Moo..flat/straight tipped shovels are also used to mix sand into concrete mix... could use it to move wet mud also..moo
Oh, another great idea for the use of the flat spade to go with moving rocks or sand is mixing concrete or moving wet mud. TY. I pray someone remembers seeing the 52yo male wearing those clothes.

To anyone: What precisely does the people of NZ mean when they use the word "new"?

This spade has been described as new so I was wondering if it was purchased new but used by the killer at some point. If so, in the states, we'd likely say the spade was purchased new as not to mislead the public into thinking if they found a spade that it may not be the right one if it was dirty and/or scratched.

Does NZ have a legal reason for charging the 52yo man at this particular time? In the states, people may only be held for a certain amount of time in jail, no more than 72 hours is typical, unless charges are filed by the Prosecutor or as in this case, the Crown.

There will be a 12-member jury panel when there is a trial.

I'm not familiar with different types of spades so those are interesting points made by @nao, thank you

The description of spade being new just means that it was recently bought and although it was likely used by the killer...if found it'll still look new

The accused had already been charged with kidnapping Yanfei as LE were certain it was he who caused her to be missing. Recently, after examining Trevor St house they concluded she'd been killed. So he was already on remand awaiting trial when they upgraded charge to murder.

I guess they may have a reason to lay the murder charge now....perhaps they thought that confirming it to him might induce a confession but we don't know

NZ has population equal to Colorado so a case like this makes headline news. I can only think that whilst LE ask for help in finding items of interest they won't go into more detail so as not to prejudice a fair trial. Jury trial same as US and in selection they have to find 12 people who've not already made their minds up...not so easy when it makes headline news for weeks

Yesterday's Court Appearance + clarification of name suppression...

When discussing the matter of name suppression, the man’s lawyer said: “At this stage, we simply do not know enough. This man has no ability to understand English nor can he read English.”

He said the media had reported on the incident nearly every day and naming his client at this stage could be “prejudicial”.

Judge Phillips accepted the case was “high profile” and acknowledged the role media play in reporting on court matters, but granted the man interim name suppression until his next court appearance and declined media applications to take photos of the defendant.

The defendant faced the judge throughout proceedings, nodding every so often as his interpreter translated what was being said.

The man appeared in the Christchurch District Court this afternoon before Judge Kevin Phillips.

A charging document in court alleges that the man murdered Bao on July 19.

Court security reserved 10 seats in the public gallery for Bao’s family to witness proceedings today.

Wearing orange prison attire, the man appeared from custody in the dock with the assistance of an interpreter.

Crown prosecutor Courtney Martyn began by acknowledging Bao’s family in court.

Through a defence lawyer, the man entered a plea of not guilty to the charge of murder, as well as denying the charge of kidnapping.

Judge Phillips remanded him in custody to appear at the High Court at Christchurch on September 1.

NZ = Colorado in size. It places the importance of protecting the integrity of the Investigation into perspective.

There was a no-body conviction in NZ years ago and one in AU, too. It shouldn't hinder a conviction when the circumstantial evidence is strong. Currently, LE is searching where his cellphone data tells them he has been. The clothing and tools they're seeking must have been discarded on or about the 19th. Or thru the 21st? Ugh. The timeline is bugs.

May I also issue a warning since the alleged killer doesn't speak English; he's all Mandarin. Hence, he may file motions all the way to the Supreme Court of the Land by saying he didn't understand his rights, or whatnot, over the language barrier. Don't believe him. It is a ploy that he must give up. It will prove exhausting for him if he chooses this narrow path.

We want Ms Yanfie Bao. He should confess if he seeks mercy from the Crown.

Police are searching for Yanfei Bao at a farm property where a pond has been drained, near the same area investigators visited two weeks ago.

Detective Inspector Nicola Reeves confirmed search teams were on a property between Hudson’s and Davidson’s Rd, in Greenpark, 30 minutes south of Christchurch, on Friday morning.

Fire engines are also on site at the farm.

Police are back in the area they were seen searching two weeks ago.

Reeves confirmed a pond had been drained on the property, but said it had not been drained by Fire and Emergency Services.

The search for Bao had previously been paused while police prepared to search “further areas of interest”, but it appears to have intensified around the Greenpark area.

A community safety meeting was held in Christchurch today amid increased unease in the aftermath of Yanfei Bao's disappearance and crime in the city.

