The Law & Crime article links the defendant's "Sentencing Memorandum" by his defense -- asking the court to impose a sentence of 90 months, and that he be placed on supervised release for a period of five years. Sentencing is scheduled for June 2-3, 2021 before Judge Timothy Burgess.

ETA: I read the Memorandum report -- sounds like the event leading to the victim's death was classic roid rage by the defendant.

Six months prior to the cruise/murder, the defendant was diagnosed with ADD and began taking Rx Adderall. He was also injecting testosterone and taking Phentermine -- which were all prescribed to him and filled at his pharmacy.

More important - his defense states that by all accounts, there had never been any violence against his wife or his three children. No history of DV.

Family and friends characterize the relationship of the couple as loving, caring, and respectful. In his 43 years, the defendant never investigated, charged, or convicted of any criminal behavior or conduct as a juvenile or adult.....

GUILTY - AK - Kristy Manzanares, 39, killed aboard Emerald Princess, Juneau, 25 July 2017 *husband arrested*

5/6/21 Update: The filing by federal public defender Jamie McGrady states that this, combined with what was at the time an undiagnosed bipolar disorder & “a problematic combination of prescribed medication & alcohol resulted in an aberrant episode of violence” by Manzanares. Manzanares played football, wrestled & boxed when he was younger & had a history of “testosterone supplementation,” the filing states. Had brain abnormalities a defense expert deemed consistent with injuries caused by playing contact sports, according to a court filing in the case. Manzanares’ attorneys, in the filing, say they plan to seek a 7 1/2 year prison sentence. Prosecutors, in a separate filing, say they will recommend a life sentence, saying Manzanares had committed “the most serious crime a person can commit against another.” Both filings cite a presentence report that calculated a sentencing guideline range between 14 years & 17 1/2 years.
5/7/21 Update: The defendant's "Sentencing Memorandum" by his defense -- asking the court to impose a sentence of 90 months & that he be placed on supervised release for a period of five years. Sentencing is scheduled for June 2-3, 2021 before Judge Timothy Burgess.
6/2/21 Update: Sentencing continues on 6/3/21. Court documents are sealed. No info available.

"Manzanares has worked with therapists, McGrady said, while avoiding such medications as allegedly caused him to commit murder in the first place."
Six months prior to the cruise/murder, the defendant was diagnosed with ADD and began taking Rx Adderall. He was also injecting testosterone and taking Phentermine -- which were all prescribed to him and filled at his pharmacy.

June 3, 2021

The brutality of the killing, Burgess said in court, had given him reason for pause in considering the strength of the sentencing.

Federal public defender Jamie McGrady spoke in court for leniency in the sentencing, citing Manzanares’ poor mental health at the time of the incident, poor reaction to medicine given to treat that and a prior brain injury.

McGrady also pointed to Manzanares’ “model” behavior while incarcerated in Lemon Creek Correctional Center for the past four years, indicating a record untarnished by willfulness or lack of cooperation with Department of Corrections personnel.

[..]

Manzanares’ guilty plea came with a deal reducing the charge from first-degree murder to second-degree murder, which carries less stringent sentencing requirements. The punishment for second-degree murder is imprisonment for any term of years up to life.

He is due to be sentenced by U.S. District Judge Timothy Burgess, chief judge of the District of Alaska, on Thursday morning.

Utah man faces sentencing in beating death of wife on cruise

June 3, 2021

JUNEAU, Alaska (AP) — The father of a Utah woman beaten to death by her husband on an Alaska cruise in 2017 told a judge Wednesday he would consider it justice if the man went to prison for the rest of his life.

Jeff Hunt briefly composed himself before speaking at a sentencing hearing for Kenneth Manzanares. Manzanares was married to Hunt’s daughter, Kristy, and last year pleaded guilty to second-degree murder in her death.

Hunt told U.S. District Court Judge Timothy Burgess he hopes Manzanares “gets what he deserves.”

Burgess heard emotional testimony from family members, including two of the Manzanares’ daughters, and legal arguments before taking the matter under advisement. He planned to announce a decision Thursday.

Not surprised to read her brother walked out of the courtroom before Ken spoke. I can't imagine the guilt the victim's dad and brother feel to this day that they were unable to protect Kristy (they were also on the family cruise). :(

Prosecutor made a good point that the accused's fatal rage-- explained as "medical" -- followed Kristy's announcement that she wanted a divorce.

What a creep. He killed his wife because she laughed at him and now is claiming mental illness, BECAUSE SHE LAUGHED AT HIM.? That will cause you to shift instantly into mental illness, wont it? Rage and resentment is not a mental illness.

Yup -- Kristy laughed at him and wanted a divorce. Despite the recent supplemental briefings (sealed order), I don't think the Judge will be lenient.

Man sentenced to 30 years for cruise ship murder | Juneau Empire

A Utah man was sentenced in federal court today to three decades in prison with five more years of supervised released for the beating death of his wife aboard a cruise ship in Alaska in 2017.

Kenneth Manzanares, 43, was sentenced Thursday morning in United States District Court after pleading guilty last year to second-degree murder.

“The crime was savage, bloody, and brutal. It was also personal; a man killing his wife” said district judge Timothy Burgess as he handed down the sentence. “Kristy Manzanares’ life was viciously ended by her husband.”

  • “The offense is one of the most serious as it involved the taking of a life,” Burgess said. “He did not stop even though his children attempted to open the door and pleaded with him to stop.”

The FBI released a statement about the sentencing.

“No excuse can justify the savagery committed by this man, who will now spend the next three decades behind bars,” said Robert Britt, special agent in charge of the FBI Anchorage Field Office, in the statement. “The FBI worked tirelessly, with the support of our partners, to seek justice for Kristy – a beloved mother, daughter, sister, and friend. While justice has now been served, the lasting impact and trauma this man inflicted on Kristy’s family can never be erased. Our thoughts are with Kristy’s family and her home community.”

This all resulted in an upward departure, Burgess said, or a sentencing more severe than guidelines otherwise recommend. The defense applied to have Manzanares incarcerated in Tucson, Arizona, or another Lower 48 location, Burgess said.

This case was a good example of how different federal sentencing guidelines are compared to individual state criminal codes. The Judge truly has discretion. The plea to 2nd degree was indeed a gift -- he could have been sentenced to LIFE under his initial 1st degree murder charge.

Domestic abuser is jailed for 30 years after battering wife to death in front of kids on cruise | Daily Mail Online

June 3, 2021

Manzanares viciously beat Kristy to death onboard the Emerald Princess cruise ship in July 2017 where the couple were holidaying with their three daughters and extended family.

Afterwards, he tried to blame Kristy for laughing, with passengers so stunned by the on-board bloodbath that many mistook it for a dramatized murder mystery that had been laid on as entertainment.

The spouses had gotten into an explosive argument in their room and Kristy told her husband she wanted a divorce.
