Homerville, Georgia — A tattered American flag waves in the breeze in the aftermath of #HurricaneHelene, as Airmen from the Georgia Air National Guard’s 116th Maintenance Group carried out route clearing operations as part of the ongoing relief efforts, September 28, 2024.

Over the past few days, the DoD has mobilized personnel and resources to support ongoing disaster relief, rescue, and recovery efforts in the aftermath of Hurricane Helene. We continue to stand by the people and communities of North Carolina and all those affected.

Today, more than 6,700 National Guardsmen from 16 states continue to support #Helene response efforts across the Southeast, conducting search and rescue missions, clearing debris to reopen roads, transporting and distributing food, water and other essential supplies, and more.

More than 100 engineers from the Tennessee Army and Air National Guard continue to support recovery operations in East Tennessee counties impacted by severe flooding following Hurricane Helene. These Guardsmen are working with state, county, and local emergency personnel by removing flood and storm debris in Carter, Cocke, Greene, Unicoi, and Washington counties.

Using bulldozers, dump trucks, chain saws, skid steer loaders, and other equipment, Soldiers and Airmen are helping clear roads and other critical locations so emergency managers can improve services to the affected areas.

I know 2 crashed on the parkway, where they werent supposed to be anyway, is that where you're talking about? I could (almost) forgive them if they were from relief agencies, but I don't know where they were from. Do you?
The police are limiting traffic onto the Asheville Highway Bridge over the Nolichucky River here in Greene County. The current GPS settings for truckers is sending them over that bridge which takes you into NC where it becomes NC SR 208. It's a winding, curvy road that goes up the side of a mountain to 4500 feet elevation and back down another mountain into Asheville. It's a tough drive even in a car on a dry sunny day. When the trucks can't go over the bridge then their GPS sends them to Lower Paint Creek Road which no longer exists due to being washed away in the French Broad River. 208 was where the truck jack -knifed in the morning and Paint Creek was where the other truck became stuck. State and federal officials are trying to have the truckers GPS corrected.
