This is a shocking story. At least they have the perp now and he can (hopefully) cause no more harm.
These posts have been such an interesting read about the role of LE. As many have said, this event may not have been preventable and LE do have a lot of pressures, but it would be interesting to see what the other call outs were that night.

I don't think the police can be blamed, like someone said upthread there aren't enough police in the world to stand guard outside houses on request. I mean, obviously in an ideal world.... But the family were apparently all in bed which suggests to me they weren't sitting around terrified and unable to sleep. I'd be interested to know how DD got in to the house though. Surely they'd have heard if he smashed windows or kicked doors in?

He says he did it because he was on drugs, meth specifically, and the drugs made him think things were happening that weren't really happening. He says he let his girlfriend and the baby live because he came down and realized what was going on. He says that he loves her, and says he's sorry to the families.

Oh, well, as long as he's sorry.

It's hard to believe anything the DailyMail publishes, their just a rag anyway. JMO

They are rarely unreliable on crime stories because they just reprint what is said from other news sources. With those stories the DM always provide links and sources at the bottom.The ex-wife did speak out to a local reporter and the article was legit.

Re the picture of the house in that article... firstly, it doesn't look big enough to have 7 or 8 people in it, has anyone seen aerial pics, does it stretch quite far back? It looks small enough that the inhabitants would have heard noise.

Also, the door has been boarded up. Did he smash his way in with the axe?

I don't think it's been established who was related to whom, initially reports said Laneta had gone to her sisters, but other sources suggest her brother was Turner. I can't work it out either, but several of them look very similar to each other in that DMail link, so who knows!

I just can't figure out if another baby was found alive? And LL uses the term "children", if so where's the other baby?

I feel sorry for all the families involved and the LE, I would be sick, even though I feel they did what they could.

Did any one notice the photos in the UK article looked like mugshots? Were all of these people involved in drugs? There is no justification for what Dearman did, but I'm just wondering about the drug issue.

The other child is around 3-4 years old. I have not heard if he was in the house that night but he must be safe somewhere.

Suspect in Alabama house murders used ax, gun in middle of night, police say

A man accused of slaying five people at an Alabama home brought an ax to attack his victims, striking one who had been sleeping in a reclining chair, and also used guns he took from the house to shoot them, an Alabama sheriff said Tuesday.

Derrick Dearman entered the house in Citronelle before dawn Saturday, Mobile County Sheriff Sam Cochran told The Associated Press.

"They were down for the night sleeping, and he had enough familiarity with the house when he entered — I guess you could say in a rage — and he's disabling people as he's in there," Cochran said. "He was able to overpower them before they were able to protect themselves."

An ax and a gun were used in the killings of each of the five adult victims, police allege in criminal complaints filed Tuesday in Mobile County District Court.

Dearman's first court appearance is scheduled for Wednesday morning. Alabama court records don't indicate whether he has an attorney who could speak on his behalf.

As he was led away to jail on Tuesday, Dearman said he barely remembers what happened but said that he deserves a harsh punishment.

"I deserve to die," he said.
