strange new development in this case -- apparently the house in which the murders took place burned down this weekend. police are still trying to determine whether it was the result of arson or not.

from http://www.al.com/news/birmingham/index.ssf/2016/09/house_where_5_killed_in_citron.html :

"Lori L. Myles, public affairs director for the Mobile County Sheriff's Office, said that sheriff's detectives who led the homicide investigation had already completed their evidence collection at the house so the fire didn't destroy anything valuable to the investigation."

and also from another article:
http://wjtv.com/2016/09/06/house-where-5-slain-with-ax-gunshots-mysteriously-burns/

"
A cousin of the former homeowners say they never got the chance to get pictures or keepsakes of the murder victims out of the home. They say they planned to keep them for the victims’ young children to remember their parents."

very sad for the family :(

I would suspect arson but like anyone else I don't know. Thank goodness LE was done there.

Derrick Dearman case: 'This is basically six crime scenes,' says Mobile DA Ashley Rich
Derrick Dearman, the man accused of killing five people in a Citronelle home in August, will be held without bond as the case goes to a grand jury.

Dearman faces six counts of capital murder in the Aug. 20 slayings on Jim Platt Road. A preliminary hearing in the case was held today at Circuit Court in the courtroom of Judge Rick Stout.

Five of the capital murder charges represent the five adults killed by firearm and/or axe at the secluded house during what police said was an attempted burglary or abduction. One represents the death of the unborn baby carried by one of the adult female victims.

Justin Kaleb Reed, his wife Chelsea Marie, who was expecting her first child in January, Joseph Adam Turner, wife Shannon Randall, and Robert Lee Brown were killed in the mass slaying.

Dearman, 27, of Leakesville, Mississippi, has pleaded not guilty to murder and the kidnapping of his ex-girlfriend from the home.

Mobile District Attorney Ashley Rich presented the state's early finding's in the case with the help of Clark Bolton, a Mobile County Sheriff's Office detective. Dearman's attorney, Jim Vollmer sought to find out if Dearman's girlfriend, Laneta Lester had any involvement in the murders.

Derrick Dearman indicted on eight counts of murder, kidnapping for 2016 Citronelle slaying

Court records filed Wednesday show Derrick Dearman was indicted in March on six counts of capital murder and two counts of first-degree kidnapping.

Dearman's estranged girlfriend, Laneta Lester, had fled to her relative's home on Jim Platt Road in Citronelle after she said Dearman was abusive. In the early morning hours of Aug. 21, 2016, police said Dearman came to the home and Lester called police to report him for trespassing.

Derrick Dearman To Undergo Mental Evaluation

A Mobile County Circuit Judge has ordered that Derrick Dearman be given a mental evaluation to determine if he is competent to stand trial.

According to the order, Dearman’s attorneys have filed the proper paperwork to enter a special plea asserting not guilty by mental disease or defect.

Accused killer in Citronelle mass murders seeks to undergo mental evaluation

The order cites Alabama Rules of Criminal Procedure, Rule 15, stating that his attorneys are seeking to pursue a special plea of not guilty by reason of medical disease or mental disease.

Dearman's estranged girlfriend, Laneta Lester, had fled to her relative's home on Jim Platt Road in Citronelle. Lester told authorities that Dearman had been abusive.

Derrick Dearman to face death penalty hearing in October

Derrick Dearman, who killed five people and an unborn baby with an ax and gun in Aug. 2016, will be formally sentenced during a death penalty hearing Oct. 12.

The hearing comes a little less than a month after Dearman fired his legal team and admitted his guilt to the murders, which was reported by investigators as the worst mass killing in Mobile County history.

During a jury trial, which is required in capital murder cases even when an admission of guilt is forthcoming, the jury found Dearman guilty and recommended he face the death penalty.

Dearman argued that 4 of the five convictions violate the double-jeopardy principles, which prevent a defendant from being tried and convicted on multiple counts of capital murder when they involve the same victims.
---
Dearman still has six capital murder convictions and sentences of death.
