One dead, 13 injured after stolen 18-wheeler crashed into Texas DPS office in Brenham, officials say

DPS said the man behind the wheel drove the 18-wheeler into the Brenham office after he was denied a CDL renewal the day before.

Snipped:

When law enforcement spotted the stolen big rig, they tried to get Parker to stop but he took off, heading westbound on Highway 290. He made a U-turn and started traveling east on the Highway 290 service road before taking a hard right turn and driving right through the front door of the Texas DPS office, Reese said. That's where the waiting area and the driver's license front desks are.

At one point, Parker drove the big rig out of the DPS office and had intentions of crashing through the building again, but he was quickly taken out of the driver's seat by law enforcement and put in handcuffs, Reese said. He's in the custody of the Washington County Sheriff's Office.

Cecilia and I are saddened to hear of the tragic incident at the Texas Department of Public Safety office in Brenham.
Join us in praying for the Texan who passed, those injured, and their loved ones.
I thank first responders for their swift response.
Texas will bring this heinous criminal to justice.

I was hesitant to post this from FOX. Lots of speculation by the reporters. Hopefully, they were at the Press Conference later in the afternoon (in Brenham, TX) and got the facts!

"Being in the wrong place at the wrong time" is stated by one of the reporters. Wow! Did not have to state that.

Also, they state that Brenham is very much rural. That is very incorrect. The lady reporter states the DPS office is in downtown Brenham. That is very incorrect.

A reporter states what questions he would ask! The Texas Rangers are the lead investigators in this tragic incident. They are the best of the best. That reporter can be assured they are brilliant and will ask the appropriate questions.

Texas Rangers will be handling the investigation.

The Texas Department of Public Safety is a sprawling agency and one of the largest state law enforcement operations in the country. It includes troopers who are a central part of a massive border security operation on the U.S.-Mexico border as well as the Texas Rangers, the state's top criminal investigators. But the department also has offices across the state that issue driver's licenses.

Please disregard the comment about the deceased victim being 90 years old, etc. This was reported incorrectly.

Today, Monday, 4/15/24,
per several news media, they are now reporting that the victim is a 78 year old man per the Texas Department of Public Safety.

I will post the following from a Houston, Texas TV station.

2 remain in critical condition days after big rig slams into Brenham Driver's License Office

Snipped:
Two people remain hospitalized in critical condition after a man drove an 18-wheeler truck into a Department of Public Safety Driver's License Office in Brenham on Friday.

Bobby Huff died in that crash, and his wife said the 78-year-old drove 34 miles to Brenham from Giddings to renew his license.

Per Texas DPS (Department of Public Safety) Sgt. Justin Ruiz, this case remains an active and ongoing investigation by the Texas Rangers.

Clenard Parker remains in the Washington County Jail - Brenham, Texas. At this time, his bond totals 2 million dollars.

In my opinion, there will probably be additional charges filed against Parker. Just my opinion.

SUSPECT IN BRENHAM DPS OFFICE ATTACK NOW CHARGED WITH MURDER

This article is a week old but it gives an insight into the mental health side of Clenard Parker.

Texas DPS officials said this happened just a day after Parker went to the same office and was told he was not eligible to renew his commercial driver's license.

"And from that, he just couldn't," said Parker's cousin James Edmond. "He was angry that he failed that test, but for whatever reason, he just snapped."

We asked several of Parker's family members if he had been violent in the past and they all said no, but they did say he is on medication for serious mental health issues.

"We have documents that show that he suffered from mental illness and he really needs some help," Edmond said.

Though he has mental health issues, his family said they never saw this coming.

Do we know if this DPS office had any sort of preventative bollards at the entrance of the building? I know it's an after thought now but would steel bollards stop a big rig?

ETA after looking around it appears they can. Surprisingly affordable.

Eli9, there are no bollards at the Texas Department of Public Safety Building in Brenham, Washington County, TX. I am familiar with this building.

It is handicapped accessible with a slightly angled (sloped) short ramp which can be used by those in a wheel chair, etc.

I tried to copy the picture of the front of this building but the site would only let me copy the link to the picture.
So . . . click on this Link and you will see a smaller pic and an enlarged pic.
