VA VA - Robert Hourihan, 33, Columbia, 8 April 2011

I didn't know why he dressed for work though. Did he get called in for some reason? That was what kept me from thinking murder. I guess if somebody knew what happened to wifey, it would clear some things for me. I thought at first based on the wife telling about how she loved him for 15 years etc, and thought he may have had some issues she was unaware of. Maybe they found a suicide note in the car and never found him. I saw David Wayne Hultberg's case on here, and it reminded me of my thoughts about Robert when it happened. His car was found a long way from his body, but ruled a suicide. Odd.

The only reasons I can come up with for him dressing for work even though he had the day off, is that he was going somewhere 'work related' and wanted to look somewhat official. OR maybe he just didn't want his wife to know where he was going.

Possible reasons the friend called the wife immediately on seeing Robert -

- the friend knew there were some kind of issues in the marriage.
- the friend knew he was supposed to be somewhere else
- he wasn't alone
- he was somewhere the friend KNEW he shouldn't be --eg If he had a known gambling problem then spotting him near a casino/gambling place would cause concern. Of course I in no way, am saying that I think Robert had a gambling problem, just using it as an example.
-maybe he was only allowed to drive 'her' car if he went straight to work and home.

Was it a normal thing for him to have a weekday off? Did he request the day off or was it rostered off? If he asked for it, I wonder what he told his employer.

I'm fairly new to Websleuths and was drawn to this thread since I too live in the Charlottesville area and remember the news stories about Robert. I'm one of apparently a few people who do, though. Compared to some other missing persons stories in my area from the last few years -- Morgan Harrington, Alexis Murphy, Dashad (Sage) Smith -- the Hourihan story has received sparse coverage. The families of the other missing people have passed out flyers, organized searches and vigils and pushed to keep their loved one's name in the news and on people's minds. When I mentioned this case to my co-workers, none of them remembered it.

I have to wonder if there are people in my area who know something, saw something, but because of the relative lack of publicity, don't even know it's significant.

I also got directions from Columbia to La Plata, and they started with going east to Richmond to pick up I-95. Does anyone know how long he and his wife had lived in the area or how comfortable he was with Charlottesville? It seems like if he lived in Fluvanna and worked in Richmond, he might not be too familiar with Cville, which makes it even odder that his car was seen at the 5th Street exit.

5th Street is one exit for downtown Cville, but not the fastest/most direct one if you're coming from the east. Other than that, there's not much near the exit...some apartments/townhouses, a couple of gas stations and fast food places, a Holiday Inn and the Albemarle County Police Department.

Finally, I'm struck by the reports that he regularly stopped by the E.W. Thomas grocery store to get breakfast on his way to work in Richmond. If he truly lived in or near Columbia, which is a tiny, tiny town, going to Palmyra on his way to Richmond would require some serious backtracking. I also mapped this and compared the routes with and without the stop, and going to the store would add more than 20 minutes to his trip. I know people are loyal to this grocery store, I've been there, but it seems really odd that he'd go that far out of his way before work on a regular basis.

Fluvanna County Sheriff's Office Press Release at link

CBS19, another Charlottesville-area station, also posted the release: http://www.newsplex.com/home/headli...urihan-Disappeared-3-Years-Ago-254406671.html

And the Fluvanna Review: http://www.fluvannareview.com/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=5635:hourihan&catid=81

I wonder if any of them tried to contact his wife? I think it's very sad that this is the only news coverage he's gotten in a year, and the stories are just re-prints of press releases.

For some reason I started thinking about this case today. I wonder what happened to Robert?

Fluvanna Missing Man Search Hits Milestone

We’re approaching the fourth anniversary of a Fluvanna County missing persons case. The Fluvanna Sheriff’s Office has been searching for Robert Lee Hourihan since April 8th, 2011.

Hourihan (photo courtesy of the Fluvanna County Sheriff’s Office) was expected to have a meeting with Daniel Fennel of Palmyra that morning, but Fennel says Hourihan never showed up. The Hourihan family vehicle was found in late May 2011 in the parking lot of a Target store near Route 301 in Maryland. The missing man’s family in Fluvanna includes his wife, daughter, brother, and parents, and they want to know what happened to him.
If you have additional information, call Lieutenant David Wells of the Fluvanna Sheriff’s Office at 589-8211.

Rob's friend JK posted that Rob had plans to go to New York with a man named Danny.

I'm not so sure the wife is involved here. I doubt the 'happy marriage' story but rather than her being directly involved in Rob's disappearance, I think TH found a solution to her problem. This would explain her apparent lack of concern.

:moo::moo:

Re the facebook page for Robert. I found it yesterday.'Please help find Tara Colley's husband (Robert Lee Hourihan).'

Well that must be information that the Va investigators wanted to keep quite because I cannot picture this guy posting it if he had not already said it before .

There is. I wish I could say what it is, but I can't. And it's not what JK posted, although it would be connected if what he says is true. Sorry to be so vague...

IMHO, his disappearance is drug related.

It is okay, I will just sit and wonder even more than I already do!LOL

Lt. David R. Wells of the Fluvanna County Sheriff's Office:
The main thing is to help [his wife] Tara at this point. Give her some sort of closure, something to help her get by – if we could find the body it would be best both for physical evidence purposes and for them – we might never be able to prove what happened or who did it, but at least they wouldn’t have to wonder."

This is the first article I can recall that uses the word "body," suggesting LE believes he's dead. Up until now, I'd always assumed there was a fair chance he could have started a new life somewhere.

Why would he have led his wife to believe he was going to work when he was planning to meet up with an acquaintance instead? I guess LE knows a lot more than they're saying.

Cvill,

If the car took I64 to route 208 then followed 208 to route 1 ,he could hit 17 and follow that to 301 into laplata. He could hit 64 from 15 the trip would take a about 2 hours 18 minutes. It is quicker to go to Richmond and hit 95 unless there is traffic and Richmond is is unpredictable ,but Northern VA is awful at many points during the morning and day.Plus it is the route less traveled so if you didnt want to risk being spotted, it is a great option.

My question has always been: If it was a weekday, WHY was he not expected at work? Makes no sense.
