They are still clearing brush and looking into sewers on the search site:

One article I missed yesterday. This is about a different spot than the hole under the sheet metal:

http://www.itv.com/news/2014-06-05/...ering-police-something-worth-close-attention/

. . . the second spot they've identified is still keeping officers busy. Ground penetrating radar equipment picked up an image beneath the soil there yesterday. Forensic teams began work on the spot late in the afternoon and even the most senior detectives stayed on into the evening, supervising the operation.

Today, a team is still at work on the spot. Intermittently, they emerge to take buckets back to their vans. Samples, perhaps, for inspection.

And here's one reason why news is leaking out so slowly:

Frustratingly, we're receiving no updates from the teams here, no progress reports at all. The British taxpayer would be entitled to expect at least some information, perhaps, given the search is being funded from the public purse, but Scotland Yard insists its hands are tied. This is, officially, a Portuguese police operation and the law here forbids officers from talking about an ongoing inquiry.

So it may be that for another week or more we watch this meticulous search continue, fascinated by the methods the police are employing but unable to tell whether any of this is taking them even a small step closer to finding Madeleine McCann.

Portuguese police confirm to us that another search will take place on land between Praia Da Luz and nearby town of Lagos from Wednesday

(Not sure what he means "from Wednesday" - maybe after next Wed?)

What's the statistics for young children wandering outside alone and disappearing into thin air?

.. and what are the statistics for a young child wandering outside and then 'just so happening' to bump into a child abductor/group of child abductors? That's not to say it couldn't ever happen, but the likelihood is v.remote for both of those two things to have happened. In any case, Kate McCann was sure that Madeleine had been abducted almost immediately (if not, immediately) .. and that worries me, that she claims this was her first thought and not that Madeleine had just wandered off (probably to try and find her mum and dad), which would actually have been the more likely scenario in the circumstances (the patio door having been left open, the fact that Madeleine was already unhappy from the previous night of having been left alone, etc) .. yet that scenario didn't even appear to enter the McCann's head at the time.

On vacation, in a foreign country?? how often does that happen? What are the statistics for that?

I think there are a bunch of possibilities but none lead me back to the McCanns.
What if MAdeleine walked out of the room and got lost and ran into people that took her?
That close that certainly seems possible to me. No plan at all. The kid was there and in the way and they were seen and that is that.

BBM - I don't see why not? It only takes someone to maybe hit a child and end up with them being fatally injured as a result in a freak accident type way (in much the same way as the newspaper seller, Ian Tomlinson, here in the UK was killed by a policeman from having been pushed by him), or it only takes someone to give their children a bit too much of some 'medication' or other to get them off to sleep and it has an adverse (and fatal) reaction .. or some other type of negligent accident which resulted in her death, which wasn't intentional, but which could ruin their lives because it might still incur a jail sentence, loss of well paid job, loss of nice big comfy house, and complete loss of that type of lifestyle.

We are seeing lots of news about Scotland Yard's new searches.

They can be discussed here. Please link up your comments and please stay focused. Bickering and fighting will lead to TOs and a closing of the thread.

Everyone needs to be on their best behavior.

These should get you started. Many thanks to zwiebel for passing them forward! She ROCKS!

discuss the search not the parents.

Looking through news reports at the time, here is a female witness, maybe this is the lead?

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-453015/Sniffer-dogs-tracked-Maddy-supermarket.html

A key witness has told police she saw two people in a car acting suspiciously near to the supermarket where tracker dogs lost Madeleine's scent giving rise to fears she was transferred to a vehicle.

This is incorrect, the tracker dogs went nowhere near the supermarket. They lost the scent at a car park right opposite the Tapas Restaraunt. In any case they only traced Madeleines scent on the normal route she took on a daily basis to the creche.

Im really glad they are searching this well. I have to look back but were the searches in the beginning this detailed?

This is a new Portuguese reportage from station RTP1 about the latest activities. It includes comment from a BBC reporter Tim Burridge. Translation of the programme is in the second link.

The PJ, meanwhile, has discarded Euclides Monteiro as primary suspect, and believes now, that the man who may have taken Madeleine, was a foreigner that has committed an isolated crime, at a time when he was spending his holidays in Portugal.

Just what I have thought all along!

That is a statement that can be read in a lot of different ways.

Just because Kate did not think she did that, does not mean she didn't. There are plenty of 2 yr olds that have been known to break out of homes and be found outside.

Wait. Wasn't she like a week shy of 4? 4 for all intents and purposes?

http://news.sky.com/story/1277676/madeleine-mccann-police-extend-search-area

Police searching for missing Madeleine McCann will extend their hunt to new areas outside Praia da Luz next week.
Portuguese police sources confirmed to Sky News that land just off a road on the way to the nearby town of Lagos will be searched from next Wednesday.

Digging continued for a sixth day on the cordoned off scrubland close to the centre of Praia da Luz, five minutes walk from where the McCanns were staying in May, 2007.
Police sniffer dogs were once again covering different sectors of the search zone, and officers continued filling in holes they had carefully dug out earlier in the week.

. . . On Friday, some British money and a cash machine receipt were found on the site but have been discounted from the investigation along with many other items.

Of course it wouldn't be strange to find British money or a receipt there so close to the resort. It's probably been discounted because it was a more recent date (otherwise the receipt would have been destroyed by the weather).

Iam glad to see there doing a real search they look like there hard at work finally taking some action instead of just alot of speculation about a perp..In that article it says a plane flew over some key areas to get ariel photo graphs that and using google ariel map will show spots that were untouched before they visited portugal and now the plane photos will show spots of different colour dirt and it tells of recent digging I remember a 48 hours episode of the bodies found from the mesa desert and they did that very same thing and it was amazing you could literally see each personal spot where there had been a body burried ..Hoping some awnsers come soon..

This spot attracted intense police interest yesterday and is doing so again today - only yards from the pit. #mccann pic.twitter.com/2XpekqrDT4

You can see the sheet metal that covered the other pit in the foreground of the picture.