"Before we know the details of [the Bao case], everyone is just wondering, could this happen to me? Anytime? Anywhere? Is this just a random act?"

"It's just about safety, security, how can we as individuals in communities, and even families, build a safer environment for our families and our future."

Police investigating the disappearance of Christchurch woman Yanfei Bao are putting the search for her on hold this week.

Bao vanished from the suburb of Hornby on 19 July.

Last week, police were focusing on a farm in Greenpark, which is close to a previous search location - Lake Ellesmere.

There was no planned search activity this week but work was continuing to prepare search sites in the Greenpark area, a police spokesperson said.

The man charged with kidnapping and murdering missing real estate agent Yanfei Bao is Chinese national Tingjun Cao who has only been in New Zealand since March.

Cao, who has entered a plea of not guilty on both charges, was remanded in custody for a case review hearing on November 10.

The 52-year-old Bryndwr man was initially charged with kidnapping Bao, and was remanded in custody following his first court appearance on Monday, July 24 – two days after he was arrested in the public area of Christchurch International Airport with no bags and a one-way ticket to China.

On August 15, a murder charge was added to the kidnapping charge.

Cao appeared by video link in the High Court in Christchurch on Friday in front of Justice Cameron Mander and Bao’s husband, Paul Gooch. Cao looked visibly thinner than he did at his first court appearance but remained expressionless throughout the hearing.

Joshua MacLeod appeared for Cao on behalf of his lead counsel Colin Eason. Cao’s not guilty pleas were maintained. A tentative trial date of October 21, 2024 was set. The trial has been scheduled for four weeks with the possibility of a fifth week.

Cao’s interim name suppression was not being sought to be continued, MacLeod confirmed. Justice Mander remanded Cao to a case review hearing on November 10.

A tracksuit, a top and a spade appear to be items of police interest.

"Police believe the items have been discarded in the Christchurch area some time from approximately midday on Wednesday 19 July, to about 5pm Saturday 22 yJuly," Detective Inspector Nicola Reeves said last month. "The spade is brand new.

Bao was last seen alive on July 19, when she arrived at a house for sale on Trevor St, Hornby, set to show a potential buyer through it.

Yes, that actually happened last week. Since then, only development has been the searches in new areas...

The search for missing real estate agent Yanfei Bao has moved to three new areas in Canterbury.

In a statement, police said the new areas included:
  • Waterholes Rd and Robinsons Rd, Rolleston
  • Spalling Road and Te Kuru Wetland, Halswell
  • Haul Road, McLeans Island
“Staff will not be searching the Greenpark area today but future activity is being considered in that area,” they said.

In an update provided on Tuesday, the police announced that they will be conducting searches in Hudson’s Road and areas in Greenpark. These locations have been identified as potential areas of interest in the search for Bao. Greenpark, located south of Christchurch, has been a key area of focus throughout the investigation, with searches taking place on a farm in the vicinity.

Strange they've gone back to search a property that has already undergone extensive searching...

A police spokesperson said a Specialist Search Group will be searching Hudson’s Rd and other areas in Greenpark, 30 minutes south of Christchurch, on Wednesday.

Previously, search teams have scoured paddocks and an irrigation pond that had been drained, at a dairy farm on Hudson’s Rd in separate visits.

Following are some quotes in this report from locals that kinda confirm there were no sightings nor cctv that would lead them to concentrate on this particular area...they've been there already so why go back ?? Something must be pinpointing this specific area

Co-owner Lynn Eggleston confirmed police had been searching their property previously, but said there wasn’t anything she could say about why they were there. “You know as much as I do.”

Eggleston said police had previously drained their irrigation pond, but said no-one on the farm had seen any strangers entering the farm around the time Bao went missing.

“It’s really scary,” one man said. “This is such a quiet place.”

One female farm worker said her boss had supplied security footage to the police but it had turned up nothing.

Farm workers and residents were shocked police that were back searching for Bao in the quiet rural idyll they call home.

Police are using metal detectors and are methodically walking the 1.6 kms towards the farm they have been honing in on.

On Wednesday, searchers returned to Hudson’s Rd, where they have already searched a dairy farm extensively including draining an irrigation pond.

Using metal detectors and steel poles, a dozen searchers methodically combed through grass verges and drainage ditches on both sides of the road. They also scanned paddocks on one side of the road, in a painstaking process, in full view of passing tractors and other traffic.
