I never dreamed I would find myself in this situation. Like most of you I have worked my whole life. Never been rich but was having no problem with the bills on the boards. Legal bills that go along with it, travel expenses, printing expenses, all of it no problem.

Then, reality hits. It's like a hurricane. You know it's coming. You just don't know the damage until after it is over.

Many of you have been there and are so kind to offer your words of support. It means the world.

I love the t-shirt (and other items) idea, I know I would order some.
Here are a couple of other ideas:
-Offer a no ads version of Websluths for a fee.
-Make certain parts of the board accessible to paid members while the basic portions remain free.
-Create other levels of membership privileges.
If these things are added without taking away what's already available for free, then I wouldn't think you'd get many complaints from members.
 
Absolutely understandable and nothing to feel badly about. I am sorry to hear about the personal situations in your life making things more difficult. We want to help. I respect what you are saying about if someone made a big contribution then got out of hand. I don't know that I would have thought of that and appreciate your wisdom and thoughtfulness. Think through possibilities though and let us know! What about even things like adding the Amazon (or whatever) link that people can click through when shopping to generate some revenue for the site? What about anonymous contributions (if that is even possible?). Take care and know how appreciated you are!
 
Thank you so much for all you do and have done for this site, I would help by buying all kinds of things! ANYTHING to keep websleuthss up and running. I love this site and probably couldnt live without it!

It's very sensitive of you to warn us before you begin advertisements, but I don't think you should feel bad about it. You have created such an amazing forum for so many armchair detectives. I LOVE this site. Even though I don't actively participate very often, I love being able to come here to get the most up-to-date info. And since it's relevant, I also have to say that I'm so impressed with the intellegence and skill of everyone who posts here. I've been on other forums, but none of them seem to attract the calliber of websleuths.

I appreciate your resistance to having advertisements, and I really respect that you're not doing it to make money beyond the cost of maintaining this site, but frankly, I don't see anything wrong with you going into profit for what you provide.

with the WS logo or a car magnet??? Would that appeal to anyone and what pricepoint would be a good one?

I have seen bracelets for 1.00 and magnets for 2-3.00 for other sites....

I was wondering if maybe sites that provide background checks, or sites like veromi.com, classmates, peoplefinder, geneaology.com, or other subscription sites would be interested in advertising here, since it's a high probability that a sleuther would subscribe. It seems like a good place to start. Maybe you could mention how many members you have, and that many already currently have subscriptions to such sites in order to collect facts?


Also, I think the car magnets, shirts, etc are a good place to start, because it's also good advertising for the site.

I also think an anonymous donation link is a good idea.
 
Tricia, is there anyway you could set up a paypal account, and we could donate "anonynmously"? Or would that create tax problems for you?

Whatever you decide to do, I will click on and buy from any reasonable sponsor! And, I think most of us would.

We could even go in together, donate to a fund, have a friendly bank send you a cashier's check or something, so you would have no way of knowing who donated, and you could ban at will!

OMG, , hysterical as usual.

Tricia why should any of us care fi there is advertising on the boards? I say go for it and if it gets to the point that this site is so popular that the advertising is paying all your bills, then good for you. Youv'e built this up into the best boards on the net. I say Bravo and let the advertising begin. :)

Tricia, anything you do will be alright with me. Advertising..is o.k. with me.

I belong to a Football Message board and they charge $15.00 a year and they have no problems with people joining, actually if a member can't afford it you can sponsor a member. The administrator will give it to those person anonymously so no one has to know. Just a thought. They set it up thru PayPal.

Let us know whatever we can do. I do Stain Glass I can donate something.

I had that same idea. Everyone could come up with a dollar. My thought though was a dollar a month.

The advertising seems to be the way Tricia wants to go. That's fine with me also.:blowkiss:
