Fulbright indicted on murder charge in Clay County toddler's death

A man accused of severely beating a toddler who later died has been indicted on a murder charge, according to court documents.

Joshua Thomas Fulbright, 26, was free Thursday from Clay County Jail on a $50,000 bond, according to court and jail records.

An attempt to try Fulbright on the injury to a child charge ended in a mistrial Dec. 6, 2019, because a jury could not be seated after attorneys questioned a group of 80 potential jurors, according to court documents.

A change of venue was granted, and Fulbright's murder trial will be at the Montague County Courthouse, possibly later this year.

Fulbright's bail conditions include wearing a GPS ankle monitor and having no contact with co-defendant Sarah Elizabeth Newsom, 26, court documents show.

Sarah is also charged with felony injury to a child, according to court records.

She was free Thursday from Clay County Jail on a $50,000 bond, according to jail and court records.



Am I missing something here - he is out on bond with a murder charge?? And this is Texas? I had him already out on bond on 12/23/19. Didn't know about Newsom being out though. I had her bond at $500K - does that mean she came up with the 10% of $50K??!!

Unfortunately they don't have a court site where you can look up their cases, just a calendar - and I have them both on my "look-up-every-day/week" list.

This is sickening. Unbelievable he is out. That poor little girl deserves justice.

I'm somewhat local and there is not anything I can find other than this link.
Shows that Fulbright was indicted for Murder and court granted a change of venue to another county not far from Clay County, TX.
Ridiculous that it has been almost 4 years and AFAIK these two are still out on bail living freely amongst us.

That is somewhat a very old article. Last was - they both had announcement hearings on 3/21/22 & yes, they will be tried in Montague County.
I have them on my "to look up every-day/week list" and nothing has come up since March.

An Announcement hearing is usually where they change their plea - so don't know "what" happened at that hearing.
 
This case is on my "weekly look up sheets" - and after Aug. 5 they stopped updating their court web site - but! Finally an article on the case. And it looks like they started on 8/17/22.

A total of 350 potential jurors have been called for consideration in the Joshua Fulbright murder trial set to begin next week in 97th District Court at Montague.
The 26-year-old Fulbright is accused of severely beating two-year-old Scarlette Olivia Newsom on Oct. 11, 2018. The toddler later died from her injuries.

Wondering what happened to the mother - Newsom. Anyone find anything on her - did she finally plead guilty? They usually had court hearings together. But the article doesn't mention her.

@Niner good morning! I'm so glad to see you posted about this upcoming trial for J Fulbright. I can't believe that there is no coverage in any of the larger MSM or discussion of the mother of the babygirl Scarlette Olivia Newsom.

Prosecutors called the toddler’s mother, Sarah Newsom to the stand today in the trial of her former fiancé, 26-year-old Joshua Fulbright.

Newsom is charged with injury to a child, and it is not known if her testimony will be a factor in her case.
