Well ... isn't this a mess! It's difficult to imagine that VW would risk a comfortable retirement complete with pension for the sake of involvement with a murdering, career criminal ... though stranger things have happened. LE must be going through CCTV footage and interviewing everyone with a connection to both parties and will surely have more info soon though they might not share it with the public. Anyone coming into contact with CW is in a dangerous situation so we might hear an update if LE can determine a path they are on. After all, they will need food, water, gas - and bathrooms! Moo

FLORENCE, Ala. — A prison official from Alabama is missing after escorting an inmate to a courthouse for a hearing.

The Lauderdale County Sheriff's Office said in a Facebook post Saturday that Assistant Director of Corrections Vicky White disappeared while escorting an inmate being held on capital murder charges. The inmate is also missing.

On Saturday morning, Sheriff Rick Singleton confirmed the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency, FBI, and U.S. Marshals are assisting in the investigation.

White, 56, who's been with the department for 16 years, left the detention center with inmate Casey White on Friday morning and neither has been seen since. The pair are not related. The vehicle they were traveling in when they left the detention center was discovered at a nearby shopping center parking lot, according to the sheriff's office.

White, 38, was being held on capital murder charges in the 2015 death of Connie Ridgeway. He confessed to the slaying in 2020 while in state prison for other crimes, WHNT-TV reported.

Being alone with the inmate was a violating of policy
At a news conference Friday, Singleton said Vicky White, armed with a 9mm, left the detention center with the inmate around 9:41 a.m. headed to the courthouse for what she said was a mental health evaluation for Casey. She was alone with the inmate, which the sheriff said was in direct violation of department policy.

"Our policy is for any inmate with those kinds of charges to have two sworn deputies escort them. And that did not happen," Singleton said.

From my understanding, the police vehicle she took to transport Casey White in was found in the shopping mall parking lot, so what vehicle are they traveling in? Her personal vehicle? A stolen vehicle? A friend's vehicle?

You are correct, and it’s a very good question.

If her personal vehicle is missing—that answers that question. (She could have left it there, and taken an Uber to work?)

What was the extent of his criminal background? Would he have friends or family who’d be willing to help get him out?

My biggest concern is that there might have been someone in the parking lot who lives alone and hasn’t been reported missing yet.

My husband would be the first to tell you, I am the least romantic person ever. Would a woman, set to retire from a long term career, likely with a solid pension, health insurance and still healthy and young, throw it away on a career criminal? Is love really that blind?

If this is a romantic thing, what was the long term plan? This is obviously not a lifestyle that is sustainable endlessly.

I hope they are checking her financials thoroughly; could be an easy answer there.

9:20 a.m. - Asst. Director Vicky White instructs corrections deputy to prepare inmate Casey White for transport to courthouse. Deputy removes White from his cell, takes him to booking where he handcuffs and shackles his legs.

I wonder if CW still has on the handcuffs and shackles. If the corrections deputy (not VW) handcuffed and shackled CW, as the timeline states, would she even have the ability to remove them?

Later in the timeline it states that "no evidence was located [in the vehicle found in the parking lot] to assist us in the investigation" which makes me believe CW is still handcuffed/shackled (unless VW has a master key).

I know… it just seems so naive on her part, to say the least. I just hope no one is hurt and she is found unharmed and charged if she is culpable.

Interesting shift in language by CNN. VW is no long labeled as "missing" and is now being referred to as "the corrections officer who removed him from jail".

Alabama authorities searching for an inmate and the corrections officer who removed him from jail

“Video security footage from the area where Vicki White's car was found has not shown the two getting into another vehicle.”

A very well-planned escape, avoiding all cameras? Would other security cameras focus on the exits in a way that would at least narrow down the possible cars?

BBM

Extensive, including previous kidnapping charges, and previous escape attempts. A violent and scary guy.

Lauderdale County CO and the capital murder suspect are missing

I share the concern about someone in that parking lot at the wrong moment, if they didn't have a car stashed there. I can't imagine he would want to be seen in public. Hard to hide a six foot six (or nine) guy and she looks petite. They're going to be very noticeable.

I'm trying not to think about that. CW has no problem putting a gun in someone's face to steal their vehicle. And he's already shot a woman who refused to give hers up.

I'm hoping either there was an escape vehicle placed there in advance or an accomplice picked them up. I really hope they haven't kidnapped someone else and we just don't know it yet. jmo

Had the getaway car parked in a spot they knew was out of the camera lines? Left in the trunk of another vehicle or a van?
