Once you get that figured out, would you please give me back my red stapler?

Nobody uses that route to go camp. To use it you have to ford the second largest tributary to the lemhi river (Big Timber Creek). Also that road is way worse then the main path up to the campground. Last time I was there, there was also a gate on the south side of the ford. It's not impossible...

With a truck it takes maybe 25 minutes, and it is possible to get there even quicker. The internet estimates are way off.

I should also add that it seems like you are more accustomed to camping in areas that have a much larger population base. Idaho is huge, and not that many people live here. In Lemhi County we have a population of 7,936 and the county is 4,563 square miles. That comes out to 1.7 people per square...

I'm not trying to start an argument over campfires, but your opinion on them is not shared by most people that live in Idaho. Even most of the more environmentally friendly locals I know would not have a problem with bringing wood for a campfire or gathering up some at the campsite. It's legal...

That is definitely my opinion. Out of the people who do actually stop there, I would imagine quite a few stop only to use the restrooms so a fairly high percentage might have kids. The odds of even a couple kids coming through on the same day that matched DeOrrs description and had a similar...

I grew up in Salmon and returned after college. As far as what people are saying, most of the rumors involve things that are off limits to the sub according to what I've read. The couple of search and rescue volunteers I've talked to were confident that they would have found him if he was there...

I'm curious what everyone's' idea of "lots of traffic is". It is not actually a busy highway at all compared to highways between large cities. On busy days, I might pass 30-40 vehicles heading the opposite direction from Salmon to Lone Pine. Also, if it is a busy day, it's typically a Sunday...

It doesn't get as much traffic as you might think. If you're traveling north from southern Idaho to Montana, most people stay on I-15. Highway 28 is mainly only used to travel to the Lemhi Valley, and Salmon is the largest town in the county with only 3,100 people. In the summer it does get more...

Maybe, but I wouldn't really read too much into the decision to camp there. Even though the road is rough, it doesn't take long to get there, and it really is a pretty area (although personally I would have stayed closer to the reservoir instead of down below). Plenty of people here in Salmon...

It would really surprise me if a cougar got him. I've worked natural resource jobs for the past 12 years, so I've been all over Lemhi County. In that time I've personally only seen one, and it was from a distance. There's a reason they are hunted with dogs. They typically shy away from human...

It's a bad road, but for anyone who has experience driving rocky dirt roads, it's not that bad. If you're good at avoiding the rock clusters you can maintain a pretty good pace driving up there and not even abuse your truck that much. The website estimates for travel time are way off.

I live in the area and have worked up that drainage many times. You're absolutely correct about the time it takes to drive on that road. It is very rough but if you have a truck that you don't mind abusing a little (and good tires) you can make it up there in 20 minutes or possibly even quicker...
