US diplomat's wife was driving on the wrong side of the road before her fatal UK crash, police say

Harry Dunn death: Parents 'trapped in nightmare' amid growing calls to waive suspect's diplomatic immunity

She had been in the UK for just three weeks when she careered into Mr Dunn on the brow of a hill near RAF Croughton in Northamptonshire on August 27.

Her 12-year-old son was in the passenger seat, the Telegraph understands.

In the immediate aftermath, sources suggest, she immediately got out of the car and admitted liability.

But the following day, when police visited her home at Croughton, which is being used as a US intelligence base, to inform her the teenager had died in hospital, lawyers and embassy officials stepped in.

Incredible that diplomatic immunity should cover something like this. To kill a child, admit culpability and then blow the country, and there's no recourse? WTH hasn't she been named and shamed at least?

they need to waive diplomatic immunity
it shouldn't exist to begin with IMO

I think it exists to protect each nation's employees from, well, a coup.

Shouldn't be used here. She can have legal representation! If she lived in Great Britain just 3 weeks, let a jury decide about her "rookie driving mistake" and the penalty. Bring over her US driving record, likely 25 years without killing a motorcyclist.

Let this rider's family have their day in court for their son!

JMHO IMOO MOO YMMV

It's possible the woman claimed to police that she had diplomatic immunity, but her husband's job possibly isn't quite to that level.

I've done a little searching on the person who was named in a news article and its possible.

One of the online sources of background info shows her with an arrest record in the US. If so, it could explain her behavior. JMO

is that the one named in the post above yours?

"The wife of a US diplomat who fatally hit a British teenager and left the country is Anne Sacoolas, Sky News can reveal.

Mrs Sacoolas, 42, has claimed diplomatic immunity and left the UK for America after 19-year-old Harry Dunn was killed in a head-on collision while riding his motorbike.

Sky News is naming her after earlier revealing a deal gives diplomats and their families at the US spy base (Northamptonshire's Croughton Airbase) diplomatic immunity. Immunity usually only covers those diplomats and their dependents based in London. However, Sky News has been told a special arrangement has been in place as early as 1994 for this particular base."

I hit a cookie wall at the link
anything interesting besides her name?

Sounds like she's in hiding in the US

"The US embassy has confirmed to Sky News that the woman has left the UK.

It is understood that someone on the American side told the family to go back to the US.

A spokesperson said: "This kind of case receives intense attention at senior levels and every case is considered carefully given the global impact such decisions carry."

Cabinet minister Robert Jenrick told Sky News that Foreign Secretary Dominic Raab had spoken to the US ambassador and "made clear our disappointment that the woman involved in this incident has left the UK using diplomatic immunity".

Sky News has tried to contact Mrs Sacoolas for comment but was unable to do so as she has not returned to her original address in the US."

According to the DM, the fatal accident happened outside RAF Croughton, which is leased by the US military. Perhaps that is where her husband works.

Current US Ambassador to the UK is Robert Wood Johnson III, another billionaire buddy. Doubt he will be of much help to the victim's family, JMO. He's been involved in some possibly illegal activities himself so perhaps has a soft spot for fellow scofflaws.

Woody Johnson - Wikipedia

A Senate report said that Johnson, along with others, was able to buy, for relatively small fees, roughly $2 billion in capital losses that they used to erase taxable gains they garnered from stock sales. The U.S. Treasury lost an estimated $300 million in revenue as a result. In a statement, Johnson said he had been advised by his lawyers in 2000 that the transaction "was consistent with the Tax Code." After the Internal Revenue Service challenged that view in 2003, Johnson in 2006 settled with the IRS and agreed to pay 100 percent of the tax due plus interest.[9]

DM also reports that Woody turned down the waiver request because the woman perp's husband is a spy for the US.

US diplomat's wife, 42, who 'ran over and killed' British teen is named | Daily Mail Online

Usually, immunity only covers diplomats and families based in London. However, a special deal is in place which gives it to diplomats and relatives based at RAF Croughton. American officials are said to have turned down the waiver request in Harry Dunn’s case because the suspect’s husband is a spy and they want to protect his identity.

It is understood US authorities told the accused woman to get on a plane. In the past, the Foreign Office has expelled diplomats suspected of serious crimes.

It seems the British government decided to "out" the perp and, by extension her husband too. Can't blame them for wanting to get both of them out of the country.

US fatal crash suspect cannot ‘hide behind’ diplomatic immunity

The chairman of the Foreign Affairs Select Committee has said the wife of a US diplomat who is a suspect in a fatal road crash should return to the UK to face questions.

“The US is very, very tough in protecting its diplomats and this one of those moments where, though legally they are correct, just because they can doesn’t mean they should.

“This is clearly an incident of policing this isn’t some attempt by some dodgy dictatorship to bully a diplomat, which is why these protections are put in place.”

Folks have taken to Twitter with her hashtag to express their outrage

Do we normally admit where “spy bases” exist and what does one have to do within the US government in order to claim diplomatic immunity? They’re kids go to a super pricey school, so it’s a well paid position I’m assume.

The spy's/intel agent's wife admitted liability and agreed to cooperate. The State Department and the US Embassy then stepped in and took her home.

The boy's family believe she was coerced to leave the UK.

This incident was unrelated to her husband's 'diplomatic' work and therefore immunity can be waived.

Hadn't read that she was "forced" to leave the UK. Is there a link? TIA
