejected him by himself, and wouldn’t let his friends go with him.

We learned later that a friend was right there, and for whatever reason, decided to let Riley walk home alone. If I was inclined to assign responsibility to anyone other Riley here, that’s where I’d start.

Friends look after friends, and bars look after their patrons and their own legal interests by removing unruly people who present a problem.

It likely happened multiple times that night at that very bar, and multiple times more at nearby bars.

In my not so limited experience, I never had an Uber called for me, and I wouldn’t have expected it.

My friends were always there though…

Right… and it’s been said that body of water is full of debris. Trees, rocks, construction debris, and more. A body could be snagged on something. I do hope the Cajun Navy has sonar or divers. I think they’ve already sent divers down but the water looks so muddy it seems like it would be very difficult to find anything.
The water is very murky. There has already been sonar equipment AND divers on the water but they are continuing to methodically search the water.

Was there enough time between the policeman seeing him and the life 360 not active, for him to make it to the water?
It is so strange how he seemed to disappear after speaking to the LE officer. The loss of boot sounds indicates he left the sidewalk. He's not on the video when it pans back in that direction. Did he make a right-hand turn into the trees?

Hey Everyone,
Be sure and join us tonight at 10:30 PM Eastern as we get into the latest in Riley Strain's case, the Delphi case and more.
Every night on Websleuths YouTube LIve, we read the opening arguments in the Scott Peterson case. It's good to remind people of the court case against Scott Peterson.

So he was on his own, no liability on the part of the bar.
I guess that’s how it is then. I Haven’t heard any reports that he was violent or threatening in the bar.
Just seems wrong to not care for someone when they’re in that state and potentially a danger to themselves.

They’d be liable if they allowed him to stay, but not for making him leave.

They did everything by the book, as far as we know, and even that family friend seems to concede that something went on and the bar made the decision based on whatever that was.

The city could always pass some sort of ordnance or put in place some sort of program where drunk people are taken home, but I don’t know what that would look like.

Especially when you’re talking about a mega bar where people are going to be forced to leave quite frequently.

You’re right! We don’t know what model he had.

I think his friends have more responsibility, although I don't blame them

We dont know if he was alone.

Bar statement says that he was asked to leave because of his behaviour.

That is their decisión and right

Welcome to WS. Insightful post!

I want to add that my Apple Watch senses if I have a fall. If I don’t react, it will contact 911 in 60 secs. — I have to respond on the watch. I’ve wondered when Riley took that spill why his watch didn’t make the EMS notification. (Answering my own question, perhaps Riley had the presence of mind to act, or maybe he had that feature turned off in his settings.)

So sad this Apple feature didn’t provide a safety net for him, for whatever reason. My heart is heavy. Prayers for him and those who love him.
